Recap / Xiaolin Showdown Bird Of Paradise

Go To

For their first quest as Wudai Warriors, the monks must seek out the fabled Bird of Paradise. However, they must not take any Shen Gong Wu, and their path leads through the Land of Nowhere, ruled by Chase Young.

Tropes:

  • Being Watched: During their quest, Dojo tells the monks he feels they're being watched. Omi agrees with him, and has a feeling who it is: Chase Yong.
  • Blunt Metaphors Trauma: Averted by Omi for once.
Omi: You [Jack] must promise to turn over the leaf! And, to turn a new leaf over!
  • Character Witness: The monks save an old lady from drowning, and she turns out to be the Bird of Paradise.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: After Clay uses his new Wu Dai powers to help the monks escape Chase Young's canyon attack, Omi remarks with awe that he didn't know he had such incredible power. Clay responds he didn't know he had it in him either.
  • End-of-Episode Silliness: Jack interrogating the "Bird of Paradise" (actually Hannibal Bean's parrot)
  • Foreshadowing:
    • The first time Omi asks the leaf where the Bird of Paradise is, it clearly points to the old lady.
    • Master Fung informs the monks that soon they will encounter an evil that can take many forms and is more deceitful than others. They'll meet that being in the next episode.
  • It Was with You All Along: The Bird of Paradise's gift turns out to be the power that lived inside them.
Bird of Paradise: In rescuing me, I've given you the gift of discovering your finest qualities. Courage (for Kimiko), Loyalty (for Omi), Strength (for Clay), and kindness (for Raimundo).
  • Mood Whiplash: The discovery that the old woman was the Bird of Paradise leads into a scene made not only heart-warming by the titular bird being as beautiful on the inside as the outside, but also her loving parting words to the young monks about their redeeming qualities being their greatest gifts. ...but as she flies away, the mood is ruined when it's revealed that for all her grace and elegance, she still hums in an off-key voice similar to her old lady disguise, much to the monks' discomfort.
  • Mordor: Chase Young's country. It has such nice sounding places such as the Canyon of Doom and Agony and Bone-yard.
  • Priceless Paperweight: Dojo's been using the Book Of Dark Omens to level a table.
  • Shrouded in Myth: According to Wuya, the Bird of Paradise had the power to dry the seas, or even split the world in two. She also casually states afterwards it might all just be water-cooler talk.
  • Squick: In-Universe. The monks' reaction to the old lazy squeezing her skin dry.
    • Also, their reaction to Clay "tracking" Jack.
  • Tempting Fate: "Held prisoner by what? A nest of baby birdies?" Cute giant mutant squirrels.
  • Took a Level in Badass: All the monks realize their Wudai power at the end.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: This quality of Raimundo's is especially emphasized this episode. Namely his Chronic Hero Syndrome, when the crazy old singing crackpot asks for help after falling into the river, Rai jumps in immediately.
  • Undying Loyalty: Omi's greatest quality according to the Bird of Paradise.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Jack Spicer. He tries to betray the monks and steal the leaf as he's being rescued by them. However, they've cottoned-on to his Chronic Backstabbing Disorder and forcibly take the leaf back.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: The group gets attacked by giant mutant fire breathing flying squirrels. Omi is terrified.
