Sandbox / Hackette Wick Check

Go To

TRS OP:

Months ago, I discovered Hackette was a thing on TV tropes and... was sorely confused. The non-indicative name and image didn't help at all, but I started reading the examples and noticed the vast majority of them were just "Girl is hacker" and decided to start my first wick check.

And I was right, as the wick check shows, it's majoritarily used for just "Female Hacker" (or sometimes just "Woman who is good with computers"). It's also got a lot of ZCE that are just character names, which is probably coming from that misused definition. A lot of potholes also resume themselves to just the character name.

(Wick Check in progress 47/50)

    open/close all folders
     Correct Usage (3/50)
  • Lycoris Recoil: Main Characters: Because of the voice modulator she uses and the long career of the Walnut identity, everyone assumes Walnut is a man, or as she puts it, "a malicious, thin, four-eyed boy" envisioned by people who watch too many movies. Throughout the series, Kurumi shows herself to be able to hack advanced systems almost as easily as breathing.
  • Va 11 Hall A: Alma deliberately invokes this, as clients who see her face-to-face tend to either think she's a brainless bimbo or want to sleep with her (or both). PCE, but from the character page, seems like it fits
  • The Heist: Monaco: Because Eris never described what Blackbird looks like, neither Lee or Rye suspected one of the most famous hacktivist to be a suburban mom.
     Misuse and ZC Es (30/50)
  • Earth Twenty Seven Atlantis: Not only Lorena is well-versed in social media, but she is also an expert computer programmer and hacker. She is also highly capable of conducting vast amounts of research online — often with nothing more than a smart phone.
  • Tropes Hto M: Felicity Smoak, aided by the Magical Computer and Everything Is Online factor.
  • The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo 2011: Lisbeth
  • Earth Twenty Seven August 8 Cluster: Nomi is an incredibly skilled hacker. Though her new psionic abilities have dropped her into a whole new playing field, she was exceptional enough hacker on her own that she had considerable commercial success marketing her skills. She is also a highly skilled programmer and computer engineer.
  • Daredevil: Rogues Gallery: She's a female hacker.
  • TheParryGod: The female rebel in Anti-Citizens, who's able to breach a Combine door lock, operate their alien computers, and is probably responsible for rigging the rebels' jammer, too.
  • Neurotically Yours: She communicates by texts, thus she hacks into phones
  • NEO: The World Ends with You: Managed to become a genius hacker between games, to the point of being able to hack directly into the RNS in order to communicate with Beat.
  • Characters/Crossing lines: Expecting Someone Taller/Hackette: The team never say what they were expecting the hacker to look like, but the six foot blonde knockout clearly was not it. Examples Are Not Arguable, altho I guess props for this one for at least reading the trope description
  • Cyborg (2007): Commented Out ZCE
  • Star Wars – Lothal: Commented out ZCE.
  • Oathkeeper's Awakening: Is proficient at hacking computers.
  • Kung Fu (2021) S1 E1 "Pilot": Althea is one, much to Evan's surprise.
  • * New Dynamic English: Karen, Max's wife, is a computer programmer who worked for the same company Max worked for.
  • Hitman Video Game Allies: During the briefing for the Colorado mission, Diana makes it clear that her hacking skills are nothing to sneeze at ("She is good, but we [the ICA] are better..."). A few of the militia members even note that she had already hacked several corporations by the time she was in college, and the briefing shows her hacking the televisions in Central London. In the Chongqing mission where she guest-stars as your handler, she's quick enough on the draw to get you a quick-and-dirty background-check pass for the ICA Facility on short notice by hacking a specific terminal, something Diana wasn't able to do in a similar situation in Another Life when 47 impersonated a nurse.
  • Digimon Adventure 02 New Digidestined: Of the 02 kids, she's the one with the strongest knowledge of working with computers and other technology. In the Kizuna movie she hacks into the computers of both presumed Big Bad's.
  • Code Lyoko Evolution E 8: Laura manages to make the Virus work on the super computer running Lyoko, which makes the Return to the Past less effective on her. And this was with Jérémie watching her. This is also used as her leverage to be in the gang, as normally the gang vote on such matters, but since she's messed with the Return to the Past, they have no choice but for her to join.
  • Deca-Dence: She's incredibly skilled at hacking, being able to create a bootleg terminal to access Deca-Dence from the Bug Correctional Facility and with incredible knowledge about the machinery and security measures to even the most secure facilities, like Avatar Storage and the Gadoll Production Facility.
  • Red Rising Criminals And Terrorists: She's the hacker in their little band of thieves.
  • The Hidden People: Nissa is a self-proclaimed "hacktivist" and a complete tech wiz able to break past the security of cellphones and police departments alike.
  • JoJo New Universe: Phantom Thief Joker: Probably the only hacker in the world that can match Alibaba, and without a Stand of her own.
  • It Came From Internet: You enlist the help of a hacker girl named Rachel to navigate the web and defeat the Spyder.
  • Law & Order: Organized Crime: A female whiz with a computer.
  • Black Lagoon - People's Liberation Army: A star example of the PLA's cyberwarfare division. Her superior proudly tells her she will pave the way for China's coming online army.
  • Danger Girl: Tends to fulfill this role in levels starring her, by hacking through security systems and unlocking security vaults for her teammates.
  • Jumanji: The Animated Series: Claims to be capable of doing anything with a computer, and instantly figures Ibsen's computer system.
  • Characters/Narbonic: What Dave thinks she is. Technically... Helen works out Lovelace isn't human, because a) she knows Madblood has no henchmen and b) she knows it's already humanly impossible to outhack Dave, as Lovelace did.
  • Servants of the Empire: Merei, especially in the sequel when her parents are tracking her down.
  • The Lunar Chronicles: Commented-out ZCE.
  • Blue Reflection: Apparently can hack her way into anything, but it's mostly used for comedic relief.
