Recap / Total Drama: "Backstabbers Ahoy!"

Go To

The Toxic Rats lose yet again, and Scott tricks his team into eliminating Dawn. Dakota continues her duties as an intern, helped by Bridgette. Mike attempts to explain his actions to Zoey without revealing his secret.

Tropes:

  • Abnormal Ammo: The contestants use (live) mutant rattlesnake/seagull hybrids to shoot at the bells on top of the sea mines.
  • Bag of Kidnapping: When Dawn is voted off Chef takes her bag from her, throws it over her, and places her in the bag on a catapult to launch her off the island.
  • Bland-Name Product:
    • Sam mentions playing Guitar Band 9.
    • Sam also mentions owning a Swii.
    • Dawn mentions selling things on "Crudslist" ("Craigslist").
  • The Cameo: Bridgette makes a brief appearance to show off the target-shooting challenge.
  • Cassandra Truth: Dawn tries to defend herself by saying that she wasn't the thief, but it was Scott.
  • Continuity Nod: We last saw a seagull-gun back in "Beach Blanket Bogus", albeit used by Chris.
  • Delayed Explosion: The last sea mine that Cameron and Lightning are thrown at takes a few seconds to explode.
  • Drawing Straws: Brick proposes that the Toxic Rats draw drinking straws to decide who will dive in the first part of the challenge. Scott vetoes it on his own and demands that Brick dives since he's new to the team and has yet to prove his loyalty.
  • Epic Fail: Cameron's attempt to do push-ups.
  • Everything Makes a Mushroom: The sea mines the teams must bring to explosion go up in mushrooms.
  • Frame-Up: Brick and Dawn become the targets of Scott's Team Killer strategy. Scott goes around stealing various possessions of both teams with the intent to frame Brick for it later that day, but Dawn makes the mistake of not keeping quiet about her discovery of Scott's scheming. So, he blames the thefts on her instead, putting everything he stole and his own shark tooth in the bag Dawn had earlier gone beachcombing with. Dawn doesn't get a chance to defend herself and is voted off, although her name gets cleared by the time of the finale.
  • Handshake Substitute: Dawn and Lightning fistbump after the Toxic Rats win the first challenge and earn themselves a quality speedboat for the second challenge.
  • He Knows Too Much: Dawn immediately realizes that Scott sabotaged the team, which causes Scott to change targets, as he had planned to eliminate Brick.
  • Hope Spot: Dawn attempts to save herself from elimination with the invincibility statue she found, only to find out it was a fake Scott created.
  • In the Back: This is how Scott sabotages the Rats' victory, specifically, shooting Sam with the mutant seagulls that were supposed to be for the sea mines.
  • The Leader: Dawn steps into this role for the Toxic Rats when Lightning goes down.
  • Let Me at Him!: Scott convinces everyone that Dawn is the one who went around stealing whatever she could. Anne Maria wants to beat her up for stealing her hairbrush, but Jo, whose whistle was stolen, stops her teammate in her tracks not to save Dawn, but to call dibs.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: Brick addresses his team consisting of four guys and one girl politically correct: "Men, and Dawn..."
  • Non Sequitur, *Thud*: In a final attempt at sabotage, Scott shoots Sam with the mutant seagull cannon. As the poison kicks in, Sam's pupils dilate and he stands up in the boat to place an order for one double decaf half caf de cafit, going unconscious as he blurts out the final parts of the order.
  • Pec Flex: Vito tells Anne Maria and Zoey not to fight over him as there's enough of him to go around. As he speaks, he lifts his arms behind his head and flexes his pecs seductively.
  • Pet the Dog: Jo congratulates Cameron for winning the challenge for the Mutant Maggots along with the rest of the team, a rare moment of genuine respect and praise from her.
  • Ring-Ring-CRUNCH!: Scott attempts to do this with Bricks very loud alarm clock, albeit reversed. It doesn't go very well for him.
  • Sea Mine: The second part of the challenge is for the two teams to get in boats and trigger a total of three sea mines between them. To do it safely, each boat is equipped with a mounted gun with which to shoot the bells atop the bombs that when rung bring about the explosion, but any means to activate the bombs are allowed. The Toxic Rats claim the first bomb when Scott shoots it. The Mutant Maggots claim the second bomb courtesy of Svetlana's unparalleled acrobatics. After that, the Mutant Maggots crash and Jo settles victory for the team by throwing Cameron onto the last bomb.
  • Shamed by a Mob: It happened to Dawn after Scott framed her for the stolen belongings. Anne Maria and Jo attempted to beat her up, until Scott intervened and told them "We'll deal with this rat (Dawn) tonight", and mocking her misfortune, and because of this, Dawn got voted off by her fellow teammates
  • Shout-Out: Lightning dreams about winning the Super Bowl.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Brick delivers one to Dawn after she's framed for stealing her teammates' items.
    Dawn? You're a thief?!

Brick's Alarm Clock

Because he's a military cadet, Brick's alarm clock plays a Reveille every morning. His teammates are not impressed.
