Recap / Total Drama: "Not Quite Famous"

Go To

The teams are pitted against each other in a talent contest. Meanwhile, Heather has Lindsay spy on Gwen for her.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Gwen has her diary read out loud. Gwen's voice actress, Megan Fahlenbock, voiced Jen in 6teen, who had a similar situation happen to her, although in Jen's case, that was an accident.
  • Air Quotes: Cody won't leave Gwen alone, despite his claim he respects her privacy. As she happens to be writing in her diary, he says that he knows it's not for his eyes and, as he makes air quotes to indicate his use of uncharacteristic slang, that "it's cool, brah."
  • Ambiguous Situation: Since Heather's alliance's 5 votes against Justin indeed proved to be a majority due to him being eliminated with no need of a tie-breaker, someone outside the alliance must have voted for someone other than Heather. Did Cody vote for Trent? After all, he didn't seem bothered by Heather reading Gwen's diary at all and instead enjoyed it, at least until he found out that his crush is interested in Trent instead. Or did Justin vote for Trent, as due to being a Narcissist he could have been jealous of the praise and better score (in the non-Netflix version) which Trent got for his performance. Or were both Cody and Justin the ones who voted for Trent?
  • Ant Assault: Heather reads Gwen's diary out loud to the whole world on stage during the talent contest challenge. In retaliation, Gwen dumps Harold's red ant farm into her bed.
  • Boobs-and-Butt Pose: Katie and Sadie dance together in hopes they'll get to represent their team at the talent show that evening. Towards the end, Katie has her butt turned to the camera while her upper torso is twisted far enough sideways that not just her boob is visible, but also her belly button.
  • Bowdlerise: Two lines were censored in the American airing.
    • After Cody gets into Gwen's personal space and smells her hair, she says, "What are you? Some kind of freak?" The word "freak" was changed to "weirdo".
    • When the Killer Bass need someone to replace Geoff in the talent show, Bridgette says, "We already know Tyler sucks, what can Duncan do again?" The word "sucks" was changed to "stinks".
  • Broke the Rating Scale: Unlike the other campers in the talent show, Heather’s rating isn’t shown after her “performance”. The implication is that Chef was so disgusted by her actions that he didn’t even give her a score.
  • Coy, Girlish Flirt Pose: A rare male variation: Cody briefly takes this pose while trying to flirt with Gwen.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Harold, once again, this time by showing his beatboxing.
  • Death Glare: Gwen and Leshawna give Heather ones when she gets the last marshmallow. Gwen's death glare is especially vicious.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Heather decides to steal Gwen's diary and then reads it in front of the entire world, simply because Gwen questioned her style of leadership.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Lindsay is sent out to spy on Gwen, but finds the task boring. Not boring is the sight of Tyler as he passes by wrapped in a yoyo cord. His butt is pointedly left unwrapped and the yoyo rhythmically taps underneath it with each awkward step. Lindsay ditches her task to make out with him.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Gwen gets payback against Heather reading her diary on TV by dumping Harold's red ant farm all over Heather's bed, causing her to run out screaming.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Nobody is amused by Heather reading Gwen's diary in front of the entire viewing world. Even Chris outrights tells Heather he thinks she should have been sent home.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: When spying on Gwen, Lindsay distracts herself by staring at Tyler's behind.
  • Epic Fail:
    • Bridgette's talent show performance involves walking on her hands, but thanks to all the chips she ate earlier, she vomits everywhere and falls over herself.
    • Cody's attempts to cozy-up to Gwen also fail horribly.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Chris, of all people, is appalled by Heather's reading of Gwen's diary. He also refers to Justin's later elimination as "very wrong", possibly due to figuring that Heather must've schemed to avoid getting the boot for the diary stunt.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Judging by her reaction, Gwen is absolutely shocked that Heather stole her diary and would then read it, even saying "She wouldn't!", right before she reads it.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Owen is one of the people that ogles Justin after he puts out the fire.
  • Facepalm: Katie and Sadie are the first to take a shot at getting to represent their team at the talent show that evening. They perform a dance together, which is so awful that Courtney's jaw drops and she slaps her face.
  • Female Gaze: While Lindsay was supposed to be spying on Gwen for Heather, Lindsay instead focuses her attention on Tyler, focusing on his butt.
  • Food as Bribe: Heather says that getting Owen to vote for Justin was "a piece of cake". Immediately afterwards, Owen is seen in the the confessional with an actual piece of cake.
  • Gasshole: Owen's talent audition is burping the alphabet, which all of the guys unanimously approve of, but Heather finds it disgusting. When he tries to "toot Beethoven's 5th" however, everybody stops him.
  • Gilligan Cut: When Chris says that the talents have to be legal, Duncan angrily snaps his fingers, as if to say "D'oh".
  • It Amused Me: Heather's reasoning to reading Gwen's diary in front of the entire viewing world.
  • Jaw Drop: Everybody's reaction to Harold's beatboxing skills.
  • Kick the Dog: Heather reads Gwen's diary out loud in front of all the campers for no other reason than to humiliate her, and makes it a point to not stop reading until she sees Gwen run away in shame.
  • The Klutz: Bridgette, who completely messes up her 20-minute handstand, which breaks Courtney's violin, and her attempts to fix it make the situation even worse.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When Geoff is told he's already on TV, he runs up to the camera, and shouts "Hello out there, dudes!"
  • Literal Metaphor: When describing how she got Owen to vote off Justin, Heather simply says "and Owen? Piece of cake!" It's then shown that she literally bribed him with a piece of cake.
  • Make-Out Kids: Tyler and Lindsay while they are in the bathroom, having somehow gotten tangled in Tyler's yo-yos.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": The Gophers do this when Beth's flaming batons go far higher than usual, and Beth doesn't quite know how to catch them.
  • Mating Dance: Izzy auditions for the talent show by doing a rather seductive dance, hypnotizing Owen in the process.
  • Moment Killer: Owen and Cody are this to Gwen and Trent, splashing Gwen in water. Though it's implied that jumping into the lake was Cody's idea.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Justin uses it as his talent.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Bridgette says this word for word when she accidentally destroys Courtney's violin.
    • Gwen is clearly horrified when Heather pulls out her diary in front of everyone onstage, knowing what's about to come next.
  • Perverted Sniffing: Cody hits his low when it comes to hitting on Gwen. He tries to make smalltalk while she's trying to write in her diary, tries to read what she pens down, and when she keeps giving him the cold shoulder, he sniffs her hair. Gwen is disturbed and while Cody isn't done being a creep, he does realize this was not an action to ever repeat.
  • Plot Armor: Heather resorts to intimidating Lindsay and Beth as well as bribing Owen with cake into voting with her in order to ensure her safety.
  • Plot Hole:
    • Chef doesn't rate Heather's "performance", although given that everybody, including Chris, was sickened by Heather's act, it is highly possible he deliberately did not give her a grade out of disgust.
    • Since this is a pre-merge challenge and Chris never said the individual with highest score wins for their team, the challenge should've been won by the team with the better score. The Gophers scored one more point than the Bass, yet they still lose. Since Heather's score for her "talent" is not seen, it's possible that Chef was so disgusted by her reading Gwen's diary that he automatically failed the Gophers, or he was so impressed by Harold's beatboxing that he gave the Bass the win.
      • The Netflix version attempts to fix this by lowering Trent’s score from eight to five, but this has the effect of rendering Chris’ line about how the Gophers “hold the lead with Trent’s love song” nonsensical, since Justin scored higher than him at six points. It would’ve made more sense if Justin’s score was bumped down from six to five and Trent’s from eight to six.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the film Almost Famous.
  • Scooby Stack: From top to bottom, Bridgette and Courtney peer past the stage curtain to look at Harold, whom they are resigned to accept as their last hope to win the talent show.
  • Secret Diary: Heather steals and reads Gwen's diary aloud on national television to humiliate her. While no one stops her, everyone, including Chris and Chef, is disgusted by her action and it plays a major part in the Screaming Gophers losing the talent show.
  • Ship Tease: We get a little bit of this when Izzy does her hypnotic dance for her audition, with Owen commenting that "she's good".
  • Shipper on Deck: Heather mockingly notes that Gwen and Cody are hooked up when she sees Cody open the cabin door for Gwen. Gwen takes advantage to troll both of them by sarcastically stating that they are going at it big time, and she needs to swim to get away from Cody.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Side Bet: None of the guys on the Killer Bass believe that Bridgette can stand on her hands for twenty minutes, so she dares them to a bet. Everyone chips in with chocolate and cash, but the bet is forgotten about when Bridgette accidentally unties a stage light that smashes down on Courtney and her violin.
  • Snarking Thanks: Trent sarcastically thanks Owen and Cody after they splash Gwen when they jump into the lake, which drives her away. Owen says the same to Cody afterwards.
  • Snub by Omission: The Killer Bass have to shove one last contestant on stage to have a shot at winning the talent show. Bridgette realizes that Tyler, Duncan, and Harold are the only options left. She follows this up with a note that Tyler is too clumsy before asking Courtney to remind her what Duncan is good for, omitting Harold from further consideration.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: A puke-prone Bridgette stumbles into Tyler's arms, prompting Lindsay to exclaim that she should puke on her own boyfriend. Heather hears her and, having previously forbidden Lindsay from hooking up with anyone from the Killer Bass, demands that she repeats herself. Lindsay hastily replies that she "didn't say boyfriend".
  • Talent Show: This is the main challenge of the episode.
  • Thing-O-Meter: The contestants are marked on their talent by the Chef-o-meter, which counts Chef's approval of their talent.
  • Threw My Bike on the Roof: Heather reading Gwen's diary not only gained her nothing in the long run, but it caused her team to lose the challenge and solidified Gwen as her enemy for the rest of the series.
  • Vomit Chain Reaction: Bridgette projectile vomiting on Katie causes the latter to vomit on Sadie as well.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Bridgette, who pukes all over the audience and the stage at the talent show.
  • We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties: After Bridgette ruins her part of the talent show by projectile vomiting all over the audience, Chris calls for a break to clean up. For the next three seconds, a simple animation in black-and-white of a man in the 1960s ironing his shirt plays. The accompanying music is an instrumental rendition of "The Girl From Ipanema".
