Tear Jerker / The Amazing Spider-Man (2018)

Go To

  • In issue #10, Black Cat reveals that she knows her memory of Spider-Man's true identity was wiped from her mind. She confesses to be truly hurt by this, as she felt that she and Peter shared a special bond. It's one of the few times we have truly seen Felicia open and vulnerable since the Brand New Day era. This does lead to a Tear Dryer when Peter reveals his identity to her.

  • Issue #13 reveals that the person behind the Jameson Museum and the one who abducted Spider-Man and Jonah is Frederick Foswell Jr., the son of Frederick Foswell Sr. aka the Big Man. Inspired by Jonah's original vendetta against Spider-Man, Frederick has convinced himself that his father was framed as the Big Man, that Spider-Man is responsible and that Jameson has either been blackmailed or brainwashed into renouncing his hatred of the Web-Slinger. Jonah is truly sobered to see how his Irrational Hatred of Spider-Man has driven the son of one of his closest friends to villainy.
Jonah: Your father was a good man, Freddie. He was one of the best journalists I ever had, and he was my friend. But he was also a criminal.
    • Despite Jonah trying to convince of his father's guilt and Spider-Man innocence, Frederick Jr. refuses to accept the truth and tries to shoot both Jameson and Spider-Man. When that fails, he tries to kill himself, Jonah and Spider-Man with a self-destruct sequence.
  • Issue #16: Angry at being made to hide in the sewers due to his reptilean appearance, Billy Connors sneaks out to go to a party and meet a friend that he has been chatting with online. The sight of Billy's appearance causes a panic and he ends up being chased by the police before being captured by Taskmaster and Black Ant to be used as bait for Spider-Man.
    • Billy's entire situation is quite heartbreaking as he is denied a normal life because of his father's mistakes. Him sneaking out was the desperate act of a sad kid who just wanted to feel normal, even for just one night.
  • Issue #57: A newly "cleansed" Norman begs Peter to help him get through to Harry, but Peter declares that he is sick of the endless cycle of him trying to help the Osborns and being met with more agony, terror and loss in return. He tells Norman that he will have nothing to do with him and Harry any longer, and when Norman tries to stop him in a desperate attempt to make him listen, Peter snaps and beats him viciously.
    • Norman's entire situation after being cleansed of his sins by the Sin-Eater. Even though he is genuinely remorseful of all the pain and hurt he has caused, especially towards Peter and MJ, neither of them believe he has turned over a new leaf. Norman doesn't even blame them and has to live with the fact that he ruined the lives of so many people, including his own son.
  • Issue #58: Peter tells Liz about Harry's relapse into villainy and she angrily denies it, insisting that she would have noticed if anything was off about Harry. Then Normie reveals his father's secret compartment containing his Green Goblin costume and weapons, causing Liz to break down in tears.
  • Issue #59: Norman takes Liz to Ravencroft to see Harry, hoping that she can get through to him. We don't see any dialogue but seeing Liz react in horror and tears at what her husband has become is truly heartbreaking.
  • Issue #60: MJ takes Peter to an empty theatre so he can act out what he wants to say to Harry. Peter pours his heart out, venting over how much he despises the pain and misery his actions cause to his friends and family, and that on some level he thinks Harry is right that he only hurts those he cares about.
You said you wanted to show me Hell, Harry. Well, maybe I'm living in it right now.
  • Giant-Size Spider-Man:
    • Peter suffers yet another gut punch when Boomerang reveals in a goodbye letter to Spider-Man that he was using him to retrieve the final piece of the Lifeline Tablet and give it to the Kingpin in exchange for immunity and his old gang back. Poor Peter is left feeling foolish and humiliated after yet another betrayal.
    • While Boomerang's reformation was a lie, his friendship with Peter and respect for Spider-Man were very much real, even if they weren't enough to stop Boomerang from betraying Spider-Man. Even while celebrating with his reunited gang, Boomerang is clearly saddened by what he has done.
    • Despite initially wanting to use the tablet to resurrect his wife Vanessa, Kingpin ultimately accepts that she would prefer to rest in peace. However, he does use the tablet to resurrect his son Richard who was killed by Vanessa.
