Recap / Total Drama: "Eat, Puke and Be Wary"

Go To

After Chris gets accidentally caught in one of Scott's snares, Chef briefly takes over the challenges. His relentless hunting pushes Zoey into warrior mode, and Lightning forms a grudge against Cameron for tricking him out of invincibility. Scott is voted out, only to take a beating from Fang as he is eliminated.

Tropes:

  • Booby Trap: Zoey creates several as part of her new commando persona.
  • Book Dumb: Lightning thinks that steak comes from trees.
  • Calvinball: Originally, DJ was supposed to sample the dishes the campers have made; however, he breaks free and runs away, and Chef makes the campers taste test their meals instead.
  • The Cameo: DJ.
  • Camera Abuse: Lightning throws a basketball straight into the camera of the confessional.
  • Caught in a Snare: Scott sets out various snare traps for Fang. Instead of the mutant shark, Cameron activates one and gets swung away. The same happens to Chris, who is thrown into the washroom's septic tank. Later on, Zoey gets into the trapper game too and succeeds in capturing Chef in a net snare trap.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Scott switches his toxic quiche with Cameron's more palatable version to "win" the cooking challenge; however, he still ultimately gets voted off.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chef takes over hosting duties after Chris gets trapped in the septic tank.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Scott gets degraded to this.
  • Disproportionate Retribution:
    • Lightning becomes so angry at Cameron for accidentally winning immunity instead of him that he holds a grudge against him that lasts for the rest of the season, resulting in Lightning gunning for Cameron like a mad man. A bit extreme for just one challenge.
    • Chris arranges for Fang to join Scott on the catapult as payback for one of Scott's traps landing him in that septic tank.
    • Fang's hate towards Scott also counts as this. He's spent the whole season chasing him down because he wants his tooth back, after it accidentally came off the first time he attacked Scott, but as Scott points out, he still has hundreds of teeth even without it.
  • The Dog Bites Back: The interns, who Chris has abused throughout the entire series, make his situation in the septic tank MUCH worse.
  • Edible Ammunition: Chef uses his own spicy pasta recipe to shoot at the contestants.
  • Electric Torture: If a contestant tries to remove the tracking collars themselves, they get a nasty electric shock.
  • Evil Laugh:
    • Chef over getting to put the contestants through his preferred challenge.
    • Zoey after she snaps.
  • Frying Pan of Doom: Chef throws one at Scott when he mocks his idea of a cook-off. Said pan returns to him like a boomerang.
  • Hope Spot:
    • Chris announces he's going to take it easy on the remaining contestants today. Then one of Scott's traps sends him crashing into a septic tank. An enraged Chris puts Chef in charge.
    • After Fang falls in the pit, Scott is relieved that one of his traps finally worked. Then he remembers he didn't dig a pit.
  • Humiliation Conga: Scott gets caught in one of Zoey's traps; as a result he ends up in a full body cast, gets the Marshmallow of Toxic Loserdom tossed in his lap after he is eliminated, and Chris has him take the Hurl of Shame with Fang as retribution for trapping him in the camp's septic tank.
  • Hunting the Most Dangerous Game: Parodied when the second half of the challenge involves Chef hunting the campers as they make their way to the flagpole, complete with a bazooka that shoots spaghetti.
  • I Lied: Lightning offered to help Cameron get to the finish line in exchange for the tracking device being removed. Cameron upheld his end, but when he struggles to keep up, Lightning opts to leave him behind.
  • Internal Reveal: Scott finally learns that Fang keeps going after specifically him because he wants his tooth back, something the audience was aware of since Fang's debut.
  • Know Your Vines: Zoey makes a living salad for the cooking contest. It stands a chance to win, so Scott sabotages her dish by mixing poison ivy leaves into it. When Zoey eats from her salad, her mouth and throat become itchy to the point where it makes her vomit.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Scott proposes an alliance against Lightning, but Zoey laughs at the idea of teaming up with him. When Scott points out what a threat the mega-jock is, Lightning suddenly enters the scene performing an amazing physical feat that leaves Zoey stunned.
Scott: Wow. That sure helped make my point.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • In a rare instance against Chris, he gets caught in one of Scott's snares and trapped in the washroom's septic tank. Also, instead of attempting to save Chris, the interns go out of their way to make his plight worse.
    • Also, Scott gets his comeuppance after getting caught in one of Zoey's traps. He ends in a full body cast and takes the Hurl of Shame with his arch nemesis Fang, who reclaims his tooth from Scott.
  • Lethal Chef: The campers had to cook meals using toxic/radioactive ingredients on the island. Lightning's and Scott's meals were poorly made while Cameron's was palatable enough for Scott to swipe it; Zoey's salad might have been palatable, had Scott not slipped in a "secret ingredient" (poison ivy) to sabotage it.
  • Little "No": Scott when confronted by Fang at the finish line.
  • Look Behind You:
    • Zoey has made a salad for the cooking contest that doesn't look half-bad to eat, which isn't in Scott's interest. As she's finishing up the salad, he points and shouts that there's a bunch of abandoned puppies behind her. Zoey looks and Scott tosses some poison ivy leaves into the salad. Scott covers his tracks by saying he saw wrong and that it's just a bunch of rocks.
    • Cameron and Scott have both made a quiche for the cooking contest, but Cameron's is actually edible. Because the contestants have to eat their own dishes, Scott swaps his and Cameron's quiches by distracting Cameron for a hot second by pointing and claiming there's a blogger from BubbleBoyOnline.Blog behind him. Cameron falls for it and Scott excuses himself by correcting that it's just a tree stump.
  • My God, You Are Serious!: When Scott makes an alliance offer to Zoey, she laughs it off, believing that it was a bad joke. However, she quickly realizes that Scott's proposal was serious, especially after he points out how Lightning has a major athletic advantage.
  • Never My Fault: Lightning probably wouldn't have lost out on immunity, if he had just honored his promise to Cameron.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Chef, when he sees Zoey has gone Commando after everything she has been through.
Chef: I may have pushed her too far.
    • DJ over being back on the island. He says he had vowed to never set foot there again for the rest of his life.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: When Chef hears a bush rustle nearby, he shoots at it until it is revealed go be a giant mutant raccoon with tracking collars on it's tail. The raccoon, understandably pissed off, offers Chef to give him the meatball gun, to which he chuckles nervously, before it puts the gun into his head and shoots into his face.
  • Poison Chalice Switcheroo: Scott switches his awful quiche for Cameron's delectable quiche, allowing him to win the first part of the challenge.
  • Pit Trap: Zoey gets into the trapper game and among others sets up a pit trap. Of all possible victims, it's Fang who falls into it, which saves Scott from being mauled by the mutant shark.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the phrase "Eat, drink, and be merry".
  • Rage Breaking Point: After Mike's necklace breaks in half, Zoey decides she's had enough and undergoes her commando phase.
  • Scary Stinging Swarm: The campers have to gather ingredients for a cook-off in the forest. Lightning is under the impression that steaks grow on trees and that by punching a random tree he'll get a few to fall down. All that comes down is a beehive and its unhappy residents, which show Lightning no mercy.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: DJ runs the heck away screaming after seeing all of the food he'll have to eat as part of his cameo.
  • Shipped in Shackles: The kindhearted but strong DJ is brought in as a classic competitor against his will. He's wheeled in tied to a trolley with a blindfold over his eyes to taste and judge the dishes the current campers prepare. It works only until he sees what the mostly-alive dishes are, at which point he breaks open the ropes and runs away screaming.
  • Shock Collar: Chef hunts down the Final Four as the second part of the day's challenge. Everyone but Scott, who won the first part, gets a tracking collar to make things easier for Chef. As an anti-removal feature, the tracking collars send out a strong shock whenever they're pulled on, although Zoey gets shocked either for having negative emotions or because hers malfunctions. Cameron manages to use his wristwatch to hack his collar open and also helps out Lightning in return for his help getting to the finish. Zoey finishes the challenge with the collar on.
  • Shout-Out:
    • To try and find steak, Lightning tries punching a tree.
    • Zoey's headband and war paint, combined with her use of booby-traps, archery and guerrilla warfare, is based on Rambo. Music similar to the main theme is played when Zoey is setting up traps.
    • The log that swings down and hits Chef's jeep comes from Predator.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Zoey is normally one of the kindest and most compassionate contestants; however, her "steel" side is unveiled after reaching her Rage Breaking Point.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Scott sabotages Zoey and Cameron by tampering with their meals. Scott laces Zoey's salad with poison ivy, while he steals Cameron's quiche and replaces with his ill-prepared version.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Zoey, who goes from a meek Damsel in Distress into a Cute and Psycho survivalist, setting up elaborate traps to get revenge on Chef.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Lightning, which, after accidentally giving Cameron the win, foreshadowed him replacing Scott as the main antagonist of the season.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Cameron vomits after eating Scott's toxic quiche. Also, after being fed some of said quiche at the end of the episode, Chris vomits a LOT.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Both Lightning and Zoey vomit after consuming their meals; while Lightning's meal was likely the result of poor cooking skills, Zoey had her meal sabotaged by Scott.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Scott tries to secure an alliance with Zoey in order to eliminate Lightning, but he also tries to get one with Lightning as a precaution. It doesn't work because while Zoey does betray him as expected, Lightning wasn't even listening to Scott suggesting an alliance and by the time of the vote had a vendetta against Cameron.
