Warning: Spoilers Off applies to Moments pages. Proceed at your own risk!

  • A surprising number of episodes approach this. The reunion of Mira and her ex in the midst of battle in "Star Crossed" is one of the most effective.
  • The movie "The Adventure Begins" gets very dark just ten minutes in with the supposed death of Buzz's partner, Warp Darkmatter.
Buzz: (solemnly) Space Ranger Warp Darkmatter sacrificed himself for the success of his mission, for the safety of his fellows. I miss him very much.
    • His log entry after the eulogy is pretty depressing too, where he blames himself for what happened.
Buzz: Buzz Lightyear, personal log. In his crazed attempt to destroy me, Zurg has robbed the universe of a good man. My partner, my friend. On this day I vow, no ranger will ever again fall in harm's way because of me. I. Work. Alone.
    • When Buzz first learns just who Agent Z really is, especially considering Warp was thought dead. It really doesn't help either when it turns out he and Zurg recorded a video of Warp's eulogy, and keep rewinding it at "I miss him very much" and laughing cruelly at it.
    • The moment when XR gets graphically blown to bits by Agent Z in the movie, despite him being a non-sentient robot at the time. Buzz and Commander Nebula — who, only minutes prior, made it abundantly clear how much he hated robots — looked pretty devastated.
Buzz: The Uni-Mind has been captured, and... (cuts to XR's exploded remains) We've got a Ranger down.
    • The XR moment hits home harder in the series itself with Patrick Warburton as Buzz's voice. While Tim Allen delivers Buzz's "XR!" with shock, Patrick Warburton's take on the character has him deliver the line as if he's on the verge of a tearful panic attack at seeing another Space Ranger die on his watch.
  • Ty in "Wirewolf", it's obvious despite his resentment of Buzz that he doesn't wish to hurt anyone.
    • The look of shame on Ty's face despite the fact he'd saved Buzz from the Wirewolf by taking control of it.
  • The heartbroken look on Ty's face when Commander Nebula takes him off active duty in "Revenge of the Monsters". Nebula even sympathizes with Ty, but explains that he can't risk letting the Wirewolf lose.
    • The moment when NOS-4-A2 confronts Ty again, and Ty's understandable terror when he transforms into the Wirewolf again.
    • Zurg's offhanded insult towards Ty when he, as the Wirewolf, and XL march into his throne room.
Zurg: Well, well, well. If it isn't Star Command's favorite failures.
  • Buzz getting worried in "Ancient Evil" when Warp Darkmatter gets his life energy drained out and turns into a weak old man could count as one, especially when he hears from the LGM's that Warp might not be able to get up and running again, and exclaims in a clearly broken tone, "But... He has to be alright!!" Even after all of their battles, Buzz still obviously cared about his ex-friend. Shortly afterwards, Warp's heart stops, leaving a flat line on the monitor. Buzz loses it, and yells out "WARP!!!!" in a desperate tone, slamming the table with his fists in anguish. Lucky that Disney doesn't kill off most of the characters for real, but still...
  • The episode "Lost in Time" is oddly melancholic. After a freak accident with a black hole, Buzz is sent far into the future, to a time where evil is defeated and Star Command and the space rangers are nothing but history. Buzz, now a mere relic of a bygone era, is relegated to a museum guide telling tales about the good old days. It turns out that it was a plot by Zurg, however.
  • Combined with Nightmare Fuel, the Evil Buzz Lightyear attacked Jo-Ad and Tangea. After that, both the alternate Mira and Booster lost their homes especially Mira who implied that she was Forced to Watch the Evil Buzz murder King Nova in cold blood.
Alternate!Mira: (aiming a gun at Good!Buzz) This is for what you did to Tangea, for what you did to my father! I never got the chance to tell him that I loved him!
Good!Buzz: (tenderly) See? For all your rebellious fights with your father, you still care deeply. And you should have told him- hey, wait a minute! What'd I do to him?
    Alternate!Mira: You did this. (fires)
  • The moment in "The Slayer" when while trying to find XR, Buzz and Savy SL-2 discover NOS-4-A2's lair, riddled with the drained bodies of his victims... Savy's adoptive robot parents being amongst them.
