Analysis:

  • HMSI and LCKHS have an inverse relationship
  • HMSI and LMA are very closely related, but there is a definitional difference. For the former, it is not necessarily romantic and the superhero does not need to like the other character for this to be a thing.

An example mixing all three correctly:

  • Wick Check Goal: To see if the examples of HMSI aren't mistaking it for the other two tropes

Hates My Secret Identity Check

    Correct
  • Batman: The Telltale Series: Other Characters - Agent Avesta: She seems to have a crush on Batman, but harbors a grudge for Bruce Wayne, both owing to her being a native of Gotham City. Depending on Bruce's actions in the previous season to repay his family's crimes, this can be mitigated somewhat; at the very least, she's quite suspicious. Subverted in episode 2, as it is revealed that she knows the true identity of Batman, and was the person who informed Waller. Later, it is heavily implied she develops for Bruce Wayne himself.
  • Big Hero 6: Civilians - Richardson Mole: He is a fanboy of "Lizard Guy" and a Sitcom Arch-Nemesis of Fred.
  • Big Hero 6 Family and Friends - Karmi: Karmi's in love with superhero Hiro, but really despises Hiro Hamada the student. Averted by "City of Monters" when Hiro and her become friends (and still loves Captain Cutie).
  • Cheshire (Miraculous Ladybug) - Alix: Alix becomes a big fan of Cheshire after being saved by the hero, but joins the bullying of Marinette when she joins the class.
  • DC Future State - Jace:
    • His parents Lucius and Tanya fully endorse the Magistrate's war effort against all masks after the personal tragedies the Fox Family were forced to endure thanks to their association with Batman. In fact, upon encountering the new Batman during his attempt to save the life of a suspect in his protective custody, Tanya's first instinct is to pull out a gun and attempt to murder Bats in cold blood even if it means potentially killing the innocent people around him if she misses. Jace has no choice but to wound her with a batarang before she can pull the trigger.
    • His older brother Luke is an inverted example. He absolutely despises Jace's guts and firmly believes their folks should've disowned him outright instead of continually entertain the idea that they could ever be a family again. But by virtue of being a member of the Batfamily, Luke admits to their youngest sister Tiffany in a moment of Dramatic Irony that anybody willing to take up the mantle of the Bat and fight for the people of Gotham has to be a good person.
  • The Thundermans: Mrs. Wong joins the Thundergirl fan club, but is always being unpleasant to Phoebe Thunderman.
  • Hannah Montana: Amber and Ashley, who bully Miley but idolize Hannah.
  • Cybergirl: Emerald and Sapphire are quite specific in stating they are Cybergirl's closest friends to their entire class. A class that includes Ashley and her two Secret Keepers, none of whom they like very much. Played for laughs when Jackson requests they get Cybergirl's autograph (knowing full well they can't!) and later when Cybergirl actually comes to rescue their mother, she pointedly ignores them (for her own amusement) when they say hello.
  • The Flash 2014 S 4 E 4 Elongated Journey Into Night: Ralph is one of the many admirers of the Flash. When he finds out that his Arch-Enemy Barry Allen is said hero, he begins lamenting the fact that he has to hate the Flash now.
  • Haven S 4 E 7 Lay Me Down: Nathan makes no secret he's not fond of the Lexie persona, which causes tension between him and Audrey.
  • Mega Man Star Force: Luna the Class Representative treats Geo like dirt, while admiring his alter ego Mega Man, especially after he saves her from an enemy attack.
  • Acception: It's a running gag early on that Iris and her posse love Gold Star and but mock and belittle Arcus whenever he offers fashion advice.
  • Masters of the Universe: Revelation: King Randor admires He-Man but seems to find Prince Adam a disappointment. He's shocked when he finds out they're the same person.
  • Sailor Moon Others - Mr and Mrs Aino: In one chapter, Mrs. Aino is thrilled at the chance to have her picture taken with Sailor V, but her relationship with her daughter is just one long chain of nagging and berating her without showing any real support.
  • Sidekick - Master XOX: Trevor idolizes XOX, but seems to hold nothing but contempt for XOX's civilian identity: his dad.
  • Jerk Jock - ComicBook.Spider Man: Eugene "Flash" Thompson, one of Spider-Man's foils. He bullies Peter Parker constantly, but is a big fan of Spider-Man, not knowing they're the same person. In a subversion, the comics have him and Peter actually becoming friends after they graduate from high school. How's that possible? He isn't without his bad sides; When he was framed for being the Hobgoblin, everybody believed it immediately.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling - WesternAnimation.Batman Beyond: * Matt is a major thorn in the side to his big brother Terry, but not as bad as most of the other examples on this page. They do get plenty of cool brotherly moments together to offset the times he acts like a little hellraiser. Terry is also secretly pleased by the fact that (Hates My Secret Identity) Matt is a big fan of the new Batman.

Correctly Labels It An Aversion

  • Aero: Inverted; Lei Ling's boyfriend Zou Yu loves her, but does not like Aero, even as he suspects that she is Aero.
  • Batwoman - Evan Blake: Inverted. He and Batwoman hate each other's costumed personas, but as civilians they're good friends and obviously don't know each other's secret.
  • Spider-Man 2: Since it's an inversion, Harry Osborn has a grudge against Spider-Man for causing his father Norman's death, but he's still a good friend for Peter Parker. Up until he gets to unmask Spider-Man...
  • Daredevil (2015): Inverted. Foggy is best friends with Matt, but has great distaste for Daredevil. This is especially so when Matt's moonlighting affects their handling of the Frank Castle trial.

Incorrect Use

  • Legends of the Dead Earth: In Catwoman Annual #3, Bruce and Selina Wayne's teenage son Dick Grayson Wayne despises Batman and Catwoman. He regards them as murderers and thieves who should be brought to justice by Commissioner Joker. Dick does not take it well when he discovers that Batman and Catwoman are his parents.
  • The Bold Caballero: For much of the film, Isabella is attracted to Don Diego; regarding him as amusing even if he is an Upper-Class Twit. However, she hates Zorro with a passion; believing that he murdered her father and having vowed to hunt him down and see him hanged.
  • Xena S 06 E 10 Old Ares Had A Farm: Greba reveals that she doesn't like war, which is an issue with the former god of war.
  • Supergirl (2015) S3E19 "The Fanatical": Kara bitterly notes that while Lena loves Kara, she now hates Supergirl. And she can't tell Lena the truth because then Lena would just lump her with every other person who betrayed her trust.
  • Smallville S 10 E 02 Shield: Clark new desk partner Cat Grant greatly dislikes the Blur.
  • No Such Thing As a Hopeless Case: Shigaraki despises All Might but thinks Toshinori is a nice guy. Toshinori sweats a bit when he hears just how much Shigaraki loathes his Hero self.
  • My Life as a Teenage Robot - Sheldon: Sheldon creates the superhero identity of Silver Shell so Jenny will date him (and to convince Jenny to date him for real). It eventually backfires when she gets frustrated with the Shell and traps Sheldon in a web of lies.
  • PS238 - Ron Peterson: Ron is very nice to Tyler during his school life, but he considers Moon Shadow to be The Jinx and the reason everything's gone wrong with his life. He is, naturally, completely unaware that Tyler and Moon Shadow are the same person.

  • Miss Melee: Jan is friends with Queen Evil's civilian identity.
  • Scarlet Lady: Chloé's very fond of her dear Adrikins, but can't stand Chat Noir because he's so disrespectful towards Scarlet Lady.
  • Spirit Hunter: NG: Downplayed with Akira's apathy towards Momo Kuruse, Kaoru's idol persona. While most people are head-over-heels for Momo, Akira is disinterested in her and prefers Kaoru to act like herself while around him.
  • BIA: After Pixie's online rivalry with a gamer called The Bestia has been built up for numerous episodes, exploding into outright hatred on her side, 2x11 reveals said gamer to be Luan. Only, Pixie doesn't know it yet. When she finds out, it gets ugly for a while before things are sorted out.
  • Julia Jekyll and Harriet Hyde: Everybody (except the Blisters) loves Julia Jekyll, but everybody (excluding Edward Knickers) is utterly terrified of Harriet Hyde.
  • Superior: Exa is in love with Sheila, but hates the Demon Queen.
  • Shimoneta: Anna has the hots for Tanukichi, yet she hates his SOX alter ego, not knowing that it's him. However, she instinctively recognizes his scent, which causes Anna to react against her will when she tries to unmask him. She becomes so distraught over her body betraying her feelings for Tanukichi that she leaps off the cliff in tears.
  • The Strange Revenge of Lena Luthor: Lena breaks her friendship with Supergirl when she discovers Kara kept her origins from her for years, but she does not know Linda is Supergirl; so even though she wants nothing with Supergirl, she still considers Linda her friend.
  • Zombie Land Saga: Major Characters - Policeman A: Policeman A hits on Yugiri when she's working, unaware she's one of the zombies he's terrified of.
  • Wayward Guide For The Untrained Eye Town Council - Riley: Riley, who is particularly against the werewolves, doesn't know her best friend and lover Olivia is a werewolf.
  • Super Gene - Huangfu: Loves Han Sen and is constantly trying to get into his pants, hates and tries to kill Dollar.
  • Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters - Jake: At least until episode #12, he prefers Riya's true self to Blindstrike.
  • Steven Universe — Jasper: She adores and is fanatically loyal to Pink Diamond but loathes Rose Quartz, unaware they were the same person.
  • Sailor Moon Main Cast - General: Sailors Uranus and Neptune are willing to let innocent bystanders suffer and even die to prevent a prophecy of doom, which gives them a very antagonistic relationship with the other Sailor Guardians. However, in their civilian identities, Haruka and Michiru are universally adored by their younger counterparts, and are fond of them in turn. In particular, Makoto greatly admires Haruka, but physically attacks Uranus after having her heart pulled out while Uranus and Neptune stood by and watched.
  • Marvel Rising - Cpt. Stacy: He sees Ghost Spider as nothing but a menace due to murdering his daughter Gwen's friend, not realizing that she's his daughter.
  • Lelouch of the Wings of Rebellion: Confidants - Rolo: Lelouch is the closest thing he has to a friend, but also wants to help arrest the Black Knights.
  • Leave for Mendeleiev - Aurore: She has a crush on Adrien, just like in canon. However, she thinks pretty low of Chat Noir, whom she sees as lazy and overreliant upon Ladybug to carry them to victory. Thank goodness she hasn't realized they're the same person. She eventually drops the crush on Adrian, though.
  • Gushing Over Magical Girls - Magia Magenta: She is constantly trying to get close to Utena not knowing that Utena herself is also her main enemy. Gets Played With as she is one of the first people to question whether Baiser is actually trying to defeat them or not.
  • Evil Genius Super Agents - Agent X: The Genius is significantly more polite and cordial when Agent X drops the act and speaks as Sam Hill the reporter. Agent X agrees — he hates the whole "Agent X" gimmick and will admit it to the Genius after a few confrontations, thinking more highly of himself as the man Sam Hill.
  • DuckTales 2017: Others - Darkwing: Not knowing Fenton and Gizmoduck are one and the same, Darkwing hates Gizmoduck for getting so much praise and attention that he doesn't. Meanwhile, he thinks Fenton is a swell guy and is grateful towards him for supplying his crimefighting tech and doing scientific research for him. Ironically, Darkwing thinks that Fenton doesn't like working with Gizmoduck.
  • Dominoes The Irregulars - Aoko: Aoko is romantically interested in Kaito until chapter 5 but intensely hates the Kaitou KID. [[spoiler:Now that she's found out they are one and the same, her feelings are more confused, but she's so far fervently sided with ISHA against him and is currently desperately clinging to any reason she can find to maintain that he's the bad guy to ISHA's good, even though those reasons keep collapsing into irrationality.
  • Avenger of Steel - The Hand (Kingpin): He publicly and effusively thanks Matt Murdock for rescuing Vanessa from a murder attempt (even grabbing him in a bear-hug), while he loathes Daredevil for ruining his attempt to seize control of New York.
  • Becoming Lífþrasir: Astrid feels guilt for being partially responsible for Hiccup's self-imposed exodus and proudly refers to him as her betrothed, thus finds Cattongue (Hiccup's Secret Identity) incredibly suspicious when he admits to knowing him. This comes as a shock towards Cattongue, who still has lingering feelings towards Astrid (and is played up to a humourous extent later on when Astrid admits that part of the reason for her hostility was that she was trying to hide her attraction to Cattongue from herself).
  • Fallen Hero - Ortega: Can happen to them in one of the ending variations of Rebirth - they're in love with the now civilian Sidestep, but view Sidestep's new villain persona as their nemesis.
  • The Mask: Turns out Stanley's crush on her was mutual, and she liked him enough to reveal her secrets as a jewel thief to him, because after all, "magicians never reveal their secrets". The Mask, however, she can't stand, much to his shock.

Correctly labeled an Inverse

  • Sure as the Setting Sun - Reigen: Inverted. He's a huge All Might fan but he doesn't trust Toshinori based on his questionable training methods.

Misuse

  • Space Ace: In the Saturday Supercade segments, whenever Ace is zapped by the Infanto Ray and reverts to his geeky alter ego of Dexter, Kimberly gets annoyed with Dexter as a scrawny, gawky, whiny, childish wimp.
  • Iron Ladies: Himiko's stepson, Zu Zi, is a huge fan of her Angel persona and has a lot of her images on posters and merchandise. Towards his stepmother, he is at best indifferent and at worst a rude jackass.
  • Let the Darkness Bring Us Into the Light - Katsuya: Towards Toshinori Yagi. He adores and admires his heroic persona for all the good he does to the community mixed with his noble personality. And while he doesn't hate Toshinori, he does have his suspicions about him given his cryptid work and how closely he's working with Izuku. Even going as far as to speculate that he's after his friend's organs.
  • Ava's Demon - Erios: Sound Master Byte is famous and popular, but in Erios' own words, "no one likes the Prismonarch".

    Loves My Alter Ego
  • Princess Knight: He loves Sapphire's female disguise but hates Prince Sapphire due to a misunderstanding.

    Ambiguous/Unclear
  • My Super Ex-Girlfriend: Turned completely on its head and deconstructed entirely. Matt initially goes out with the meek Jenny not knowing she was the adventurous and popular G-Girl, but eventually grows repulsed by how insanely possessive and selfish she is in both her super and secret identities. After all, personality flaws don't disappear just because someone happens to be a superhero in secret.

  • Mr. Love: Queen's Choice: Heroine’s Season Two relationships with Gavin and Lucien are this, due to the three of them standing on different alliances toying with different identities.
  • Lovbird - Damien: Since he refused to look under Lovbird's mask, he's got no clue she's Eve.

    Correct
  • Agravity Boys - Geralt: Befriended a woman online (by pretending to be a girl and using Chris's headshot for his profile pic). This is the best relationship he's ever had with a woman, but not only is it built on his online persona, but the woman is a high-ranking law enforcement official who is determined to take the real Geralt down for his part in a massive jailbreak.

No indication of the other side's feelings so it's unclear whether or not there's a Love Triangle

  • Hurricane Polymar: Teru love Polymar while is really cold with Takeshi.
  • Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel: Haruka loves Misty Knight, but has no idea that he's Yuito.
  • Persia, the Magic Fairy: Kenji, a famous pianist, falls for Persia's older self.
  • Magical Emi, the Magic Star: Downplayed. Sho has some interest in Emi, but, in general, he is more interested in the boxe (he is an aspiring boxer).
  • Ben 10: Supporting Characters - Kai: In her first appearance, she was more interested in Ben when he was Blitzwolfer.
  • All Saints Street - Axel: He doesn't know Nick at all, but he's absolutely smitten with "Nico" and fumbles all over himself trying to impress her. When he does see a connection between her and Nick, it's only because he thinks the latter is "her" brother.
  • Ayakashi Triangle - Lu: To Lu, Matsuri is a girl friend and Shirogane is some stray cat that hangs around school. But she loves "Shiromatsu", who is actually Shirogane taking the form of boy Matsuri.
  • Batman: The Animated Series – Allies - Veronica Vreeland: Marilu Henner has described her character as follows: "Veronica's the type of person who would reject Bruce for being too boring, then sit around wondering why Batman hasn't called her."
  • Black Cat (Marvel Comics): The biggest black spot in her relationship with Spider-Man. She finds him fun and exciting, and proves herself a compatible partner to his heroics, but becomes extremely weirded out when she meets his civilian identity of Peter Parker, finding him plain and boring. In Ultimate Spider-Man, she goes so far as to vomit on him after lifting the mask due to him being a lot younger than she expected. It's referenced in Marvel: Avengers Alliance, where their team-up bonus is called as "cosplayers", as they are closer when they're in costume. This is something she really starts mentally kicking herself for after she realizes that she really does love Peter... a little too late, since he's Happily Married to MJ by that point.
  • Code Geass - Main Characters - Kallen: In season one, she thinks Lelouch is an arrogant Jerkass, but adores his alter ego Zero as a brave freedom fighter. After learning Zero's identity, at the very end of season one, it takes her a while to adjust to the concept, but eventually she goes deredere for him in both roles and slowly falls in love with the man behind the mask.
