Shout Out / Shrek 2

Go To

  • Prince Charming walks in on the Big Bad Wolf with a swimsuit issue of Pork Illustrated.
  • During "Accidentally in Love":
  • When leaving for Far Far Away, Donkey sings the theme from Rawhide. Apparently, this was a Throw It In! by Eddie Murphy.
    • As he begins to pass out from drinking the potion, he tries to cheer up Shrek by singing "Tomorrow" from Annie. He then shouts, "I'm coming, Elizabeth!" before losing consciousness.
  • After the messenger and his band show up at Shrek's house, one of the trumpet players begins to play the theme from Hawaii Five-O before the messenger stops him.
  • Shrek refers to the messenger and company as "Sgt. Pompous and the Fancy-Pants Club Band", referring to The Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
  • During the dinner scene, Shrek drinks from a finger bowl, mistaking it for soup. The same faux pas happens in The Prince and the Pauper.
  • At the Fairy Godmother's line "the kind of gal the prince would date", the mirror shows then-Prince Charles, who had many girlfriends as a bachelor.
  • King Harold mentions that his crusade wound is playing up.
  • Friar's Fat Boy is a send-up of restaurant chain Bob's Big Boy, known for the giant statue of its mascot out front.
  • After Harold is dropped off back at the castle he asks how he is supposed to get rid of Shrek, whereupon the Fairy Godmother tosses him the axe that came with Charming's Medieval Meal.
    Fairy Godmother: Use your imagination.
  • The "Sir Justin" seen in a picture on Fiona's ceiling is Justin Timberlake, who was dating her voice actress Cameron Diaz at the time this film came out. Timberlake later voiced Artie in Shrek the Third.
  • Shrek and Donkey pass a "bush that's shaped like Shirley Bassey". It even looks like her in one of her stage poses.
  • Puss in Boots bursting out of Shrek's shirt recalls the infamous chestburster scene from Alien.
  • Puss carves a P into a tree with his sword the same way Zorro carves a Z into his enemies. This also counts as an Actor Allusion, since Antonio Banderas played both characters.
  • Before settling on the Happily Ever After potion, Puss suggests "Elfa-Seltzer" and "Hex-Lax"; Alka-Seltzer is a brand of antacid, while Ex-Lax is a constipation drug.
  • When the Fairy Godmother's factory is flooded with potion, two of the workers are transformed into Lumiere and Cogsworth. A swan is also transformed into a beautiful girl, referencing The Swan Princess.
  • Prince Charming vows to kill Shrek after seeing what the ogre did to his Godmother's potion factory, positioning his sword between his eyes in a way reminiscent of Mulan completing her disguise as Ping.
  • The network broadcasting the ball references E!, which also had Joan Rivers as a red carpet host for the Golden Globe Awards.
  • "K.N.I.G.H.T.S" is a reference to the real-life TV series COPS. Gingy also mentions another show called "Wheel of Torture".
    • Donkey is identified as "a white bronco heading east into the forest", referencing the white Ford Bronco driven by Al Cowlings during the infamous O. J. Simpson police chase.
  • Gingy, Pinocchio, the Three Little Pigs and the Three Blind Mice rescue Shrek, Donkey and Puss to the iconic Mission: Impossible theme tune. Pinocchio also does the "Mission: Impossible" Cable Drop in homage to the first movie.
  • Puss mutters "I hate Mondays." during the bar scene.
  • The Fairy Godmother has a potion for desperate measures to get Fiona's arranged marriage back on track. It comes in a bottle marked with a heart symbol and the Roman numeral IX, a subtle reference to The Clovers song, "Love Potion No. 9".
  • Before Mongo makes his first appearance, vibrations are shown in two people's teas similar to the vibrating water shot from Jurassic Park.
  • Mongo attempts to drink from the giant cup on top of a "Farbucks Coffee" shop, making the terrified patrons run to the other one across the street.
  • Mongo reacts with a Godzilla-esque roar when the guards take off his gumdrop button. His final words to Gingy as he sinks into the moat are "Be... good".
  • During "Livin' la Vida Loca", Puss parodies the water drop scene from Flashdance.
