Recap / Total Drama: "Runaway Model"

Go To

Lindsay briefly returns to the island to judge a fashion show, but things go sideways when she is kidnapped by a yeti. The campers must rescue her from Boney Island to secure a win for their team. The Mutant Maggots win, and Sam is eliminated after his video game withdrawal reaches unsettling levels.

Tropes:

  • Air Quotes: Zoey is done with Mike's apparent two-timing with Anne Maria. So when he tells Zoey he likes her hair, she retorts with air quotes that his "character" Vito probably likes Anne Maria's hair.
  • Always Need What You Gave Up: While the teams head out to save Lindsay from a yeti on Boney Island, Scott tries to get hold of Zoey's trust. As his icebreaker, he decries that his team voted off Dawn the other day, as she can communicate with animals and would've been able to save Lindsay assuredly and peacefully.
  • The Cameo: The classic contestant brought back this episode is Lindsay. She's meant to be a judge during the fashion contest, but she gets abducted by the yeti and then it's up to the current contestants to save her.
  • Caught in a Snare: Fang has a snare set out for Scott, the bait being pepperoni pizza. Scott properly questions why there'd be pizza just lying on the ground and notices Fang hiding behind a tree ready to cut the rope that'll close the trap. He loudly states that he doesn't like pepperoni and circles around to the rope while Fang goes over to the pizza to remove the pepperoni. Scott cuts the rope, trapping Fang and leaving the pizza safe for the taking.
  • Crocodile Tears: Scott realizes that the merge can't be far off and that he has yet to get a hold on the Mutants Maggots. When the teams head out to save Lindsay from Sasquatchanakwa, he draws Zoey's attention by moaning and sobbing. When she asks him about it, he expresses regret over the Toxic Rats voting off Dawn, who could've talked to Sasquatchanakwa. For extra measure, he leans on Zoey's shoulder to cry some more and successfully wins her sympathy. In the confessional, his fake crying flows over into sincere maniacal laughter.
  • Crush Blush: Dakota does this in response to Sam calling her an angel.
  • Crushing Handshake: After the elimination ceremony, Jo is moved over from the Mutant Maggots to the Toxic Rats. This means that she once again is on the same team as Brick, also a former Maggot. They did not part on friendly terms, but Brick's not one to hold grudges and holds his hand out to welcome Jo to his team. Jo takes it, pulls him towards her, counters that she's welcoming him to her team, and crushes his hand in a display of dominance.
  • Damsel in Distress: Lindsay becomes this after being kidnapped by the Sasquatchanakwa.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Lindsay says this of the Sasaquatchanakwa, insisting the big guy is just sensitive about his body issues.
  • Description Cut: When Chris wonders what happened to the construction workers who were going to build a resort on Boney Island, we cut to the Woolly Beavers, chewing on femur bones, wearing hardhats and drinking coffee.
  • Drop Dead Gorgeous: Thanks to Mike's Chester persona, Jo's makeup looks horrifying, with Brick fainting when he sees Jo's makeup. Jo, assuming she looks pretty, openly says the trope word for word, completely ignoring the looks of horror on her team mates at her appearance.
  • Evil Laugh: After manipulating Zoey, Scott does this in the confessional. The moment is ruined when one of the flies goes right into his mouth.
  • Eye Poke: When Jo switches teams with Scott and joins the Toxic Rats, Lightning, who's bad at reading gender, expresses happiness that the team remains all guy. Unamused, Jo pokes him in the eyes and advises that he gets them checked.
  • Fashion Show: The premise of the challenge.
  • Genre Savvy: Scott, well aware that Chris will merge the teams very shortly, doesn't try to sabotage his team in this episode, and instead begins to look at who he could have as an ally on the Maggots. He promptly begins to start manipulating Zoey, and it works for a few episodes.
  • Graceful Loser: Sam simply remarks he's out of continues and apologizes for not being of more help to his team.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: We don't get to see what the original second part of the challenge was going to be because the contestants were sent to Boney Island to rescue Lindsay.
  • Hope Spot: Seeing the situation as Donkey Kong, Sam races up the scaffolding and recreates assorted beats perfectly, only to get easily tossed aside by the Sasaquatchanakwa.
  • Hypocrite: While this has applied to Chris before, this incident is especially egregious. He immediately mounts a rescue mission for Lindsay as he openly fears legal repercussions if something happens to her, yet he openly created an environmental disaster and blatantly broke a number of laws without a care in the world.
  • It Has Been an Honor: Brick salutes Sam, after the latter is eliminated.
  • Megaton Punch: Jo delivers one to the Sasaquatchanakwa when rescuing Lindsay.
  • Mouse Trap: Sam demonstrates the Super-Reflexes he developed through 10 years-worth of playing video gaming by unbaiting a mouse trap without setting it off. He then unwittingly steps on said trap and sets off a dozen additional traps as he hops backwards.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: When Lindsay says the Sasaquatchanakwa is just struggling with "big, hairy body issues", Jo admits she can relate.
  • Palette Swap: The cowboy boots are a light blue recolor of the ones Lindsay usually wears.
  • Potty Emergency: Cameron and Mike desperately need to use the bathroom, which, unfortunately for them, is preoccupied by the girls.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Why Chris makes the second half of the challenge to save Lindsay, as he is explicitly threatened with legal consequences if something happens to her.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on "runway model".
  • Revealing Hug: Scott begins his manipulation of Zoey by fake-crying over Lindsay's potentially lethal ordeal. For extra sympathy points, he gets her to hug him while he continues crying on her shoulder. As she gently tells him not to worry and that it'll all work out, he flashes a grin at his success behind her back.
  • Sanity Slippage: Suffering from video game withdrawal, Sam starts seeing things as video game bits.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The shot where each member of the Toxic Rats are displayed on a TV screen in their own squares resembles the intro sequence of The Brady Bunch.
    • Zoey and Anne Maria mention Princess Leia and Queen Amidala.
    • The monster turtle that attacks Lightning resembles Gamera.
    • The fashion challenge is based on Project Runway. Chris also dresses like the host, Tim Gunn.
    • Sasquatchanakwa capturing Lindsay takes many elements from King Kong (1933).
    • Sam imagining himself in a game-like world while is based on Scott Pilgrim.
    • Sam hallucinates ducks with targets on the way to Boney Island.
    • Rescuing Lindsay takes the form of Donkey Kong. Sam notices this and, in his videogame withdrawal, does just about everything that happens in the game.
  • Split-Screen Reaction: During Chris's episode intro speech, the now exclusively male Toxic Rats are each given a quarter of the screen marked by a unique background color. They assess each other across the quarter borders amicably, except for Scott who grins at Lightning and Lightning who responds with concern.
  • Swallowed a Fly: Scott's maniacal evil laugh in the confessional comes to an undignified end when he swallows one of the flies in there with him.
  • Team Hand-Stack: With the last girl voted off the previous episode, the Toxic Rats rename themselves Team Man. They officialize it with a team hand-stack, but when Sam joins in, the other three pull back their hands in horror of his bulked-up gamer thumb.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Jo goes into one after seeing how bad Mike screwed up her make up.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Sam manages to get Dakota's number at the end of this episode, only for him to lose it as he's flung off the island, much to her sadness. Similarly, this is one of the few times where the Rats lose that has nothing to do with Scott's sabotage (in fact, Scott didn't even try to sabotage his team this episode).
  • Your Princess Is in Another Castle!: The Mutant Maggots do this deliberately to try to lure Sasquatchanakwa away from Lindsay, until Mike's Chester persona emerges and nearly ruins it.
