Recap / Xenoblade Chronicles One Chapter Eleven

Go To

The 11th chapter of Xenoblade Chronicles 1. Chapter 11 centers around the battle of Galahad Fortress, which resides on the hilt of the Mechonis' sword. The battle consists of the final duel with Metal-Face, who turned out to be Dunban's traitorous friend, Mumkhar, along with a battle against Egil and his Yaldabaoth Gold Face-Mechon to free Fiora's Face-Nemesis from his control.

1) Getting Fiora Back

After Egil forced his Face-Mechon to return with him to Galahad Fortress, Shulk and company regroup on Valak Mountain. Shulk remains distraught after being unable to get through to Fiora only for Reyn to reassure him that they've officially confirmed that Fiora's not dead, and that they will be sure to get her back. Alvis reminds the group that they're coming up on Sword Valley, and that the Mechon fortress their enemy retreated to is just after it, which Shulk is ready to get moving again in order to get Fiora back.

2) The Sword of Mechonis

Thanks to Alvis' guidance, Shulk's group have finally made it to the end of the Bionis' right arm. They arrive at the Bionis' chest area where the Mechonis' large sword has been stabbed into it. Looking upon the mechanical land of Sword Valley that resides on the Mechonis' sword, Shulk notices that said sword appears to have channels within it that are drawing in a green substance from the Bionis. Dunban adding that the channels seem to be directed towards Galahad Fortress. In return, Melia explains a story her father told her of how the Mechonis is known to absorb ether from the Bionis to use said ether as sustenance, which Dunban notes that this means that the Mechon are also beings that feed on ether.

3) Sword Valley

Shulk and company makes their way towards Sword Valley, which is crawling with Mechon patrols. Galahad Fortress can be seen in the distance, which Shulk figures that they're going to be fighting Egil's Gold-Face there. Knowing the danger that this journey will be, Shulk asks the group if anyone wants to turn back. However, they all remain determined to go, which they begin their trek towards Sword Valley.

4) The Supply Convoy

As Shulk's group gets closer to Sword Valley, they come across what looks like a supply convoy made up of Homs and High Entia transport vehicles having set up camp on the Mechonis' sword. Alvis informs the group that he planned it ahead of time to have them stock up on supplies before they take on such a major battle against the Mechon, which the group sees that it's Dickson who's running the convoy. Upon reuniting with Dickson, the latter explains that he stepped up to be the Homs representative after hearing about the army of the Bionis being formed, which he then set out to provide supplies for Shulk's upcoming battle. As a result, Shulk's group looks through Dickson's supplies for new equipment.

5) Meeting Dickson Again

During their stay at the supply convoy, Shulk's group has finished informing Dickson of what they learned so far, such as revealing to him that Fiora's alive within Face-Nemesis, and that Mumkhar's alive as the one who attacked Colony 9 as Metal-Face. Dickson's surprised to hear that the Mechon have been storing Homs within Face-Mechon, which him and Alvis figure that it's about time for the two of them to return to the Bionis in order to help assemble its allied force. Shulk thanks them for all the help, which Dickson suggests for the group to sneak into Galahad Fortress given that it's a key position that will be crawling with Mechon. In return, Dunban suggests sneaking in through one of the nearby ether inlets that leads into the fortress. Dickson and Dunban then head back to Bionis on an aerial transport, which Shulk's group begin their journey across Sword Valley towards Galahad Fortress.

At that same time at Galahad Fortress, Gold-Face is seen, which Egil's currently piloting it. Egil thinks about Zanza the Giant standing atop the Bionis, and Zanza's eventual titan battle with Mechonis. He then thinks over how he's confirmed that there's a new wielder of the Monado (referring to Shulk). However, Egil remains confused as to why Zanza would unshackle the Monado to be able to damage its own people of Bionis rather than just remain focused on the Mechon. He then thinks about how Face-Nemesis went off on its own to meet with Shulk on the Bionis' arm, which Egil takes it as a sign that he doesn't have full control over the Face-Mechon, and that they're now useless since the unshackled Monado is no longer held back by refusing to damage the Homs stored within the Face-Mechon. Despite that, Face-Nemesis' meeting with Shulk gives Egil the idea to challenge the boy under the belief that there's still a few things he could learn.

6) Infiltrating the Fortress

Rather than bursting through the front gate of Galahad Fortress, Shulk's group looks for another way in. They spot an unguarded small ether inlet side-entrance in the distance, which Shulk and company begin their trek towards it.

7) Mumkhar Bars the Way

Making their way towards the ether inlet side-entrance of Galahad Fortress, Shulk and company arrive at a Heavy Machine Depot that resides before it. They find Mumkhar without Metal-Face waiting for their arrival at a catwalk platform that resides above the endless sea, which Dunban once more calls him out for betraying their kind. However, Mumkhar ignores it, and just remains determined to finally take out the Monado's current wielder. Mumkhar then calls in his squad of Face-Mechon all wielding the same anti-ether spears that took out Zanza's giant body, which he taunts Shulk and company asking if they can kill said Face-Mechon given that they must know at this point that they all have trapped Homs stored within them.

Mumkhar then finally gets back into Metal-Face, his claw covered in the same anti-ether green liquid, which the battle begins. During the battle, Shulk advises the group to avoid being struck by the Mechon weapons that appear to be doused in the green liquid that took out Zanza. In return, Mumkhar states that Shulk's worry is correct. That they've developed weapons that don't just decompose Homs, but all living beings on Bionis. Mumkhar explains the gist of it that the ether blood that the Mechonis' sword has been sucking out of Bionis has been turned into the green decomposing liquid to use against its own kind, which the battle then resumes.

8) A Madman Breathes His Last

Shulk and company's battle with Mumkhar eventually reaches a point where the Face-Mechon squad is disposed of, and Metal-Face has become heavily damaged due to the power of the unshackled Monado. Dunban taunts that this is the power that Mumkhar always wanted as he goes for the sword kill upon his former comrade. However, Shulk gets in the way to block Dunban from landing the killing blow. Dunban and Shulk lock swords, which despite all the horrible things that Mumkhar has done, Shulk doesn't want to see Dunban become a Homs murderer. Dunban counters that Mumkhar's someone who deserves death, which Shulk brings up that this logic just means that Fiora having been piloting a Face-Mechon would have to die as well, which catches Dunban's attention.

Shulk explains that after learning how the Face-Mechon have Homs stored within them, he's set for himself a new goal. That rather than needing to destroy all the Mechon, he needs to find out why this is all happening, such as what it is that's causing the Bionis and Mechonis to continue its never-ending fight. Dunban accepts Shulk's goal, and pulls back his sword despite Mumkhar's continued attempts to taunt them into fighting. Dunban then tells Shulk that he won't forgive Mumkhar for what the latter did, but admits that Shulk's words are the truth, and that their primary focus at the moment should just be to help Fiora. He then tells Mumkhar that they don't have the time to waste on him, which angers Mumkhar, and causes Shulk to see a Monado vision. Shulk sees the damaged Metal-Face being impaled by a fallen spire of Galahad Fortress that was damaged during the battle, but before he could make sense of it, the scene already starts to play out in real life.

Shulk tries to warn Mumkhar of the danger, but the latter ignores it, and charges at them. Sure enough, the vision plays out where the broken spire falls off Galahad Fortress, and stabs down upon Metal-Face, which pins the latter to the Heavy Machine Depot's catwalk platform. Due to the platform being damaged from the battle, it breaks off from the Mechonis' sword, which Shulk and company manage to get off it in time. The platform with Metal-Face trapped on it then drops down to the endless sea; resulting in Mumkhar's death. Dunban is last seen calling Mumkhar a fool as Shulk's group move on towards Galahad Fortress.

Back at the Bionis, Alvis is seen with Lorithia studying the spear that destroyed Zanza's giant body within her lab. Lorithia is left unimpressed by Shulk's visions given that he failed to save Emperor Sorean, but Alvis assures her that Shulk is not at fault as Sorean's death was something already decided by fate. Lorithia then goes over what she discovered to Alvis about the green fluid within the spear, which is basically the same information that was told to Shulk's group about it being the Bionis' blood that's been tweaked to kill its own living creatures. Knowing that it's due to the Mechonis' sword sucking up the Bionis' ether, Alvis asks if there's any countermeasures, which Lorithia mentions that the antibodies will eventually be ready. However, she remains annoyed as to why "he's" included in the plan with their boss, which Alvis reminds her that they must respect their elders as Dickson (the he Lorithia's referring to) has known their boss for far longer than them.

Meanwhile, Shulk's group continues to make their way towards the ether inlet. Their goal being to find Fiora. It's at this point that Shulk has another Monado vision where he sees Face-Nemesis facing off against them within Galahad Fortress, and said Face-Mechon's eventual fall off the fortress and down to the endless sea. The vision shocks Shulk knowing that this means that Fiora potentially falls to her death, which he's unable to hide from his companions that he saw something. Not wanting them to worry, he provides some of the vision's information that he saw Face-Nemesis within Galahad Fortress, which they remain satisfied and continue on. Shulk remaining determined that he has to save Fiora from what happens in the vision.

9) The Fortress' Rear Entrance

Shulk's group finally arrives at the ether inlet side-entrance that they saw earlier, which they go through it to sneak into Galahad Fortress.

10) In Galahad Fortress

Upon entering Galahad Fortress, Shulk reminds the group that Fiora's somewhere within it. Given that Reyn's also Fiora's friend, he remains hyped up to fight the Mechon.

11) Severing the Ether Supply

Fighting their way through Galahad Fortress, Shulk and company eventually arrive at the fortress' Main Control Room for the nearby ether blast furnace that's been providing the Mechon the Bionis' ether energy. Seeing the two large working pistons within the ether blast furnace, Shulk theorizes that they will be able to shut the furnace down if they can stop said pistons from moving. Shulk then figures that they just need to shut down the turbines working the pistons. As a result, the group heads off to search for the turbines.

12) A Successful Plan

After the turbines are shut down, Shulk's group returns to Galahad Fortress' Main Control Room where they see that the pistons have stopped working. Dunban figures that their efforts will help the Bionis alliance force as it means that the Mechon won't be able to mass any large Mechon squads, which the gate to the blast furnace then opens up due to shutting the furnace down unlocking the door. Believing that Fiora might be there, the group heads into the blast furnace.

13) Face-Nemesis Attacks

Making their way through the blast furnace, Shulk's group arrives at a Face Maintenance Bay where many Mass-Produced Face-Mechon with the green anti-ether spears are seen in storage. The alarm then goes off due to their intrusion. The nearby doors open, which a squad of Mechon led by Face-Nemesis enter the maintenance bay and attack Shulk's group.

14) Controlled Machines

Shulk's group fights Face-Nemesis and the Mechon supporting her, which they try to call out to Fiora to get her to remember them. However, they get no answer, which Shulk and company attempt to retreat to not have to kill Fiora. Face-Nemesis ends up chasing after them, and destroys a bridge that they were crossing. This results in Shulk's group falling to a lower location of Galahad Fortress. It's here on the lowest platform of the fortress that Shulk's group encounters Egil within his Gold Face-Mechon.

Before starting the battle, Egil activates the Apocrypha Generator, an object within the interior of the Mechonis. The body of the Mechonis glows due to the Apocrypha Generator's activation, which it's power shoots out into the world and overtakes Galahad Fortress. To the surprise of Shulk and company, the Monado forcibly deactivates and stops working. Thus, showing that Egil's invented a counter to the Monado with the Apocrypha Generator to cause disruption to said sword's power.

Face-Nemesis and other Mechon then arrive on the spot to resume their attack on Shulk's group, which Dunban calls out his sister within Face-Nemesis by scolding her for hurting her friends. The result is Face-Nemesis struggling to move as if its having a fight with itself. Face-Nemesis manages to open up its cockpit, which Meyneth controlling Fiora manages to inform Shulk and company that Face-Nemesis is no longer under her control. Shulk's group gets the gist that Egil must be controlling Face-Nemesis as its cockpit forcibly closes.

Standing before Shulk's group in his Gold-Mechon, Egil doesn't deny that he has control over all Mechon the moment they're created. Shulk questions why Egil's forcing Homs to attack their Bionis home as Face-Mechon, but Egil refuses to answer unless they submit to him. Dunban suggests for the group to retreat, but Shulk refuses to go when they're so close to saving Fiora. Thus, Shulk and company are left with two choices: to submit to Egil, or attempt to fight him despite the Monado now being deactivated. Shulk makes the choice to fight due to the oddity that Egil's still after the Monado's power despite being capable of countering it, which results in Egil's Gold-Mechon charging at them to begin the fight. Despite Meyneth's defiance, the controlled Face-Nemesis is also forced to fight Shulk's group.

15) Fiora's Request

On the lowest platform of Galahad Fortress, the battle goes down between Shulk's group and Egil. Shulk and company not only have to fight Egil and his Mechon minions, but also the Egil-controlled Face-Nemesis. As the battle goes on however, things are looking bleak for Shulk's group due to the Mechonis' Apocrypha Generator keeping the Monado deactivated.

Lady Meyneth is forced to watch the battle unfold from within the controlled Face-Nemesis, but she suddenly starts to hear a girl's force calling out to her from within the Homs body she's borrowing. The voice being from the real Fiora, who begs Meyneth to help Shulk and her friends. Asking Fiora to lend her her strength, Lady Meyneth manages to retake control of Face-Nemesis, which she's able to block Egil's strike from finishing Shulk and company off. The result is a duel between Face-Nemesis and Egil's Gold Face-Mechon. Meyneth also releases some of her power to counter the Apocrypha Generator, which brings back some of the Monado's power, much to Egil's confusion as to what's going on.

With his Monado power partially restored, Shulk once more sees the vision of Face-Nemesis falling off Galahad Fortress. Meyneth duels against Egil's Gold Face-Mechon, which the battle damages Galahad Fortress to the point of it being on the verge of destruction. Egil within his Gold Face-Mechon manage to escape, but Face-Nemesis collapses due to the damage it took from the duel. As Shulk's companions take for cover, Shulk attempts to approach the fallen Face-Nemesis on the collapsing fortress platform in order to finally save Fiora. However, the Monado vision plays out in real life where Face-Nemesis falls off the platform, which causes Shulk to jump after her. Thus, resulting in them both falling down to the endless sea.

As Egil's seen flying back to the Mechonis in his Gold Face-Mechon, he watches Galahad Fortress explode, and thinks over the recent battle. Having witnessed a strange power from Face-Nemesis that countered the Apocrypha Generator, Egil starts to get the sense that the Mechonis' Lady Meyneth must be awake.

Meanwhile within Alcamoth's Audience Chamber, Kallian, Dickson and Alvis eventually get word from an imperial soldier about the destruction of Galahad Fortress. Kallian remains worried about Shulk's group, but Dickson figures they're okay as he's got a good idea of where Shulk's group ended up following the fortress' destruction. Dickson then advises that the time to attack the Mechonis is now while the Mechon are in a weakened position, which Kallian appears to be in agreement.

    1) Getting Fiora Back
Following the retreat of Egil's Mechon taking Face-Nemesis back to Mechonis, Shulk remains disheartened having missed the chance to save Fiora again. Reyn's the one to step forward ordering Shulk to get it together as they don't have the time to hang around their current location, and that he agrees that while he doesn't know what happened to Fiora, it's clear that the girl they saw was Fiora. Thus, Reyn tries to reassure Shulk that this is proof that Fiora's not dead, and that they will surely get her back.

Hearing Reyn's words to "get her back," Shulk's confidence returns, and agrees with Reyn that they've come too far to give up now. Reyn figures that the goal now is obviously to go to Mechonis and find Fiora, which Alvis points them in a direction of the snowy mountains that Sword Valley lies just beyond. That the Mechon flew in the direction of Galahad Fortress, and that Fiora may be there. Alvis asks Shulk if the latter is set to go on, which Shulk answers he is, and that they will get Fiora back.

    2) The Sword of the Mechonis
Shulk's group guided by Alvis makes their way off the Bionis' arm onto the spot where the Bionis' chest has been stabbed into by the Mechonis' large sword. The connecting large sword making a walkable path as if it's a bridge that leads them to the Mechonis. Reyn, Riki, Dunban, and Sharla are all left surprised and amazed by how huge the Mechonis' sword is, and Shulk notes that something about it all comes off feeling unnatural. Melia asks what he means by that, which Shulk points them in the direction of a flowing green light that he can see all throughout the Mechonis' sword.

Shulk theorizes that the way it's glowing, the only thing it could be is ether, and that the ether's flowing as if it's being drawn in by something. Dunban goes along with it adding that the ether appears to be drawing towards Galahad Fortress, which is just up ahead. Melia also adds how her father once told her that the Mechonis is known to absorb ether from the Bionis, and uses it for sustenance. Hearing that the Mechonis feeds on ether, Dunban pieces it together that it's not just the living creatures of Bionis that relies on ether, but that the Mechon use ether as an energy source as well.

    3) Sword Valley
Making their way along the Mechonis' sword bridge, Shulk's group and Alvis arrive at Sword Valley where many Mechon are seen patrolling the paths leading up to Galahad Fortress. They spot said fortress in the distance, which Melia's left amazed by how big it looks. Dunban explains how Galahad Fortress is known to be the front line base of the Mechon, and that it only makes sense that the Mechon that have been attacking the Bionis all come from there.

Shulk takes this as a sign of it being a high probability that the gold Face-Mechon that took away Fiora will be there. Turning to his companions, Shulk warns everyone that they're about to enter the Mechon's stronghold. Thus, he wouldn't be surprised if there's anyone who would rather turn back. However, Riki and Dunban speak for everyone that they are all prepared to take on the Mechon stronghold, which Shulk accepts, and they continue on.

    4) The Suppy Convoy
Making their way closer to Galahad Fortress, Shulk's group and Alvis come across some noteworthy parked High Entia vehicles as if they were waiting for someone, which Alvis informs them that it's a supply convoy. Alvis warns everyone of how unwise it would be to proceed without restocking on supplies. In return, Shulk catches on that the supply convoy was planned by Alvis beforehand, which Alvis nods to be the case. Reyn then catches sight of someone he recognizes at the supply convoy, which it turns out to be Dickson waiting for them. Shulk and company approach the supply convoy to reunite with Dickson, who states that he heard the rumors of how Shulk's group took care of Metal-Face.

Dunban asks Dickson why he's here, which Dickson answers that he came across the allied force of the Bionis that's being gathered up, and that along with stepping up to be the representative of the Homs, he heard of how Shulk's group was heading for Galahad Fortress. Thus, he decided to stop by and say hello. Hence, why he's here now. Dickson informs Shulk and company that he's got a whole stack of new equipment in his supply convoy for them to use, which Reyn gets hyped up for some new gear. However, Dickson reminds everyone that they must purchase the new equipment, which Dunban calls him cheap.

    5) Meeting Dickson Again
Taking a break at the supply convoy, Shulk and company tell the story of what they've been through so far to Dickson, who's left surprised to hear that Fiora's alive. Dickson starts to catch on that the reason Shulk and company come off so dreary at the moment is due to what they found out about Fiora, and also can't believe the revelation that the Mechon weren't eating them, but were actually capturing Homs to stick them into Face-Mechon. Dunban also mentions how their old comrade, Mumkhar, was made a Face-Mechon, and that it was he who led the Mechon attack on Colony 9, which Dickson doesn't find surprising despite having always believed that Mumkhar snuffed it during the "Battle of Sword Valley."

Dunban asks how Dickson isn't surprised by this, which Dickson explains that he's not surprised Mumkhar, now a Mechon, would attack Colony 9 as it's a mystery regarding what drives the Mechon, and that he gave up trying to figure it out. However, Dickson states that things have become more interesting having learned that Mumkhar ended up switching sides to the Mechon. Shulk asks what he means by that, but Dickson states that it's nothing. Alvis then speaks to inform everyone that it's time for their journey to continue. However, Alvis states that his own journey with them must end here as he will be required to help the Homs assemble for the allied force. That he still has his duties as the High Entia Seer to consider.

Dunban adds that he will be heading back as well getting everyone ready for battle, but he gives Shulk and company some last minute reassurance that they will be fine getting Fiora back. In return, Shulk thanks them for coming this far, and assures Alvis and Dickson that they will be able to handle themselves. Before heading off, Dickson warns Shulk and company that due to Galahad Fortress being a key position for the Mechon, they can't just rush in guns-a-blazing, which Dunban agrees with. Dunban explains his idea to infiltrate into Galahad Fortress by sneaking through the ether inlets. That if it really is true that the Mechon feed off ether, then they should be able to find an influx channel that will allow them to sneak into Galahad Fortress. Dickson nods in agreement at the idea, and orders Shulk not to die on him, which Shulk replies that he won't.

Shulk bids Dickson farewell asking the latter to take care as well, which Dickson and Alvis fly off back to the Bionis using the supply convoy vehicles. Following Dickson and Alvis' departure, Dunban brings the focus back to their journey, which is to head for Galahad Fortress that resides at the hilt of the Mechonis' sword. Shulk and company resume their journey along the sword as Dunban thinks back on his own words of how the day will come that they will seize their destiny. He's left wondering if Shulk's doing the same.

Over on the Mechonis, Egil resides within his gold Face-Mechon, and is seen thinking about a certain memory. He sees the giant, Zanza, on his own standing atop the Bionis, and the sight of the Bionis and Mechonis standing opposite one another before engaging in their titanic battle. Along with Zanza being the weapon forger, Egil notes how they've now come across another (Shulk) that has the ability to wield the Monado. However, Egil remains confused as to why Zanza ended up choosing to release the Monado so that it doesn't just hurt the Mechon, but the living beings of the Bionis as well, which has turned the Monado into a double-edged sword.

Egil also notes how odd it is that Zanza released the Monado for just a mere child wielder. Thinking back to seeing Face-Nemesis standing before the Monado boy, Egil also takes note of how this is the first time that a Face-Mechon has escaped his control and acted alone. Egil also realizes that now that Zanza's released the Monado, the Face-Mechon are no longer shielded by the living Homs stored within it. Thus, he deems that the usefulness of the Face-Mechon has come to an end. However, Egil isn't convinced to bail on the Face-Mechon just yet as he believes that there's still things that can be learnt by having the Face-Mechon challenge the Monado boy.

    6) Infiltrating the Fortress
At that same time, Shulk's group is seen investigating the ether inlets around Galahad Fortress, which Reyn is the one who spots what looks to be a tiny entrance residing next to one of the ether rivers flowing into said fortress. Dunban notes how the entrance appears to be unguarded. Thus, making for a decent entry point to get closer to the fortress. Shulk remains confident that this is their chance to infiltrate, but Dunban warns him to remain on guard as the Mechon could just be in hiding, which Shulk accepts.

    7) Mumkhar Bars the Way
Shulk's group enter the small entrance to reach a platform right outside Galahad Fortress, but it's here that they're met by Mumkhar, who's itching for another battle. Mumkhar calls the actions of Shulk and company predictable stating how obvious it was that Shulk's group would be aiming for Galahad Fortress. Dunban once more desires to know why Mumkhar would go against his own kind, but Mumkhar remains uninterested, and states that as a part of the Mechon, he's just having the time of his life, and that it even comes with the benefit of taking out the wielder of the Monado.

As Mumkhar stands ready for a fight, Reyn steps forward and yells back that the former won't be able to take them all on himself. However, Mumkhar just taunts back that he's not that stupid, which Shulk and company all get surrounded by the mass produced Face-Mechon. Mumkhar then steps back into Metal-Face, and asks Shulk if the latter will be capable of killing them all. The mass produced Face-Mechon prepare for battle as well, which Mumkhar taunts that the Homs within them could be anyone. Even taunting that it could be mom or dad, or the special someone (Fiora) that they care about. It's at this point that Shulk's blue-eyed vision kicks in, which he sees Sharla being the first to be struck and killed by Metal-Face. Shulk charges in to block Metal-Face's attack from hitting Sharla, which Shulk realizes that something is different. He notices how odd the green glowing weapons used by the Face-Mechon are that look like they're utilizing the ether they've been collecting, and warns everyone to be careful of their green weapon spears, and Metal-Face's green claws.

Metal-Face congratulates Shulk for catching on quick that their current Mechon weapons have been made special. He taunts that their new weapons have been made to decompose not just Homs, but any living being from Bionis. Dunban questions how such a thing is possible, which Metal-Face answers that while he doesn't know the technical stuff, it has something to do with ether. Metal-Face explains of how ether is basically the Bionis' blood, and that Galahad Fortress has been sucking it out and turning the ether into a green liquid for the Mechon to use. Shulk's unable to believe what he's hearing, which Metal-Face just laughs at how clever it all is. Metal-Face then states to Dunban that the world of the Mechon suits him just fine. In return, Dunban remains confident to make Mumkhar pay only for Metal-Face to start getting impatient, and is ready once more to continue the fight.

    8) A Madman Breathes His Last
Shulk and company battle it out with Metal-Face and the mass produced Face-Mechon, and manage to weaken Metal-Face to the point of being on the verge of defeat. Struggling to control the damaged Metal-Face, Mumkhar complains that the power of the Monado is too much. Dunban taunts Mumkhar that this is the power of the Monado that Mumkhar has always wanted, and aims to land the finishing blow, but Mumkhar refuses to back down claiming that he's more powerful than all of them, and that they will be the ones who are finished. Dunban's about to land the final sword stab on the exposed Mumkhar, but Shulk gets between them and blocks Dunban's sword with the Monado; not wanting the latter to become a murderer. Dunban orders Shulk to get out of the way, but Shulk continues to block while trying to reason with Dunban that Mumkhar is not one of the Mechon. In return, Dunban reminds Shulk of all the horrible things that Mumkhar's done, and asks where Shulk's killer instinct is at.

Still holding off Dunban, Shulk explains that he does indeed hate Mumkhar for what he did to Fiora and Emperor Sorean. That it's a given that he wants revenge. However, Shulk notes the problem that Face-Mechon aren't like the others. That they're also people. Shulk asks if Dunban's really willing to kill another Homs, but Dunban answers yes as it sometimes must be done. Shulk then asks if Dunban would think the same if the Homs opposing them was Fiora. The question leaves Dunban unable to answer, which Shulk explains that his goal when they set out was to destroy all of the Mechon. However, he's come to realize that that's no longer possible now that he knows that the Face-Mechon have living Homs stored within them. Thus, Shulk states that instead of destroying the Mechon, it's now more important for him to find out why the Homs are needed to make Face-Mechon, what the reason is for why all this is happening, and why the Bionis and Mechonis have to keep fighting.

Having listened to Shulk's words, Dunban catches on that Shulk's fight is no longer about destroying the Mechon, but has become a mission to find out why all this is happening, which Shulk nods to be the case. Dunban finally backs away from finishing off Mumkhar, but Mumkhar finds such actions pathetic, and attempts to strike them with Metal-Face while their guard is down. In return, Dunban strikes Metal-Face once more to deactivate the Face-Mechon for good, which the weight of Metal-Face falling to the floor causes one of supports of the platform they're all standing on start to break. Shulk calls out to Dunban over his action just now, which Dunban makes it clear that he will never forgive Mumkhar for what he did. However, Dunban admits that Shulk's words just now are true and full of weight. Thus, their main goal before anything else should be to go help Fiora. Glad to see that he got through to Dunban, Shulk turns to Metal-Face, and yells at Mumkhar that they don't have the time anymore to play around with him.

Trying to get his devastated Metal-Face up, Mumkhar complains of how Shulk always has to have the last word. This results in Shulk having a blue-eyed vision where he sees Metal-Face yelling at him to just die, and charges at Shulk only for a piece of rubble damaged by the current battle to fall upon Metal-Face, which possibly kills him. Following the vision, Shulk tries to warn Mumkhar not to move. However, Metal-Face proceeds to yell at him to just die, and charges forward at him just like in the vision. Metal-Face launches a ranged energy blast at Shulk and Dunban, which Shulk pushes Dunban out of the way to save them both. The missed energy blast then strikes the wall of Galahad Fortress, which breaks off the piece of rubble high up, and strikes down upon Metal-Face. The weight of the rubble falling upon the already damaged platform caues it to break, which results in the platform Mumkhar is on falling to endless sea below. Mumkhar is unable to believe that this is how he's going out as he disappears into the endless sea; finally bringing an end to both Metal-Face and Mumkhar.

From the Mechonis' sword bridge, Shulk and company look down at the endless sea at the location where Mumkhar died. Dunban gives Mumkhar some parting words as a fool who went too far. At that same time back on the Bionis, Lorithia is seen in her Alcamoth lab. She stands before the large spear that now houses Zanza's soul stored within the lab, which Alvis then enters the room. Lorithia points out that the future visions are proving to be of little use, which Alvis realizes that she's referring to how Shulk failed to save the life of His Majesty despite the fact that they saw Emperor Sorean's death coming. Alvis assures her that such a failure was still within the margin of fate; meaning that it wasn't Shulk's fault. Lorithia questions if this means that Alvis is siding with the boy, but Alvis shakes his head no, and then asks if Lorithia found out anything about the spear currently housing Zanza's soul.

Lorithia answers that she did after researching the spear's green liquid that was the cause of Zanza's giant body being destroyed. That the green liquid has the ability to alter and destroy the structure of ether; the very building block of all life on the Bionis. In addition, she discovered that the green liquid was created from ether energy that was drawn from the blood of the Bionis itself. Alvis asks if this explains the ether that he and Shulk's group witnessed flowing through Sword Valley, which Lorithia answers that there's probably more to it, but it's still too early to draw any real conclusions. Alvis then asks if there's any countermeasure. In return, Lorithia assures him that they will be ready as creating antibodies is a simple matter, which Alvis finds to be good news. Changing the topic, Lorithia asks why "he" (referring to Dickson) has to be included in all this given how much she disgusts him. In return, Alvis states that they must be respectful of their elders, especially when Dickson has known "him" (referring to Zanza) far longer than they do.

Back at where a platform used to be outside Galahad Fortress, Shulk and his companions are seen regrouping following the final battle against Mumkhar's Metal-Face. Reyn states that they should now move to get inside the fortress, which Shulk agrees with believing that Fiora and Egil's gold Face-Mechon will be in there. As they start making their way towards Galahad Fortress, Shulk ends up having another blue-eyed vision. He sees what looks like a battle between his group and Mechon led by Face-Nemesis, which the battle is apparently going to end with Face-Nemesis falling down to the endless sea. After the vision, Shulk calls out to Fiora having just seen her fall to her death, which his companions notice right away that Shulk must have saw something. Shulk tries to deny it, but due to how unconvincing he is, he has no choice but to tell them that he definitely saw Fiora's Face-Nemesis within Galahad Fortress. Dunban sees this as good news that they now know, at the very least, what to expect. Shulk then thinks to himself that he will save Fiora, and not let the vision come true.

    9) The Fortress' Rear Entrance
Shulk and company manage to locate Galahad Fortress' back entrance. They all reassure themselves that there's no going back at this point, which Shulk then gives the order to continue on, and they enter into Galahad Fortress.

    10) In Galahad Fortress
Shulk's group fights their way through Galahad Fortress. Reyn remains hyped to defeat the Mechon in order to get Fiora back, which they continue on.

    11) Severing the Ether Supply
Treking deeper into Galahad Fortress, Shulk and company eventually makes it to the control room for the ether blast furnace. They notice the furnace's pipelines, and the working piston, that have been supplying the Mechon with the Bionis' ether energy. Thus, Shulk theorizes that they can shut down the blast furnace if they find a way to stop its piston from working.

Sharla agrees with it knowing that sabotaging the blast furnace would cut the Mechon off from ether energy, but Reyn questions how they're supposed to stop such a massive piston. In return, Shulk figures that shutting off the turbines will stall the piston, which said turbines should be nearby. Dunban agrees with the idea as they head off to searching around Galahad Fortress for the turbines.

    12) A Successful Plan
Shulk and his companions locate and shut down the turbines, which stalls the blast furnace's piston, much to everyone's excitement that they've sabotaged the Mechon from its source of ether energy. Dunban figures that the sabotage will prevent that Mechon from mobilizing any large squads for the time being, and hopes that it improves the chances of Bionis' allied force, much to Melia's worry given that her brother is the allied force's leader. The sabotage also causes the locked doors to the main area of the blast furnace to unlock, which Shulk gives the order to move on; hoping that the furnace is where Fiora is at.

    13) Face-Nemesis Attacks
Making their way into the blast furnace, Shulk and company come across a bunch of inactive Mechon in storage that are wielding the Bionis-killing ether spears. The alarm then goes off due to their intrusion. Before Shulk's group could escape, other doors into the blast furnace open up to reveal active Mechon and Face-Nemesis ready for a fight.

    14) Controlled Machines
During the fight, Shulk and company try to call out to Face-Nemesis due to not wanting to fight Fiora, but for whatever reason, she remains silent. Shulk begs her to remember, which Dunban figures that something's amiss, and orders everyone to retreat. Despite Shulk second-guessing given his desire to save Fiora, he follows along as he and his companions retreat out of the blast furnace. However, Face-Nemesis chases after them, and destroys a bridge that they were currently crossing that causes Shulk and company to fall into a lower area of Galahad Fortress. After seeing that no one's injured from the fall, Reyn asks Shulk what the new plan is. However, Shulk calls out to Face-Nemesis again begging her once more to remember them. Having been watching them, it's at this point that Egil is heard stating that he pities Shulk. That without the power of the Monado, he doubts that the boy and his friends would have made it this far.

Shulk and company remain on-guard looking around for where Egil's voice is coming from only for Egil's gold Face-Mechon to come flying in from above. Egil orders for "Apocrypha" to activate, which an object known as the Apocrypha Generator within Egil's gold Face-Mechon gives off a massive glow that causes everyone's weapons, even the Monado, to shut down. Shulk remains confused as to what's going on as Face-Nemesis and her Mechon minions catch up to the location of Shulk's group, and begin their attack. Unable to properly fight back, and as Face-Nemesis and the Mechon close in around them, Dunban steps forward to try to call out to his sister, and scolds Fiora for daring to attack Shulk when the whole reason he's come here is to save her. Face-Nemesis remains struggling in place as if its going through an inner turmoil as Dunban once more calls out for Fiora. In return, Face-Nemesis takes a closer look upon Shulk and company, and finally speaks by begging them all to run.

Face-Nemesis opens up its chest to reveal Fiora who appears to be struggling in the cockpit. Shulk knows that it's probably Lady Meyneth still in control, which she once more begs them to run. That her Face-Nemesis Mechon is currently not under her control. Shulk asks if Egil's the one controlling Face-Nemesis, but before she could try to explain, the cockpit closes shut again. Egil states how surprising it is having never expected one to put up such resistance to becoming a Face-Mechon as he moves his gold Face-Mechon to stand alongside Face-Nemesis as if he's ready to join the battle. Enraged, Shulk orders for Egil to explain what he did to Fiora, which Egil answers that all Mechon are under his control from the moment they're created. That if a passenger defies him, he has the ability to force them to obey. Shulk then asks why Egil's been turning Homs into Mechon, and making them attack Bionis. However, Egil refuses to provide such an answer unless Shulk and company submit to him, and that all will become clear once they attack Bionis with bodies born from the Mechonis.

Shulk instantly refuses asking why anyone would ever submit to Egil, but Dunban asks Shulk to forget about it as they've reached a point where they must retreat. Shulk remains unconvinced due to the danger Fiora's in, which Dunban states that she will be lost forever if they end up dying here. Shulk remains unable to move only for Egil to order the boy to choose. Egil reminds the Monado boy that he's already rendered the Monado useless, and that there's now no hope of victory or escape for them. Reyn gets pissed hearing that Egil really was behind the Monado's deactivation. In return, Egil explains of how the Monado is a tool that regulates the waves of the very ether that makes up their world. Thus, the simple countermeasure against the Monado was to just release opposing waves. Shulk remains confused as to how such a thing is possible, but Egil's done answering questions at this point, and orders Shulk to hand the Monado over; claiming that it's no longer of use to him.

Remaining defiant, Shulk refuses to hand over the Monado as he calls out how odd it is that Egil wants the Monado for himself despite claiming that it's now powerless. Shulk makes his decision clear to Egil that he will never hand over the Monado, which the gold Face-Mechon prepares for battle in front of Shulk's group while Face-Nemesis approaches them from behind. Egil asks them to choose: either be crushed by him, or slain by their old friend. Forcing Lady Meyneth to move the Face-Nemesis despite her continuing struggle for control, Egil charges his gold Face-Mechon and Face-Nemesis towards Shulk's group, and battles it out with them.

    15) Fiora's Request
The battle reaches a point where Shulk and his companions are completely surrounded by the Mechon, much to Lady Meyneth's worry that this could be the end for the Monado boy. It's at this point that Lady Meyneth hears the soul of Fiora calling out to her. Fiora begging Lady Meyneth help Shulk and his companions. he confused Lady Meyneth asks who it is that's speaking to her, but it's at this point that Egil's gold Face-Mechon is seen powering up an ether blast in its hand aiming to finish off the Heir of the Monado. Lady Meyneth begs the one talking to her, Fiora, to lend her her strength, which she manages to control Face-Nemesis into charging into Egil's gold Face-Mechon, and pushes it away from Shulk's group.

As he's being charged away, Egil gets angry at Face-Nemesis' defiance, and proceeds to engage in battle with Face-Nemesis. Egil's gold Face-Mechon manages to get the upper hand and knocks Face-Nemesis into the wall, which causes Lady Meyneth to think about Egil's past self. She states to Egil that she will not permit him to have his way no matter how much he desires revenge, which Lady Meyneth releases a red aura-like power off Face-Nemesis. The Monado reactivates due to said power, much to Egil's confusion as to how this is possible. With the Monado restored, Shulk ends up having one of his blue-eyed visions where he sees Galahad Fortress breaking apart, and Face-Nemesis, once more, falling down towards the endless sea.

Following the vision, Shulk calls out to Face-Nemesis begging her to stop, but she charges once more at Egil's gold Face-Mechon. Lady Meyneth asks for Shulk and company to survive as Egil can't believe what he's seeing; questioning if she's really aiming to die for them. Face-Nemesis then collides with the gold Face-Mechon, and Lady Meyneth's triangular object that was placed on Fiora gives off a massive red glow, which Egil remains unable to understand what's happening. As Face-Nemesis and the gold Face-Mechon remain locked in combat, Galahad Fortress starts to fall apart due to the ongoing battle just like in the vision. Shulk calls out to Fiora in worry as the low area fortress platform they're standing on starts to break off and tilt. Knowing they don't have long before they fall, Dunban orders everyone to escape. However, the explosions are too much as they're forced to take cover.

Shulk's companions take cover by a pillar only for Reyn and company to realize that Shulk's not with them. On the other side of the now tilting platform, they spot Shulk slowly making his way towards the now deactivated Face-Nemesis, who's on the verge of falling off the platform. Shulk attempts to reach out to Face-Nemesis in an attempt to save Fiora only for the platform edge to break off, which results in the vision playing out where Face-Nemesis starts falling towards the endless sea. Refusing to let the vision happen, Shulk jumps off the Galahad Fortress platform and falls towards Face-Nemesis, much to the shock of his watching companions. Galahad Fortress continues to fall apart as Egil within his gold Face-Mechon is seen making his escape by flying away. The gold Face-Mechon then looks back to the exploding fortress, which Egil thinks back to the odd red power that Face-Nemesis was giving off. Egil gets an idea as to who's actually behind Face-Nemesis (Lady Meyneth), and remains shocked as to how such a case is even possible.

Back at Alcamoth, Kallian's seen within the Audience Chamber receiving word from one of his imperial guards of the collapse of Galahad Fortress, which shocks him. Given his worry, he asks about the status of Shulk and Melia, but the guard informs him that their long-range intelligence is only able to see from afar that the fortress is no more. Kallian doesn't like what he's hearing, but he's assured by someone else in the room that he doesn't have to worry. This person turning out to be Dickson. Despite Kallian's continued worry, Dickson assures the prince to take it easy. That Dickson has a pretty good idea as to where Shulk's group went. Dickson then warns Kallian that Galahad Fortress isn't completely destroyed, which he advises Kallian that there's no better time for them to attack than now.

Dickson asks if Kallian's really just planning to just wait here and die, but Kallian remains silent. Having been watching Kallian and Dickson's conversation from the side, Alvis asks if he should perform the divination ritual to see what's in store for their future battle. However, Kallian refuses; stating that from now on, he desires for his people to seize their own destiny by their own hands. Dickson's in agreement adding that there's no need to see the future when they already know that the Mechon forces are on their way. Seeing Kallian remain confident, Dickson praises the prince for having a good look in his eyes. Thus, Dickson makes the announcement that it's time for war.
