Season 9, Episode 13

Daryl and Connie’s group prepares for an ambush on Beta, while the Kingdom faces new adversaries.

  • Action Survivor: Tammy, Earl, and the Hilltop teens aren’t exactly combat proficient, but they’re at least able to kill a few walkers.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The Highwaymen arrive to help Hilltop fend off the remaining walkers.
  • Call-Back:
    • Carol knows that Jed’s group of ex-Saviors is not responsible for robbing Jerry, because she massacred them back in “Who Are You Now?”.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Dianne comments that killing two guards at once is just like old times, a reference to her feat in Season 8’s “The Damned”.
    • The Kingdom prominently uses imagery of Shiva in their decor, honoring the late tiger who perished in Season 8’s “Some Guy”.
  • David Versus Goliath: Daryl versus the much larger, bulkier Beta has shades of this.
  • Disney Villain Death: Subverted as Beta survives his plummet into the elevator shaft.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: The Highwaymen begin as pirates attempting to extort the Kingdom. However, when they are offered membership in the Kingdom and the chance to watch a movie again, they decide to take up their offer of becoming hired protectors of the Kingdom’s roads.
  • Made of Iron: Beta survives not only his brutal fight with Daryl but falling down several stories in the elevator shaft.
  • Moment Killer: Daryl interrupts Lydia and Henry when they're making out to tell them to prepare for Beta's impending attack. Hilariously, he is already standing in the shadows listening to their conversation and only waits until this moment to announce it.
  • Not Me This Time: The Kingdom’s leaders ultimately deduce that Savior remnants are not responsible for robbing Jerry’s team... though Carol doesn’t admit that she knows it’s not Jed because she annihilated him earlier in the season.
  • Pet the Dog: When Beta finds a Whisperer dying of a walker bite, he tells him that he will always be one of them, and orders that his lover be brought to him to be with him in his dying moments.
  • Promotion to Parent: Earl and Tammy decide to officially adopt the Whisperer baby.
  • Skewed Priorities: Played for Laughs. During the tense negotiation with the Highwaymen, Jerry makes a point to ask for his sword back.
  • True Companions: If Beta’s comforting the dying Whisperer is any indication, even the monstrous hulk of a second-in-command feels kinship with his subordinates.
  • The Worf Effect: Downplayed, but Beta is powerful and cunning enough to give Daryl one of the hardest fights he’s ever faced in the series.
