The Fruit Basket (also known as Fruitland or Ávaxtakarfan) was an Icelandic children's TV series that premiered in 2012 and was based off of the popular Icelandic musical The Fruit Basket. The series was originally filmed in Icelandic and later dubbed into English, although the English version never aired. The Icelandic series was also edited into a made-for-TV movie. The series follows the residents of the Fruit Basket, comprised of eight fruits and eventually one vegetable. It discussed issues such as prejudice and bullying, and the Icelandic version of the series contains at least one song per episode.

The Fruit Basket contains examples of:

  • Aesop Amnesia: At the end of the very first episode, the fruits agree to never bully or tease each other again. This doesn't last.
    • In the third episode, they learn not to be prejudiced against vegetables. This lasts until the finale, in which Banana Bob tells Kerry Carrot that a vegetable can't possibly be a guard!
  • Bumbling Henchmen Duo: Banana Bob and Green Banana
  • Catchphrase: Fandalaggahoj!
  • Character Exaggeration: Annie Orange's stage counterparts are shown to be a little bit ditzy, but the TV series really exaggerates this along with her whininess.
  • Demoted to Extra: Kerry Carrot (aka Gedda Gulrot) played a huge part in the original Icelandic stage show and was instrumental in bringing equality to the Fruit Basket but in the TV series she hardly shows up at all!
  • Dub Name Change: In the English dub of the series, all the character's names have been changed. Immi Ananas becomes Pineapple Pete, Guffi Banani to Banana Bob, Maeja Jardarber to Strawberry May etc.
  • Dumb Blonde: Annie Orange
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: Pineapple Pete’s full name is dropped twice in the series when he gets in trouble... Pineapple Peter Nathaniel (Icelandic: Immanúel Aðalsteinn Ananas)
  • Neat Freak: Unlike her stage show counterpart, Strawberry May appears to actually enjoy cleaning up after everyone. May is frequently shown either sweeping or picking up trash.
  • Only Sane Man: Red Apple can be considered this most of the time.
    • Kerry Carrot counts as well.
  • Sick Episode: Episode 7 involves multiple characters getting sick and having to be taken care of by Annie, who also gets sick at the end of the episode.
  • Team Mom: Red Apple’s relationship with Pineapple Pete is often reminiscent of a parent trying to placate their bratty child. The first episode shows Red comforting Strawberry May and disapproving of the other fruits teasing her. Red is also the oldest in the Fruit Basket.
  • Toilet Humour: The entire third episode revolves around farting.
  • Un Evil Laugh: Banana Bob is technically a villain (although, arguably, most characters are at some point) but his laugh absolutely does not reflect this - "huehuehuehuehue"
