Recap / Total Drama: "Saving Private Leechball"

Go To

The war challenge from Action and the paintball challenge from Island are combined for a new wargame challenge, this time using leeches.

Tropes:

  • Abnormal Ammo: Leeches, granted because Chris' Parole forbids him from using paintballs.
  • Always Need What You Gave Up: When the Heroic Hamsters get a head start to the leech weaponry stash, the Villainous Vultures reflect on their choice to vote off Lightning, their most athletic team member, the previous day. Jo, who had a key role in that, defends the vote initially and the team does succeed in getting to the stash first. However, when she is the last Vulture standing during the leechball challenge, Jo too regrets getting rid of Lightning this early when, in her opinion, the rest of the team are wimps.
  • Bland-Name Product:
  • Blowing a Raspberry: Heather blows a raspberry at the Heroic Hamsters when the Villainous Vultures have laid claim to the crate with the good leechball weapons.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: When Heather and Jo argue about Lightning's elimination, Heather says that he would've been very useful in a challenge like this, only for Jo to counter that by saying that they ALL voted him off.
  • Bullet Time: Zoey dodges a hail fire of leeches thrown at her by Jo by bending backwards, a scene which is shown in slow-motion. She ups the ante by grabbing one leech from above her and using it to reload her own slingshot.
  • Call-Back: The challenge is a mixture off the paintball challenge from Island and the war-movie challenge from Action.
  • Catch and Return: Jo throws her supply of leeches at Zoey when her gun jams. Zoey ducks timely and reaches up to grab one leech passing by overhead. Then she returns it to Jo by means of her slingshot, hitting her right between the eyes.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Lightning set up a pre-recorded message in the confessional that would play if he got voted off and someone voiced regret about it.
  • Dirty Coward: Courtney's cowardice in the game by using Sam as a Human Shield is what has her sent to the Villains' team.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Lightning gets back at Jo for voting him off via a pre-recorded video message.
  • Epic Fail: Gwen's attempts at being the leader of the Vultures does not go smoothly, AT ALL.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Team-wise, Courtney gets sent to the Villains' team. Likewise...
  • Heel–Face Turn: Team-wise, Duncan is sent to the Heroes' team in exchange.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Duncan saves Gwen from getting leeched by Cameron, an act that gets him sent to the Heroic Hamsters.
  • Human Shield: Sam, no thanks to Courtney.
  • I Warned You: Lightning's message to Jo about voting him off last episode.
Lightning: I told you you'd regret it! Hah! I win! Sha-WHOO!
  • Loophole Abuse: Chris isn't allowed around hard projectiles such as paint rounds... so he has them replaced with leeches.
  • Pet the Dog: Chris shows this when he questions Cameron going to Boney Island, thinking Courtney should go due to her recent behavior.
  • Pistol-Whipping: Upon finding her leech gun jammed, Jo prepares to batter Zoey with it and would've gone through with it had Zoey not managed to hit Jo with a leech first.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the film Saving Private Ryan.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Taking the Bullet: During a battle of leechball between the teams, Duncan notices Cameron taking aim. Because Cameron goes for a Pinball Projectile, Duncan can't immediately stop him, but the moment he notices the leech coming for his girlfriend Gwen, he jumps in front of her to take the hit instead. The sucker ends up stuck to his butt and Gwen gets hit by Mike when she takes care of Duncan.
  • The Tape Knew You Would Say That: Jo goes into a rant about how weak her team is and that voting off Lightning might not have been a good idea after all cue a pre-recorded confessional video of Lightning rubbing it in on how Jo would regret his elimination.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Deconstructed with Courtney, whose cowardly actions get her shuffled to the Villains team.
  • Token Good Teammate: Played with and Deconstructed. While Gwen's personality fits best with the heroes team, it's deconstructed with Duncan, who gets sent over to the Heroes team for selflessly saving Gwen from getting hit by a leech.
