Recap / Total Drama: "Evil Dread"

Go To

The campers are sent to the beach to dig up 3D Puzzle Pieces and assemble them into monuments that the contestants visited in World Tour. A long buried personality of Mike's resurfaces while Lightning annoys his teammates.

Tropes:

  • Badass Boast: "One by one, they will all... fall".
  • Bee Afraid: Scott triggers a trap that unleashes a swarm of bees that proceeds to chase him.
  • Big Bad: The Malevolent One reveals himself.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Lightning after Chris outs Jo's campaign to eliminate him and when it happens.
  • Book Dumb: Lightning, more so in this episode because he hasn't eaten for a long time.
  • The Dreaded: The Malevolent One, who, upon re-awakening, out and out terrifies the rest of Mike's personalities.
  • Funny Background Event: As Mike tries to summon Manitoba, Scott gets chased in the background by a swarm of bees he unleashed from a trap.
  • Glad I Thought of It: Zoey and Courtney come up with the same plan to maximize their chances of finding landmark replicate pieces. However, Zoey shares her version first and Courtney doesn't realize it's the same idea as hers and thus tries to overrule her. When Cameron clears up the misunderstanding, Courtney insists they both get credit for the idea and not just Zoey.
  • Huddle Shot: The Heroic Hamsters minus Sam, who has fallen off the platform, huddle together to discuss a strategy for finding all seven pieces of their landmark replica. Zoey comes up a plan for each team member to cover a section of the beach, which Courtney counters with the same plan in different wording. Once Cameron points out they're the same thing, the team agrees and does a Team Hand-Stack, which Courtney openly reluctantly participates in.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Alejandro chastising Lightning for being so arrogant.
  • Irony: Some of the villains consider eliminating Lightning for being too big a threat. Then Lightning proves to be The Load to such a massive degree.
  • Lampshade Hanging: At one point, Gwen questions how someone as dumb as Lightning made it to the final two in Revenge of the Island.
  • The Load: Both teams have one:
    • Lightning to the rest of the Vultures, resulting in his elimination.
    • Sam to the Hamsters, though unlike Lightning, he acknowledges this and volunteers for exile to make up for it.
  • Nature Tinkling: Sam gets stung by a jellyfish and runs into Lake Wawanakwa to pee on himself to alleviate the pain.
  • Obfuscating Disability: Alejandro regained the use of his legs, but he's preferred to pretend otherwise for the time being. He admits it wasn't easy to keep from screaming in front of Heather after a crab pinched him down there.
  • Pet the Dog: Chris has Chef toss shovels at the villains. Lightning catches one before it hits Gwen and hands it to her. Made more notable by the fact that he intended to keep two for himself.
  • Plank Gag: Scott knocks out Manitoba with his shovel when a trap triggers behind him, prompting him to turn around.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the film series Evil Dead.
  • Properly Paranoid: Heather is certain that Alejandro is faking his legs not being able to work.
  • Putting the Pee in Pool: Sam gets stung by a jellyfish and runs into Lake Wawanakwa to pee on himself to alleviate the pain.
  • A Rare Sentence: Sam gets stung by a jellyfish and after escaping the creature runs back into the water where he pees to counteract the burn. In the confessional, he defends himself with the words, "Well, no one else was gonna pee on me." Then he laughs and acknowledges that that is a weird sentence.
  • Scary Stinging Swarm: Scott triggers a trap that unleashes a swarm of bees that proceeds to chase him.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: The Malevolent One, with the Can represented as Mike's mind, however even after he's re-awakened, he's still trapped.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Shovel Strike: Mike (as Manitoba Smith) gets on the receiving end of one from Scott. Little did Scott know that he also has re-awakened Mal.
  • Silly Walk: Alejandro proves that he has the strength to use his hands for movement.
  • Sudden Sequel Death Syndrome: Lightning made it to the final two in Revenge and was even the winner in one ending. This season, however, he's out in the second episode.
  • Suddenly Shouting: An hour into the challenge, the teams are still tied with no progress made since their initial finds. Chris narrates the situation with a soft whisper as if not to ruin anyone's concentration, then switches to frustrated shouting.
Chris McLean: An hour has passed and the teams are still tied at one all. Which raises a pertinent question: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG?!?!
  • Team Hand-Stack: The Heroic Hamsters perform a team hand-stack at the end of their Huddle Shot when they've agreed on a strategy.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Chester after Manitoba gets knocked back into the shared space.
  • Token Good Teammate: Gwen is really feeling the pressure of being surrounded by evil characters.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Scott accidentally hits Mike with a shovel while fending off a swarm of bees in a panic, unknowingly reawakening Mal, the Big Bad of the season.
  • Wham Episode: The Malevolent One, Mike's evil personality, has re-awakened.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: Thanks to a trap, Gwen's attempt to make nice results in Courtney getting covered in garbage. Chris commends Gwen for this, saying she's definitely on the right team.
