Recap / Xiaolin Showdown The Life And Times Of Hannibal Roy Bean

Go To

To retrieve the Shen Gong Wu stolen by the Ying-Ying Bird, the Wudai Warriors must journey back into the Ying-Yang World, and face Hannibal Roy Bean, the villain who turned Chase Young evil.

Tropes:

  • The Bad Guy Wins: The episode ends with Hannibal Roy Bean escaping from the Yin-Yang World.
  • The Corrupter: Hannibal is revealed to have been this to Chase, convincing him to drink the Lao Mang Lone Soup and join the Heylin side.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Hannibal Bean defeats Omi, Kimiko and Raimundo with little effort. Kimiko scoffs it hardly seems like a fair fight. Hannibal tauntingly agrees with her and considers fighting with his eyes closed.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: That's what the monks think after accidentally releasing Hannibal, however Chase reveals that an apocalypse pales in comparison what that bean will do.
  • Enraged by Idiocy: Hannibal has little patience for Jack’s slow-wittedness.
Hannibal: If you’re true evil, you know what to do.
Jack: Uhh… Can you give me a hint?
[Hannibal pounds against the glass and startles Jack]
Hannibal: [twitching] Just open the cage and let me out you twit!
  • Evil Is Not a Toy:
    • Hannibal swayed Chase to the Heylin side and convinced him to drink Lao Mang Lone Soup, but it backfired when Chase betrayed Hannibal and banished him to the Yin-Yang World.
    • Surprisingly subverted with Jack, who initially appears to have freed Hannibal Bean only to be locked up in the cage (with Kimiko even lampshading that evil villains tend to do that), only for that to turn out to not be the case. Instead, Hannibal is forced to improvise by using the Moby Morpher to disguise himself as Jack and successfully trick the monks into freeing him instead
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: When monks realize too late that the Jack they freed is actually Hannibal in disguise, Omi has this to say.
Omi: So it appears it was not Jack who acted so stupid as to free Hannibal Bean. It was…me?
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: When Chase greets the monks and Jack after they return from the Yin-Yang World, the Ying-Ying bird flies off Chase’s shoulder and onto Clay’s, hinting that the latter is really Hannibal Bean in disguise.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Kimiko and Wuya constantly switch between good and evil courtesy of their yin yang yo-yos during the showdown. Heylin Kimiko has red eyes, while Xiaolin Wuya has a white robe.
  • I Should Have Done This Years Ago: Chase makes such a remark when he attacks Hannibal (disguised as Clay) at the end. While not stated aloud, he clearly means to say he should have killed Hannibal way back when instead of merely imprisoning him.
  • The Man Behind the Curtain: Played with. Hannibal initially appears to be a menacing armored figure, but it turns out that the armor is being piloted by his true body, a small bean-like creature. Jack even lampshades how Hannibal’s true appearance isn’t what he was expecting. That said, Hannibal is far from harmless, and he proves it by effortlessly outmatching the monks in battle and tricking them into helping him escape from the Yin-Yang World.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The monks inadvertently help Hannibal Bean escape the Yin-Yang World. Chase angrily calls them out on it.
  • Once an Episode: Kimiko vs. Wuya in a race to get the Moby Morpher first with meteors bombarding them while wagering the yin yang yo-yos to escape the meteors. Kimiko wins, but Hannibal's bird swoops in to steal it.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Hannibal Bean is dangerous enough to scare Chase of all people, as shown when Hannibal taunts him before fleeing and Chase berates the monks afterward.
  • Smart Ball: At first it seems like Jack stupidly unleashes Hannibal Bean and got thrown in his old cell as payment. But then it turns out that the Jack the monks rescue IS Hannibal and Jack, in a rare moment of intelligence, didn't let him out.
  • Spot the Imposter: When the monks encounter two Jacks, one of which is Hannibal Bean disguised as Jack with the Moby Morpher, Raimundo realizes they can figure out who is the real one by using the Ring of the Nine Dragons to recombine the real Jack with his good counterpart.
  • Underestimating Badassery: The monks, especially Kimiko and Raimundo, foolishly believe that someone as small as Hannibal Bean would pose no real threat to them. Hannibal proves them wrong by tricking them into freeing him from the cage, easily defeating them in battle, and tricking them into helping him escape from the Yin-Yang World.
