Tear Jerker / Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang

Go To

  • Nanny's catchphrase of "When you don't want me, but need me, I will stay. If you want me but don't need me, I will have to go." In the first movie she even lampshades this as she finishes, noting how tragic it was. True to her word, her departure is a sad one.
    • As Nanny McPhee is leaving, even the mother notes how they all still very much need her. As she turns the corner, the mother sees Nanny McPhee on the horizon and realizes they really didn't need her anymore; her husband has returned home from the war, injured but very much alive (they had thought he died). Nanny McPhee remarks that her final lesson was complete; to have faith.
    • Mrs. Docherty revealing that she was Baby Aggie Brown from the first film, sadly remarking "Nanny McPhee" doesn't like goodbyes, by ringing the rattle that her mother gave her, and Nanny McPhee had restored with magic.
    • One wonders if Nanny Mc Phee doesn't like goodbyes because she's already had so many in the past that she really cannot bear to endure any more........
  • Agatha Brown's appearance. Though she is the one who officially connects the two films along with Nanny McPhee and their relationship is perfectly played out, her presence as an old woman does mean that most of her siblings, if not all, have already passed away (and even if they're still alive, Mr. Brown and Evangeline are definitely dead). Especially if you take into account that Baby Aggie didn't have too much protagonism in the first film and that her older brothers and sisters were the leads.
    • Possibly made worse/lampshaded by Mrs. Docherty remarking that all of her cousins are dead.
  • Celia running happily to her mother's car believing she came up to pick up her and Cyril at the farm only to see the backseat empty and when she asks her chauffeur, he sadly tells her mother was busy and didn't sent him to pick her up but to give her a pair of shoes she left home.
  • Cyril and Celia being sent away to live with their cousins at the farm, not because of the bomb attacks on London but because their parents are getting divorced.
  • Isabel and her family being heartbroken after reading Phil's telegram saying her husband died in action. Fortunately, it was later revealed that the telegram was fake and Rory was still alive, but still...
