Episode 66: Resurrectionists

Takes place 16-29 September 2011.

Short version

Paul tries using Lazarus Pits to revive the people Jade assassinated, but stops after Satanus demonstrates the ability to hijack the connection to damned souls and open Hell Gates.

Longer version

After Jade expresses regret over her previous career as an assassin, Paul offers to do something about it — namely, try bringing back her victims using Lazarus pits, with the side benefit of being able to properly study what the Pits do. Jade is dubious about whether that will help.

Paul then tells her about his comic meta-knowledge, and introduces her to Alan. While visiting him, they are attacked by Grundymen under the control of a Puritan magician from Witch World. The magician sensed traces of Klarion's magic on Paul, but is delighted to learn of Klarion's death.

Paul then visits Talia and Nyssa al Ghul about the Lazarus Pits. Both are willing to give him some assistance, but lack in-depth knowledge about how they work, since they're a finite resource that was previously monopolised by Ra's.

The first few experiments are partially successful, reviving one subject successfully and failing to revive one who had already been reincarnated. However, some of her victims are in Hell, and when Paul attempts to revive one of them, Satanus is able to use the connection to open a portal and drag Paul and his associates into Hell. Despite running low on demon-slayer ammunition, Paul is able to hold off the ambush long enough for them to escape.

The Renegade prepares to arrest the corrupt British government officials (most of the executive and legislature). As part of that, he commissions a red ring from a Qwardian, which Geoffrey Talbot is able to wield. Under his supervision, Lex Luthor announces plans for cosmic converter-based power generation and a space fleet.

The title refers to Paul's resurrection attempts.

  • Came Back Wrong: Paul tries to resurrect someone from Hell using a Lazarus Pit, but Satanus hijacks the connection and Mr Okereke emerges as a demon. And sends the whole party to Hell.
  • Casual Danger Dialog: Paul and Alan chat about the attacking Grundymen while beating them all over the street. Jade, as the only non-Lantern, is less sanguine.
    Alan: Who is it?!
    Paul: It's a zombie, Alan!
    <beat>
Alan: Did it say what it wants?!
    Paul: No! I'll ask!

    Alan: Hey, that's my driveway.
Alan: I'll fix it when we're finished.
  • Internal Reveal: Paul tells Jade about his true age and his comic-based metaknowledge. She takes it pretty calmly.
  • Likes Older Women: Jade finally learns Paul's age and realises why he finds her mother attractive. However, she prefers that he not bring it up again.
  • Loophole Abuse:
    • Mister Metcalf is under contract to Alva Industries until his inventions make them enough money to pay his contract out. However, rather than directly exploiting his inventions, Alva is letting another company hold the intellectual property and lease it back to Alva, which uses it to make huge profits — then only credits Mister Metcalf with earning the licensing fee.
    • Lex Luthor advises Mister Metcalf to retaliate against Alva by getting degrees he doesn't really need or care about, since his contract obliges Alva to pay for his education.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: Sort of. Teth Adom deliberately makes a fool of himself in order to show the woman he wants to marry that he can be informal.
  • Mood Whiplash: Things are heating up between Paul and Jade when she finds out it's his birthday. Then the scene cuts to the Renegade, who is facing down the crippled Joker and grumpily demanding that he sign Kyle Knight's autograph book.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: Grundymen turn up at Alan's house, looking for Klarion.
  • Sensory Overload: Paul performs a quintessence waveform scan without the Ophidian. It would have worked, except that someone smacked him in the brain with the Anti-Life Equation and jolted him back to himself.
  • The Power of Hate: Geoffrey Talbot has adapted to constant hate - but not Unstoppable Rage. No, he is a man of Tranquil Fury and revenge served cold. Which enables him to safely use a red power ring.
  • When Trees Attack: Euanthe fixed the soil and made a forest! Which the country of Rhelasia was very pleased about, except for the part where they cannot under any circumstances let the locals cut the trees down for firewood, lest they be slaughtered by vengeful spriggans.
Paul: "Spirits. Powerful, not human. Not necessarily hostile..."
