Sandbox / Perverse Sexual Lust Wick Check

Go To

Perverse Sexual Lust is a trope that refers to sexual attraction to a fictional character. However, its name, a reference to a poll run by the creator of the webcomic It's Walky!, does not properly indicate this, coming across more like a reference to the general concept of lust, which is far too broad a concept to be tropeworthy.

During the wick check I ran for "You Can Panic Now" (now Media Scaremongering), I found that most of the examples under Main/ were correct, while those in other namespaces tended to be incorrect. I expect that pattern to repeat here.

Wicks checked: 50/50

Total examples checked: 53/53(?)

    open/close all folders

    Correct Usage (36/53)
  1. Analysis.Draco In Leather Pants: It is possibly a real-life example of All Girls Want Bad Boys (most victims of this trope are male). Characters of this type are also often prime repositories for being a fetish, so softening their darker aspects may, in some cases, be a fan's self-justification for their own Perverse Sexual Lust. I'd say from context that this is a correct example.
  2. Awesome.Lucahjin: Most of the time she was able to piece things together right away, and even when her speculations were way off-base, she ended up being Right for the Wrong Reasons anyway. In the end, she only took 3 penalties throughout her entire blind playthrough, which is quite an achievement. Perhaps she was trying extra hard in order to impress Edgeworth. Seems about right, but if anyone has a second opinion, it would be appreciated.
  3. CharacterGush.Comic Books: Nightwing! Don't forget Nightwing! Not only was he the first Robin, he managed to survive all those years as Robin and then branched out to become epic himself. And dang me, but he's pretty... Again, seems about right.
  4. Characters.Baka And Test Summon The Beasts: Perverse Sexual Lust: In Volume 9 she is disappointed that the pretty boys are only in 2D.
  5. Characters.Danny Phantom Stranded: Perverse Sexual Lust: He admits to having a crush on Kim Possible, who is a fictional character in the story. He ends up being involved with a cheerleader who is able to kick butt in his actual life.
  6. Manga.Gundam Sousei: Instory, Animec Editor-in-Chief Komaki, at least early on, is obsessed with the eponymous heroine of Anne of Green Gables. And that's not getting to why Tomino knows about Sayla Mass' unmentionables. second one is in the same franchise though, i think??? maybe split wick between categories???
  7. Characters.Hatchetfield Families: Perverse Sexual Lust: Sherman's sexuality revolves around fictional children's characters and inanimate representations thereof, and it seems unlikely he has ever had any kind of sexual or romantic relationship with a living human, nor does he have any desire to. One of the best examples I've seen so far.
  8. Characters.Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger: He has a thing for the in-universe anime character Aoi.
  9. Characters.Squid Girl: He's absolutely obsessed with Misaki-chan, a female fighting game character. He uses her victory pose to soothe his "broken soul" after striking out with real girls. Although he refuses to buy otaku merch so he can try and keep his dignity, through a convoluted series of events he ends up with multiple Misaki figures, including a life-sized one.
  10. Characters.Yu Gi Oh The Abridged Series Supporting Characters: He has a not-so-secret love affair with his Black Luster Soldier poster.
  11. Funny.Lindsay Ellis: To the question "Who is sexier: Starscream or daddy?"
Lindsay: Well, which daddy? There are 8 of those now. (beat) Starscream.
  12. Funny.Tamaras Never Seen: Jurassic Park: Her adorably bad Perverse Sexual Lust-tinged impression of Jeff Goldblum.
  13. Her Code Name Was "Mary Sue": Doctor Who: What few bits we hear of River Song's detective novel in "The Angels Take Manhattan" are mostly about how incredibly cool and impossibly sexy her main character Melody Malone is, who is basically herself. The Doctor claims to fancy the character. The Defictionalised book is also mainly about how sexy Melody is, mixed up with stuff about Melody flirting outrageously with various disgustingly hot rich people who all adore her, and torturously uncool Private Eye Monologue sections, but it seems River was intentionally writing in a campy style for humour, as she's very good when she concentrates. I think this qualifies.
  14. Homestuck.Tropes A To L: Humanity Is Infectious: Traits that the Troll culture regards as unusual - and exhibited by the protagonists - start to seep into their behavior the longer they interact with the humans. In Vriska's case, she gets Perverse Sexual Lust for one of the characters in one of John's favorite movies.
  15. HorrifyingTheHorror.Anime And Manga: The World God Only Knows: Nora (an immortal demon) attempts to Mind Rape Keima (a human). After a bit of confusion as to the nature of his brain (it displays a loading screen and a copyright notice), she tears apart his image of his beloved Yokkyun. He gets pissed, and chases Nora around like a maniac, demanding she bring Yokkyun back. Nora runs away screaming at the scary monster. seems dude's an otaku
  16. I'm Going to Hell for This: The Steven Universe fandom on Tumblr has spent a while circulating a post that uses letters from the show opening and title cards, assembled like newspaper fragments in a ransom demand, to spell "I'M IN LOVE WITH CARTTOON (sic) SPACE ROCKS AND I'M GOING TO HELL". I believe this type of meme is called "Expand Dong".
  17. Intentionally Awkward Title: You Can't Fuck Osmosis Jones is a blog dedicated to tongue-in-cheek rants about cartoon characters where having a Perverse Sexual Lust for them would be especially impractical or ridiculous.
  18. LetsPlay. The Deadbeats: The second episode of the Sonic Trilogy of Pain has Saint bring up the question of whether the group would have sex with Rouge the Bat "just to say you did it". Hinchy strongly rejects the idea - among other reasons, because Sonic franchise characters only have "one eye".
  19. Literature. The Princess Diaries: More than once Mia's friends tease her about her weird love for two-dimensional guys, including "Hellboy, Tarzan, the Beast, Tom Sloane, and that hot soldier guy".
  20. Main.Comically Invincible Hero: The BLU and RED Heavy duo from Pootis Engage are complete Juggernauts who act like they are under the effects of Ubercharge constantly, able to shrug off almost never-ending hails of bullets and even rockets. Fueled by the need to collect extra thicc anime ass and titties from Area 51. Even when they meet their match in EXTREME and BLU Heavy is actually killed, he immediately gets revived by his severed hand touching a sandvich.
  21. Moe.Anime And Manga: Welcome to the NHK: Kaoru Yamazaki (despite being responsible for the image above) is not only an Otaku specializing in this ,but he has some Moe traits of his own such as being a Keet and Jerkass Woobie courtesy of his Freudian Excuse for his misogyny towards 3D women. Since this is still NHK, there is a tragic side since people think of him as a creep for being a pedophile.
  22. Nobody Thinks It Will Work: Fushigi Yuugi, between the Official Couple, of course! It's because she's the Priestess and he's her Seishi, she's from the real world and he's a character in the book, none of the Four Gods would ever allow it, they can't cross the erotic line... it's forbidden love at its extremity. The subversion is that it's a POV only mostly by Tamahome's mentor and by Miaka and Tamahome themselves after they've realized how difficult it is. Seems legit... Just.
  23. Rule 34 – Creator Reactions: Ed Helms, the voice of The Once-ler from The Lorax is also aware of how the film’s fanbase can get pretty… scandalous with the already-mentioned character he played as. He's not quite right about oncest (don't ask how I know this) but this example is correct.
I heard there are people who have a sexual predilection for my character in the Lorax named the Once-ler, and that having sex with the Once-ler is referred to as Oncest? And someone just tweeted that. And that is very odd, because he’s not a real person. I do agree, however, that he’s extremely sexy. But I don’t condone sexual fantasy about the Once-ler. I don’t condone it.
  24. Webcomic.Shortpacked: A very negative in-universe example: Omnios appeared in a three-strip run in November 2008, a 26-year-old social outcast with "Aspergers-y" symptoms who continuously raves about his crush on Jenny Wakeman. Turns out that Omnios was a real user on the Allspark Forums, which David Willis is a member of. Omnios has since been banned, but he's achieved a bit of Memetic Mutation as one who One Who Must Not Be Spoken Of amongst the Allspark users.
  25. Funny.SFDebrisStarTrexVoyager: *** Harry tries to flirt with Seven over her attempts at dating, pointing that they may have something in common, namely her interest in music and him playing the clarinet. Seven coldly informs him that he is not on the list of candidates for her dates. If my belief that the belowmentioned characters are the protagonists of Totally Spies! is correct, then this is a very fitting example.
Harry: (obviously trying not to cry) That's fine... There is always Alex, Sam, and Clover waiting for me...
  26. Funny.Supermarioglitchy4sSuperMario64Bloopers2022Bloopers: ** Tari defeating Mario's side character NFTs by making Whimpu Simp for her Dark Magician Girl card. It's hard to get the full context for this, but I think this is about right.
  27. Gush.WesternAnimation (example 1): ** The Little Mermaid. Ariel is so freaking HOT!
  28. Gush.WesternAnimation (example 2): ** Oh dear God, seconded. Goliath. David Xanatos. Win. Based on the page it's on, this is unlikely to be misuse, bu feel free to disagree.
  29. Gush.WesternAnimation (example 3): * I know Teen Titans (2003) had its Anvilicious moments, but by golly, I love that show anyway. Robin may be partly responsible, but still... "How Long Is Forever?" is one of the most heartbreaking and yet beautiful television episodes I've ever seen. And as for "The End"...wow, just wow. 'Based on the admittedly limited context, this seems about right.
  30. Come for the X, Stay for the Y * Who Framed Roger Rabbit: Come for the Medium Blending Visual Effects of Awesome (or, in some cases, Jessica), stay for the fantastic storyline and the countless cartoon cameos. As the very name Jessica Rabbit is practically synonymous with this trope, there can be no doubt that this is correct.
  31. How to Become a Love Interest: Be aloof, quiet, and generally bad. Even if you don't get the girl, fangirls will flock all over you because there must, simply must, be a sensitive, tormented poetic soul underneath that bad boy veneer.
  32. The Ship Yard: ** When the shipper is part of the ship or is a Shipper on Deck or a Navigator.
  33. Twitch Plays Touhoumon & Moemon: * Perverse Sexual Lust: Moémon attractiveness is a major factor in whether the mob wants a certain mon or not. This was most blatant with "Butterbae" the Butterfree. Within context, I'd say this is accurate.
  34. Heir Apparent: * Doppelgänger Replacement Love Interest: Giannine develops a bit of a crush on the NPC Kenric. For obvious reasons, they can't exactly be together once she's escaped the game. Luckily, he looks just like the game's Teen Genius creator, who shows up to apologize to the heroine personally and seems flattered that she liked the character based on him...
  35. Nintendo Power: * Perverse Sexual Lust: Some of the writers seem to have crushes on Ada from Resident Evil. Borderline ZCE, but technically correct usage.
  36. YMMV.GravityFalls: ** .GIFfany, a character made as a message against Perverse Sexual Lust and as a criticism of dating sims, has gained a number of fans that found her genuinely hot and even has a small number of fan fiction pairing her with a self-insert. Usually this goes in-hand with her Draco in Leather Pants treatment. And besides, she's taken by Rumble McSkirmish anyway. A reference to the trope itself. Perfectly acceptable use.

Generally perverted and/or lustful behaviour (3/53)
  1. Literature.Ivanhoe: William Makepeace Thackeray was in love with Rebecca.
"... ever since I grew to love Rebecca, that sweetest creature of the poet's fancy, and longed to see her righted."
    Excerpt from Rebecca and Rowena
  2. Too Bleak, Stopped Caring.Literature: A Song of Ice and Fire: Tellingly, Vox Day, author of A Throne of Bones pointed out that his real issue with the stories was not so much the ugliness, hatred, and perversion within the narrative as the near-complete absence of beauty, love, and normalcy to counter them.
  3. Equestrylvania: Genre Blind: Shatterstorm feels that Rainbow Dash is this towards the... attention she gets from the other Royal Guards in Canterlot, to the point that he pretends to be her boyfriend to make them back off.

    Other misuse

    Violates IUEO (4/53)
  1. JustHereForGodzilla.Live Action Films: Who Framed Roger Rabbit: It's been said that Jessica Rabbit was the source of multiple viewings for some... audience reaction
  2. Naughty Nurse Outfit: In Hayate the Combat Butler, Maria put on glasses and a nurse outfit in Chapter 140 as a disguise at the suggestion of Nagi's bodyguards. It didn't conceal her identity in the slightest, but viewers certainly didn't mind. I'm putting it here because it's talking about real-life viewers reacting to the in-universe outfit.
  3. RogerRabbitEffect.Advertising: Those e-surance commercials in which famed pink-haired superspy and nerd heartthrob Erin Esurance "draws" various customers to their auto insurance. I think this is about real-life viewers?
  4. YMMV.TheLegendOfSpyroZonoyasRevenge ** Given some of the things that happened in the comic, some of ShaloneSK's comments and other drawings, and the fact that Zonoya was raped by Malefor yet is implied to have liked it, the Bad Webcomic wiki seems convinced that Shalone has a dragon fetish, or at least, a thing for Malefor. This is listed under Alternate Character Interpretation, and is speculating about a real person, specifically a webcomic author.

    Zero-Context Examples (2/53)
  1. The Missing Link: Perverse Sexual Lust: The "No-Man" race uses this to their advantage while hunting. This explains literally nothing, but from what I can glean elsewhere on the page, it's unlikely to be a correct use.
  2. Who Framed Roger Rabbit: Perverse Sexual Lust: Most men's intense interest in Jessica Rabbit is portrayed as this. While Jessica is practically the poster girl for this trope out-of-universe, I cannot recall any in-universe appearances of this IUEO trope in this film. Either way, this example does not properly explain itself, so I'm putting it in the ZCE folder.

    Unclear/Other (8/53)
  1. Double Standard: Evil Is Sexy: There's nothing abnormal about finding a sexy person sexy, even if they're a total douchebag. However, if a girl finds an evil guy really hot, it's often pegged as Draco in Leather Pants. If a guy finds an evil woman really hot, he's just being smart. Women have Perverse Sexual Lust? Since when? Not enough context here to properly sort this example, but not quite a ZCE.
  2. Characters.Persona 5 Ann Takamaki: Dude Magnet: A lot of guys have the hots for Ann. Morgana openly crushes on her, Ryuji mentions finding her attractive (though it is Ryuji), and Yusuke shows hints of attraction (at the very least wanting to paint her beauty after seeing her). Joker also has a couple of animated cutscenes and dialogue that imply that he's physically attracted to her as well, which he outright confirms in the manga. Then there's the whole unpleasant business with Kamoshida and his Perverse Sexual Lust. She usually enjoys flaunting her looks, but is very quick to object if it's not on her terms. I don't think this is accurate, but I don't know enough about the work in question to say for sure.
  3. Characters.Twitch Plays Pokemon Fire Red: Recurring Element: Inherits the "WE NEED TO [X] [Y]" role thanks to his being stronger than TTP Red's Blue.note  potentially.
  4. Blue Monday: Perverse Sexual Lust: In universe. Bleu tries to think about Mr. Bishop the first time she masturbates, but the chaste, Courtly Love she has for him makes getting off difficult. But fantasizing about Alan? Does the trick in no time. She's not sure how to feel after that. Depending on who "Mr. Bishop" isnote , this may or may not be correct usage.
  5. Chomperronpa: Preserved Killing: Fridge Logic: During his time alone, Zarc starts wondering the physics of Real Solid Vision monsters. This then dives into Brain Bleach territory when he imagines if you can have sex with them. Again, I am not familiar enough with the work to say for sure if this is correct.
  6. Funny.BionicCommando If you die against it, the intro dialogue gets changed, with Super Joe telling you, instead of "you'll just have to fight it", "You'll just have to fuck it!" Pothole without context. Seems like it could be an example, but it's a stretch.
  7. Gush.WesternAnimation (example 4): ** Well, the first season was pretty generic Magical Girl fare, but the second season (with Greg freaking Wiseman on board) was awesome...especially Nerissa, particularly at the end... 'Pothole without context. I wouldn't quite'' call it a ZCE, and it seems unlikely to be a misuse, but unlike the other examples from that page, I don't feel confident puttin it in Correct Usage.
