Recap / Total Drama: "So, Uh, This Is My Team?"

Go To

14 new competitors are dropped into a wild new island in Western Canada and forced to build shelters out of junk.

Tropes:

  • Affably Evil: Max creates a rather ominous Establishing Character Moment, but politely takes a stick of gum from Sky in the opening.
  • Animal Stampede: Chris puts the two teams' shelters to the test by sending a moose stampede their way. The Pimâpotew Kinosewak have a treehouse, so they're safe, but the wizard's tower of the Wâneyihtam Maskwak doesn't survive. Therefore, the Pimâpotew Kinosewak win the challenge.
  • Bitch Alert:
    • While still on the plane, Amy twice demands Samey to switch seats with her, first because she's disgusted by Beardo, then because Jasmine's size intimidates her. When everyone has to jump out of the plane and Amy gets her parachute working, Samey holds on tight to her sister until Amy gleefully kicks her away.
    • While en route to Pahkitew Island, Sugar pins Topher against the wall and threatens to kill him if his fidgeting scuffs her shoes.
  • "Blind Idiot" Translation: The team names, Pimâpotew Kinosewak and Wâneyihtam Maskwak, were supposed to be translations for the Soaring Eagles and the Ferocious Tigers, but Chef relied on a free online translator for reference, so the teams are instead the Floating Salmon and the Confused Bears.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Topher somehow figures out Chris is about to go to commercial.
  • Continuity Nod: Among the trash that is in the first part of the challenge, one of them is the satellite the audience saw in the opening for "Bigger! Badder! Brutal-er!".
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The Pimâpotew Kinosewak easily win the challenge.
  • Ear Ache: Rodney, Amy, and Samey are put in charge of getting the wheelbarrow and the wood needed to build their team's shelter, but Rodney's preoccupied with flirting with Jasmine. Annoyed, Amy grabs him by the ear, tells him to move it, and drags him along to the supply stash.
  • Establishing Character Moment: As is the standard for new campers at this point, though for the first time, Chris doesn't introduce them.
  • Everyone Meets Everyone: Aside from twin sisters Amy and Samey, the third-generation campers meet for the first time.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Beardo takes his elimination surprisingly well.
  • Fanfare: The human soundboard Beardo provides the triumphant trumpets to inaugurate the wizard's tower the Wâneyihtam Maskwak built. Dave tells him to quit it.
  • Fooled by the Sound: Beardo often uses his expert beatboxing to perfectly imitate sounds that mislead his fellow contestants. For example, he makes construction sounds that fool Team Kinosewak into believing Team Maskwak is ahead in the building challenge.
  • Glad I Thought of It: Jasmine orders the Pimâpotew Kinosewak to grab material for their shelter, but Scarlett argues that the wheelbarrow is just as important. Her argument is longwinded and technical, so Samey tries to finish for her that they need the wheelbarrow to transport the material. She, however, is interrupted by Amy, who insists it's all her idea in the first place.
  • Groin Attack: Beardo gets hit in the groin by Chef's tennis ball cannon.
  • High-Five Left Hanging: As the Pimâpotew Kinosewak celebrate their first victory, Samey tries to get a high-five from Max, only to be told that "evil does not high-five".
  • Human Shield: Amy uses Samey as one.
  • Introdump: The 14 third-generation campers are introduced here.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Everything Amy does to Samey.
    • Chris gets two: Leaving Chef on the falling plane with the campers, and refusing to call Sammy by her real name.
  • Lightning Reveal: The blimp carrying the new campers enters a storm. As the first strike of lightning flashes up the passenger compartment, Chris dramatically appears out of nowhere and instructs the campers as to what to do for their first challenge: grab a parachute and jump, because the blimp is going down. When only Topher and Chef are left, the oddly calm Chris reveals that they're talking to a hologram, hence why he could pop up out of nothing.
  • Mage Tower: Leonard, who 24/7 LARPs as a wizard, proposes that his team builds a wizard's tower as their shelter. The idea receives majority support and with their limited resources and a lot of gathered rocks, the Wâneyihtam Maskwak get the tower set up. Chris, however, did not warn them there'd be a test if the shelter is moose-proof and a stampede makes short work of the tower.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Chris pegs Ella and Topher as this when they happily respond to his telling the campers they're going to have some fun, though in Topher's case it's more sucking up than anything.
  • Oh, Crap!: Chef after realising Chris was a hologram on the exploding blimp.
  • Only Sane Man: Dave quickly establishes himself as the sole beacon of normalcy among the Confused Bears, who are otherwise composed of oddballs (Shawn and Ella), assholes (Sugar), absolute lunatics (Beardo and Leonard), and people who are a bit too willing to humor the lunatics (Sky).
  • The Prankster: Beardo attempts to be this to his team, though it only serves to lead to his elimination for not helping much during the challenge.
  • Ship Tease: Leonard and Sugar.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Supervillain Lair: Max tries to find one for himself in a brief scene, finding the cave that would later become the shelter for the Confused Bears. He runs out screaming after he gets scared by a swarm of bats.
  • Thrown from the Zeppelin: Or rather forced off the zeppelin, which is how Chris determines the teams of this season.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Beardo is booted off in the first episode without getting a chance to develop his character in any way.
