Recap / Total Drama: "The Sucky Outdoors"

Go To

The campers are sent out for a night in the woods. While Duncan terrifies the rest of the Killer Bass with some campfire tales, Katie and Sadie get lost in the woods and the Screaming Gophers have a run in with a bear.

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Katie and Sadie, who get lost and have (by their standards) an epic quarrel over it.
  • A Death in the Limelight: The episode's focus on Katie and Sadie ends with Katie's elimination.
  • Air Quotes: Courtney uses air quotes during a confessional to emphasize how alleged her "alleged cuddling" with Duncan as caught on camera in the morning actually is.
  • Art Shift: During Owen's story about killing the bear, the visuals shift to a crayon drawing-like style.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After Owen leaves to find food, a pizzaman appears, leading both the campers and the audience to assume the obvious... then the cameraman takes the pizza for the crew, which is then followed by Owen coming out of the bushes, freshly-caught fish in hand.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Twice over... first with Izzy in a bear costume and then with an actual bear.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Izzy, Heather and Owen deliver one to a bird that interrupted their argument.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: When Owen catches some fish, Izzy takes one and bites straight into it raw.
Izzy: Oh, I love fish, I love fish! (bites one) Oh...I guess we should cook it first, huh?
  • Blatant Lies: Owen's story about killing a ten-foot-tall bear. Also, Courtney's explanation for Katie and Sadie's absence.
Courtney: I'm pretty sure they got eaten by wolves last night.
    Duncan: Darn shame.
  • Blowing a Raspberry: Katie and Sadie get separated from the other Killer Bass while out in the forest. After some time, their moods drop and they get into arguments. Sadie accuses Katie of being bad with directions, as evidenced by the fact that they're lost, which Katie counters by blowing a raspberry at her.
  • Bowdlerise:
    • Surprisingly averted, as the title was left uncensored when the episode aired in the US, despite nearly every other instance of the word "suck" or "sucky" being censored in the first season.
    • Played straight with Gwen's line to Izzy after the bear prank, "What are you, some kind of freak?" being changed to "What are you, some kind of weirdo?"
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Cody pees himself twice when confronted by bears, the first one a very convincing disguise of Izzy, the second a genuine one.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Owen does this (accidentally) to a bear, thinking that it was a fake set upon them by Chris.
  • Cringe Comedy: Geoff and Bridgette's budding romance doesn't begin on the right foot.
Geoff: Wow! You pitch a tent like a guy!
(Bridgette shoots him a confused and unimpressed look)
  • Crying Wolf: Thanks to Izzy's prank, the Gophers assume the real bear is either Chris or one of the production crew, before realizing it is a real bear.
  • Cue the Rain: After Bridgette accidentally burns the Killer Bass' tent down, Courtney exclaims, "Things could not possibly get worse!" before it starts raining. She screams in frustration.
  • Delicious Distraction: Katie and Sadie get lost from the rest of the Bass when they come across a bush of wild berries.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Owen says this word-for-word after Izzy reveals herself in a bear costume.
  • Disqualification-Induced Victory: The Killer Bass make it back to camp first, but Chris points out they don't have all their members, noticing Katie and Sadie aren't there. This causes the Killer Bass to lose the challenge.
  • Exact Words: Chris says the first team back wins, and by team, he means the entire team. As a result, the Bass lose when Katie and Sadie are not with them when they arrive.
  • Feud Episode: Katie and Sadie have their first out of many feuds in this episode after getting lost in the woods. They reconcile but are forcibly separated from each other after Katie gets eliminated
  • Hook Hand: Duncan uses one to scare the living daylights out of his fellow teammates at the end of his campfire story.
  • Horrible Camping Trip: Neither team has a good time trying to survive out in the woods. They don't even get to sleep in their tents; the Gophers get chased up a tree by a bear and the Bass' tent is burned down when Bridgette accidentally kicks an ember from their campfire at it.
  • It Amused Me: Izzy's excuse for trolling her team with the bear costume.
  • Jar Potty: When the Killer Bass have settled in their tent for the night, some of them have yet to empty their bladders to get a good night's rest. DJ is one of them and too scared to leave the tent to go behind a tree and so he pees into a jar right next to everyone else.
  • The Klutz: Bridgette, on her way out of the tent, manages to burn the whole thing up after accidentally sending burning embers near it.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Owen brags about killing a 10-foot Grizzly bear with his grandfather when he was younger, and claims to be capable of handling a wild bear. Sure enough, when bears come along (one being Izzy in a suit), he cowers in a tree like the rest of the team.
  • Lack of Empathy:
    • Heather doesn't feel any regret at reading Gwen's diary in front of the entire viewing world in the previous episode, and is only bothered by the fact that Gwen dumped Harold's red ant farm on her when she slept.
    • She also does not appear to be bothered by the possibility of Izzy having been devoured by a bear.
    • Courtney and Duncan try to dismiss Katie's and Sadie's absence by saying they were eaten by wolves.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Katie and Sadie have these spats after getting lost in the woods as they fight over things including Katie's sense of directions and an incident in their trip to the beach involving Katie driving Sadie's mom's car into a snack shack.
  • Nature Tinkling: The challenge is for the teams to go out camping in the woods for one night, so that means that anyone who has to go has to go on the grass. Of the Screaming Gophers, it's Izzy who disappears into the woods for a toilet break, but because she comes back disguised as a bear to scare her teammates she might have just made an excuse. Of the Killer Bass, DJ is too scared to go into the woods and pees into a bottle, while Bridgette takes her chances outside. She gets startled by bats and accidentally causes the tent to burn down. Whether she ever goes after that or not is not addressed.
  • Nighttime Bathroom Phobia: Both Bridgette and DJ are scared to go to the bathroom at night in the woods, but while Bridgette at least tries to, DJ resorts to a jar.
  • No Sense of Direction: What started Katie & Sadie arguing was when the latter accuses the former of this.
  • No Sympathy: Nobody on the Screaming Gophers takes Heather's side when Gwen dumps Harold's red ant farm into her bed, seeing it as justified payback for reading Gwen's diary, and then humiliating her on camera.
Heather: Ugh! She is so the next one to leave!
    Trent: Who?
Heather: Who do you think? She dumped Harold's red ant farm into my bed!
Trent: Yeah...but you did read her diary out loud to the entire world.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently Katie Drives Like Crazy because she drove Sadie's mom's car into a snack shack. She claims it was in her blind spot.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • The Gophers realizing that the second bear isn't Chris trying to scare them, but a real bear.
    • Katie and Sadie when the Bass are giving them a collective Death Glare for causing them to lose the challenge.
  • Parental Bonus: Geoff's horrible attempt at complimenting Bridgette by saying "You pitch a tent like a guy!" is already hilarious to kids for how awkward-sounding it is, but they'll likely miss out the fact that "pitching a tent" has an even less flattering meaning to older audiences.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Katie and Sadie, who spend most of the episode bickering before making up at the end... just in time for Katie to take the Boat of Losers.
  • Potty Emergency: In the middle of the night, Bridgette has to leave the tent to pee, but she's scared of the woods. She gets attacked by a swarm of bats, and while stumbling around, accidentally kicks an ember from the campfire in the direction of the tent and burns it down.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the phrase "the great outdoors".
  • Scary Shadow Fakeout: While out camping in the woods, Bridgette has to go pee in the dead of night and leaves the Killer Bass' tent. She is spooked by a swarm of bats and one gets stuck on her face. Her panicked movements to get it off are emphasized in shadow form by the campfire against the tent panel, frightening the Killer Bass who were already on edge by Duncan's story about a serial killer.
  • Security Cling:
    • Courtney jumps into Duncan's arms after hearing a wolf howl in the distance.
    • Katie and Sadie at the elimination ceremony when there's only one marshmallow left.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Courtney and Duncan get a lot this episode, mostly her clinging to him out of fear and for comfort.
    • Owen and Izzy, primarily over Owen's false bear stories.
    • Geoff with Bridgette because you can see them cuddling before Courtney and Duncan wake up.
    • Trent and Gwen again, as you can see Gwen holding onto Trent when it looks like Leshawna is about to be killed.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sleep Cute: The teams have to spend a night in the forest. When morning comes for the Killer Bass, Bridgette is cuddling up to Geoff and Courtney is lying half on top of Duncan. Bridgette and Geoff are cool to find themselves in their positions and Duncan likes Courtney's attention too, but Courtney, still in denial about her feelings, is horrified at what she's been doing.
  • Tempting Fate: Courtney said that things couldn't possibly get any worse after Bridgette burned the tent down. Cue the Rain.
  • Troll: Izzy dresses up as a bear to scare the Gophers just to scare them. This unfortunately draws a real bear over to the campsite, likely presuming Izzy was a female given that it sniffs her first.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: During the Gophers' hot tub party, Owen vomits after eating too much, grossing out Heather.
  • When It Rains, It Pours: The Screaming Gophers are chased into a tree and the Killer Bass lose their tent while out camping in the woods. Inevitably, the night goes from bad to worse when it starts raining with a vengeance.
