YMMV / The Legend of Spyro: Zonoya's Revenge

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Given Ember and Flame's interactions and that neither couple apparently even spoke with each other for years after Ash and Nina hatched gives the impression that Ember is still bitter over losing Spyro.
    • The way Nina seems oblivious to all the trouble caused by Zonoya and Frijir and frequently goes back to them despite what Zonoya did to her makes her less innocent and trusting and more naïve to the point of stupidity.
    • Given some of the things that happened in the comic, some of ShaloneSK's comments and other drawings, and the fact that Zonoya was raped by Malefor yet is implied to have liked it, the Bad Webcomic wiki seems convinced that Shalone has a dragon fetish, or at least, a thing for Malefor.
    • Spyro spends so much of the latter half of the comic trying to keep Nina away from Frijir that it seems less like he's wary of the spawn of Malefor and more like something else...
  • Angst? What Angst?: Nina is never affected by anything, from Zonoya kidnapping her to Frijir possessing her.
  • Broken Base: This comic was unironically popular originally. However, when the Bad Webcomic Wiki featured a review on it, there was a new major split between those who still like it unironically and those who dislike it for the many, many flaws pointed out in the review.
  • Canon Defilement: Spyro becomes a near bipolar nutcase who attempts to murder a child, the back story isn't even remotely close to how it is in canon... And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
  • Designated Love Interest: Ember settles for Flame when Cynder beats her for Spyro's love and the two are rarely seen alone together, only to do things like calling each other fat and Flame implying that Cynder is better looking than Ember.
    • Zonoya and Rapture. She treats him like a rebound at best and like crap at worst, continuing to mourn Malefor after apparently realizing Rapture loved her. We also don't know why exactly Rapture loves Zonoya to begin with.
    • Sparx and Layla, as most of their interactions revolve around Sparx's temptation to eat her.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Even among the comic's detractors, Rapture is regarded as one of the best characters in it, if only because he's the closest the comic has to an Only Sane Man.
  • Fan Nickname: Frijirator, poking fun at Fijir's extremely odd sounding name for the Spyro universe.
  • Memetic Mutation: Parenting is haaarrrrrd! Explanation
  • Narm:
    • After her first defeat, Zonoya is in her lair licking her wounds when Rapture jokes about sneaking out into the night and stealing the crystal without anyone looking, to which she replies that it's a fanatastic idea and manages to pull it off without a hitch. This, of course, begs the question of why she didn't do this in the first place!
    • When the dragons come to rescue their children, what does Spyro take the most offense over? Not the bump on Nina's head, no... He takes the most offense to Frijir had the audacity to nuzzle his daughter!
    • Cynder came across Anmitsuho's home and then stole the crystal for the sole purpose of giving it to baby Nina
  • Never Live It Down: Quite possibly the most infamous part of this comic is how it handles Spyro himself, the crowner being him attempting to kill a child in cold blood. Regardless if said child is Malefor's son, many found it wildly out of character for him to attempt that. Even though the author caught on to this in the end by having Ignitus call Spyro out on his behavior for a greater part of the comic at the end. For many people, though, it was way too late to save it, as it's still the first major complaint people will likely bring up in regards to the comic.
  • The Scrappy: Ash, the Designated Love Interest of Nina, spends a greater part of the comic just acting like an asshat to Frijir and never gets any commupance for it.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Rapture's feelings for Zonoya come out of nowhere in the second chapter.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Frijir. The idea of Malefor having a young child does have some intrigue. There's so much potential for how the characters would react, how he would deal with learning this fact, and whether or not he would wind up evil himself... Unfortunately, at best, the comic skims over this issue, usually by having Zonoya or Nina steal the spotlight from him whenever he gets anything resembling focus. In fact, the one time this aspect actually gets focused on in the story, Spyro decides the best way to deal with this is to cut the knot right there and attempts to murder him, an act that is widely regarded as lowest point in the comic in regards to writing and Spyro's characterization... And even that gets swept under the rug sometime later! Really, you could replace Malefor as Frijir's dad with some other vaguely evil dragon and not much about the comic itself would change.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Really, this is the biggest problem with the comic. The characters that aren't turned into death eaters are derailed so much that they barely have a passing resemblance to their canon selfs.note  Combine this with the frequent Go-Karting with Bowser the main 'antagonist' does with the heroes, the 'main protagonist' being a ditz and the only sympathetic character often going through several layers of crap because of everyone around them, it can be hard to care about anything that happens in the story.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Frijir. As one review put it, though, he's sympathetic for reasons that weren't intended. Instead of feeling for him because he's the son of Malefor, many feel for him because he's Zonoya's son. Zonoya's parenting skills are iffy at best, she leaves him unsupervised frequently and it often ends up with either him getting beat up or almost murdered in one case. Not to mention that his crush ends up admitting they love someone else out of the blue in a matter of fact way in front of them, and then the kid ends up traumatized for a bit by said crush because her father attempted to kill him when he found out he was Malefor's offspring. The poor kid takes so much abuse and trauma it's a surprising he's still capable of coherent speak and thought processes at the end of the comic.
  • The Woobie: Admittedly, even the comics detractors feel bad for Frijir. Sure, he's the offspring of Malefor but the poor kid doesn't show any signs of being evil in the slightest. All he wants to do is play with the other kids but, over the course of the comic, he's had to deal with being mauled by Ash twice, having his love admit she loves someone else just because, nearly gets killed by an extremely out of character Spyro, ends up getting chased around by Nina after her father tried to kill him for hanging out with her, and that's not even mentioning him having Zonoya as a mother. Poor kid rarely, if ever, catches a break in this comic.
