Tear Jerker / Welcome To Eden 2022

Go To

  • Gabi being forced to spend her 16th birthday home alone, with no idea of what might happened to her sister Zoa, who happens to be stuck on an island. As it happens, Zoa is telling Astrid the story about her family, including her heroin drug addict mother and absent father.
  • Zoa crying in anguish after finding Judith's dead body.
  • Judith's death. She's about to be killed by Brenda and Orson as a consequence of witnessing Ulises torturing Fran, as they want no witnesses. Her cries and desperate pleas to be spared and that she won't say anything to anyone are heartbreaking to watch.
  • As cathartic as it may seem, Brenda's death is still gut-wrenching to see after everything she's done for Astrid. Even fans who loved the acting of Claudia Trujillo were heartbroken. Trujillo's reaction after it was announced on set that her time on the show is up doesn't help either.
  • Eloy being brutally tortured when he is Taking the Heat for Ulises' death. And when he's to be executed, Orson looks away and in tears tells Alma to just kill him already. But she can't bring herself to, probably due to Ibón having told her he's the culprit, and instead she spares him.
  • Alma losing her Level 2 star (by burning) over her disobedience in not going through with Eloy's execution.
  • Africa, locked up with Charly while their fates are decided by Astrid, singing "Amor Eterno". While this is meant to be a sweet moment, the scene clearly highlights the misfortunes of some of the characters in a Sad-Times Montage such as Zoa (who is upset that Gabi won't believe her warnings about Eden), Eloy (who is still stranded in the island after having escaped his execution), Ibon (who is guilt-ridden that his role in Ulises' murder indirectly caused Eloy to be framed in his place) and Alma (heartbroken over her demotion from Level 2, and her and Ibon's relationship decreasing into Dead Sparks).
  • When Isaac brings Eloy back to Eden, he is immediately recaptured and the guards are ordered to lock him up in the cage. Isaac pleading Astrid and Erick to let him go because he's his friend (and obviously so) is just too heartbreaking to watch. This leaves Astrid and Erick no choice but to pardon him just so their son won't be sad anymore, not that it stops the guards from still being rude to him.
  • Shortly after that, Danae assaults Nuria in retaliation, not only for allowing Isaac to roam into the island unsupervised, but also for having inadvertently revealed his existence to the Eden community.
  • Ibón's death. That sure made viewers shed a lot of tears, especially when he is killed by Alma, yes, the very same person who appeared to care about him, with no one else he could turn to.
  • Alma's Freudian Excuse of why she joined Eden is also very sad after you rewatch season 1. She lived with abusive parents, just like Ibón, and their abuse connection led to their romance. It wanted us to show that Alma did have some good in her, especially when she asked Ibón if he had home issues, until Astrid's twisted teachings changed her behavior to the worst. Seeing her become a remorseless murderous monster just like Brenda is pretty depressing to see. Even worse, she ends up killing Ibón, just for killing another murderous remorseless monster even more dangerous who deserved to die. So, Alma will likely spend the rest of her life as a resentful person who is now beyond redemption and doesn't deserve a second chance.
  • Astrid crossing the Moral Event Horizon by lying to Isaac that Nuria, his birth mother, never loved him and wanted him dead. Isaac replies that he doesn't want anything to do with her. Nuria's reaction is heartbreaking.
  • Erick leaving Africa for his family after learning that his son Isaac was almost killed, to the point that Erick refers to her as a "nobody" (even if he says he didn't mean it like that) and calling their romance an affair. She can't believe that what she's hearing came from the mouth of the only person at Eden who was there for her when she needed them the most. And worse, Africa screams at Erick not to bother coming back begging to forgive him by the time he outlives his usefulness with Astrid, and later learns she's pregnant. At least Mayka and Charly are still friendly with Africa, but this scene was clearly a sad reminder that Africa will never get the love she wants.
  • Bel confronting Eva for once again betraying the rebellion just for the sake of earning Astrid's respect.
  • Zoa finding out that Gabi sold her and Bel out to Astrid by revealing their attempted murder plot on the psychopath leader. At first, Zoa scoffs at this. However, when Gabi stays silent, Zoa checks out her wrist to see that she's earned a star for her obedience and loyalty, which Gabi quickly covers. Then, Astrid nods her head to Zoa as if she was saying "I'm not kidding, she can tell you herself", then doing the same to Gabi as if she was saying "Go ahead, tell her". You can see the look on Zoa's face, her eyes widened in shock, and she clearly doesn't want this to be true. Her voice breaks the moment she asks Gabi if it was her. Gabi sadly confirms that she had to, but lies to Zoa that Astrid threatened to kill her if she didn't tell. The audience and Astrid knows this isn't the case, as we have a flashback of Astrid's confrontation with Gabi for lying about her name. When Astrid got the heads up from Nuria so that Zoa and Bel would carry out their plan to kill her inside Nuria's module, Gabi, still clouded by the love she has for Astrid as the idealized parental figure she could ever ask for, warns her not to go there as Zoa had already told her about the scheme beforehand. That's when she's forced to drop that big bomb on her sister and rat her out as the culprit. As Gabi is about to be taken out of the tent, she stops for a moment and tries to get Zoa to forgive her by bringing up their "Never say goodbye in anger" rule, but Zoa simply won't hear any of it. Joel then takes Gabi away and the scene ends with Zoa breaking down in tears. She never thought that Gabi, the only remaining relative she genuinely cared about from her already dysfunctional family, would stoop so low by betraying her the way she did.
Astrid: Gabi was worried about you. She didn't want you to do anything stupid you might later regret. That's why she told us about your plan.
(Zoa scoffs at this, but then looks at Astrid, who nods her head in truthfulness. Zoa then skeptically turns to Gabi.)
Zoa: What is she talking about, Gabi?
(Zoa checks out Gabi's wrist and is horrified to see that it has an Eden star signifying her loyalty.)
    Zoa: What is this?
(Gabi quickly covers her wrist and Zoa's eyes widen in shock, then we cut to a brief flasback of Astrid's confrontation with Gabi as she pulls out a gun before the scene snaps back to the present. Zoa is on the verge of tears.)
    Zoa: Was it you?
(Again, the scene cuts back to the same flashback of Astrid confronting Gabi, who is paralyzed by fear, then back to the present with Astrid silently encouraging Gabi to confess to Zoa, then again to the flashback scene when Astrid gives Gabi an angry stare for her deception, before the scene returns to Gabi apologizing to Zoa.)
Gabi: I'm sorry, Zoa. I'm sorry, but I had to. (Zoa, still shocked, shakes her head in disbelief) Astrid had found out that we were sisters and she threatened to kill me.
Astrid: Don't lie, Gabi. It wasn't exactly like that. (The scene again cuts back to Astrid confronting Gabi)
Astrid: You and your sister have taken me for a fool, right...Gabi?
Gabi: Astrid...I...never meant to lie to you, I'm sorry.
Astrid: You have been pretending the entire time.
Gabi: No. I've signed because I like this place. I want to stay here, with you (Astrid shakes her head, refusing to believe Gabi's words.). That's very true.
Astrid: I'm really hurt. I wasn't expecting this from you. How am I supposed to believe you now? (Astrid receives Nuria's message about the "broken" antenna and steps out of her desk.)
Astrid: I'll be back in a moment. We'll think how to deal with you later.
    Gabi: Where are you going?
Astrid: I'm going to make a management at the volcano. (Gabi recalls Zoa telling her about the plan to kill Astrid.)
Gabi: Can't someone else go instead?
Astrid: Why are you saying that? (Gabi hesitates while Astrid suspiciously turns to her.) Gabi? Do you know anything else? (Gabi shakes her head)
Gabi: I don't want you to get hurt.
Astrid: What will happen to me if I go there? (Gabi still hesitates) Who wrote that message? (Gabi again shakes her head) Who's behind that message?
    (Beat)
Gabi: Zoa. (The scene briefly returns to the present as Zoa is stunned by what she heard about Gabi, then again to the flashback right after Gabi named Zoa as the culprit, and she starts crying. Astrid is stunned as well and takes out her walkie-talkie to contact Joel)
    Astrid: Joel.
(The scene cuts back to the present. Astrid leaves while Joel is taking Gabi out, but she pushes Joel to let her go and talk to Zoa.)
Gabi: I'm sorry, Zoa, please just look at me. (to Joel) Just a moment, please! Zoa, do you remember our rule? "Never say goodbye in anger". You remember? (Zoa stares at Gabi in betrayal, unwilling to forgive her this time) Zoa, please.
(Joel takes Gabi out of the tent and Zoa privately breaks down in tears)
  • Despite her selfishness, Gabi feels completely guilty for betraying Zoa. She really wishes she could take it all back and shows that it hurts her more than it hurt Zoa, especially when she learns that Astrid is going to have her and Bel executed, knowing fully well it was all her fault.
  • Eloy and Charly unsuccesfully (and separately) trying to convince their respective partners, Orson and Mayka (who have higher access to Eden), to do something to stop Zoa and Bel's execution, only for them to refuse them as they're both afraid of what Astrid might do to them if they don't follow her orders. But it's clear that deep down they do not want Eloy and Charly to be killed as well. Eloy was framed for murdering Ulises and almost executed, while the same was going to happen to Charly over his failed attempt to escape the island. So, Eloy and Charly were both going to be killed for their previous actions, meaning that Orson and Mayka couldn't bear the thought of losing them once again.
    • Eloy still tries to do the sign language, which Orson still doesn't understand, forcing him to write it to him on a piece of paper. All Orson can do is comfort Eloy by holding him.
    • As for Charly, he was willing to rescue Zoa and Bel, even if it meant the end of his own life, saying that Ibon was already killed and he doesn't care about anything. And worse, he screams at Mayka that he doesn't want people he cares about to keep dying. This hits home to Charly, as he is still haunted by his little sister's death.
  • The execution scene of Zoa and Bel. They have both fought so hard in their plan to kill Astrid, only to have their efforts frustrated by Gabi and (to a lesser extent) Astrid. Just as Bel is to be executed first, Gabi shows up and begs Astrid to spare them both (even calling Astrid "her mother"), despite Zoa instructing her to leave and not wanting to bend to the monstrous woman seen as an angel by Gabi. However, Astrid is only willing to forgive Zoa and still allow Bel to be executed in her place, but Zoa refuses by firmly stating that if Bel dies, she dies as well. It doesn't really help that Gabi keeps begging to let them go as she is forcefully held back by one of Joel's soldiers and Forced to Watch as they are about to be killed. Fortunately for them, the whole ordeal is interrupted (once again) by Brisa, the investigator hired by Ibon's father, arriving with her companions via a chopper, but this definitely was one of the most saddest scenes of the entire show and had fans with mixed emotions.
  • Some of the characters going to Eden are children of their parents, even if they fell victim to Abusive Parents or Parental Neglect, or simply Adults Are Useless. Zoa and Gabi had an addicted yet caring mother, who, despite her flaws, was still worriedsick when neither returned home and was shown to be still in touch with Brisa about it. Ibon had an abusive father, who wanted to know where his son was by hiring Brisa, but eventually gave up believing he was better off without him. Charly had a sister who is dead, survived by two brothers (one of them who has a kid, making Charly an uncle, and is also in touch with Brisa) and a mother. And, according to Gabi, Judith, Zoa's best friend, had parents who were also as worried. Judith and Ibon are killed, so none of their parents ever got to know what happened to their children and Never Got to Say Goodbye, while the others whose children survived are either still looking for them, simply gave up or didn't want to have anything to do with them. Heck, her mainland goons even had David, the only witness who knew what was going on with Zoa, killed and probably his kidnapped mother as well. In short, Astrid's malicious actions have destroyed families.
