Episode 67: Alienated

Takes place 30 September-14 October 2011.

Short version

Paul takes a fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, which allows Blaze to integrate the magic of Gabriel's wings; the angel Zauriel turns up to question him about it, but is impressed by his success and goes back to report to his superiors.

Longer version

Paul takes the Beresfords on a work release, breaking up decommissioned ships for the parts to be sold, with positive reactions. He also checks on Thana, Amazon priestess of the dead, to see how she's coping after Satanus' attack, and finds her planning to go out and proselyte against monotheism to keep people out of hell.

Having talked with Jade about the power imbalance in their relationship, Paul suggests that she train as a Darkstar. Jade is surprised by the idea, but not opposed.

He then works with the Kryptonians to retrieve the Kryptonian moon containing Har-Zod's neural imprint, both for its historical value and its built-in defences. Kara finds it hard to see what's left of Krypton, but Lois Lane is happy to have the story. She's less impressed by coming out of warp right on top of Mother of Mercy, who is in-system to help fix Mars, but Paul tries to assure her that Mother of Mercy is fully qualified to catch moons.

Sephtian reports that Blaze's magics are understandable, but he isn't yet sure how to make her compatible with Gabriel's wings. Rather than wait decades for him to study it, Paul goes to the Garden of Eden and takes a fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, in hopes that it will be able to bridge the different energies. Sephtian is unable to fully understand the fruit, but agrees that it might work, and Blaze decides to proceed.

During the attachment process, Zauriel, who was guarding the Tree, appears and speaks with Paul, asking him to repent of his theft. However, Paul insists that he doesn't regret his actions, as he believes that on balance they had positive results. Zauriel states that he has been sent to wait as long as it takes.

Zauriel is then astounded to see that Blaze has been successfully purged of demonic magic, and wants to report such a miracle to his superiors. However, with Paul still unrepentant, he is unable to leave and do so. Paul offers to let him eat some of the Fruit and thus gain the ability to disobey orders; Zauriel is reluctant but sees no other way out of the dilemma.

The Renegade approaches Karsta Wor-Ul and gives her a cloning facility recovered from the Citadel Empire, so she can recreate her species.

The title's meaning is unclear, but may be a reference to Batman's displeasure upon learning that Paul attracted unfriendly attention from the Silver City.

  • Artistic License – Religion: Paul visits the Garden of Eden and takes a fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, evading the guardian angel. (Turns out it was a pomegranate, after all.)
  • Brick Joke: Paul questioned his "Oh El" nickname when he first joined the Team, but Robin and Kid Flash persisted. Now, when Kara visits, she thinks at first that he's another Kryptonian survivor.
  • Crushing Handshake: Thomas Beresford and Magnificus Sivana are about evenly matched, both having Super-Strength from essentially the same source.
  • Demon Slaying: After helping to take down Mr Okereke, Euanthe is eager for more. Paul gives her some wood from the Tree of Knowledge so she can integrate more demon-unfriendly magic.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Apparently Ganymede was responsible for Zeus forgetting to replace Prometheus' eagle when Herakles killed it.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Kara isn't used to a yellow sun, and manages to break Speedy's power armor while working on it.
  • Funny Background Event: Another phone call with someone in the background, this time Zatanna eavesdropping on her father.
Zatara: What exactly is it you are looking for?
Paul: A fruit from the Tree of Knowledge.
    [Beat]
Zatara: You wish to go to the Garden of Eden,-
    Zatanna: Is that Paul?
Zatara: -and steal one of the fruit which God specifically instructed Adam and Eve not to eat?
Zatanna: It is! Nioj ni enohp llac!
  • Hypothetical Fight Debate: Paul asserts that Catwoman isn't at Batman's level; she has escaped from him plenty of times, but couldn't actually fight him. Jade is sceptical.
  • Planet Spaceship: Briefly, at least. With Paul providing a spatial warp and three Kryptonians pushing, a moon is dragged from Krypton to the Sol system, just to get the attached moonbase.
  • Reasoning with God: Zauriel still wants Paul to repent of stealing the Fruit of Knowledge, but after seeing what Paul accomplished with it (turning a part-demon into an angel), he decides that on balance the outcome was good, and leaves to report the breakthrough to his superiors.
  • Sympathetic Magic: Satanus gains access to Blaze's mini-hell and uses it to attack her. She has to disconnect from it to stop the attack, losing most of her power.
