Season 9, Episode 14

The truth of what happened at Alexandria during the second Time Skip.

  • The Bus Came Back: Frankie, who hasn't been seen since Season 8 finale, appears in the flashback and apparently has moved from Sanctuary to Alexandria. She's also shown to have an adopted daughter.
  • Call-Back:
    • Aaron reminds Daryl of when he told him he’d make a good parent during “The Bridge”.
  • Children Are Innocent: In the flashback, Judith and other Alexandrian children "agreed" to be kidnapped because they were told it was just a game.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Negan has told Judith of the events of Season 7’s “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be” and “Sing Me A Song”; and of Season 8’s “Wrath”.
    • Michonne retells Carl’s death in Season 8’s “Honor” to Judith.
  • Cool Big Sis: Judith and Gracie are shown teaching RJ how to ride bicycle.
  • Enfant Terrible: Jocelyn raised the children of her group to be fanatical murderers.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: We find out how Michonne and Daryl got their X-shaped scars on their backs.
  • Evil All Along: Jocelyn and her group turn out to be insane psychopaths who rob and torture Michonne and Daryl.
  • Evil Former Friend: Jocelyn was a good friend to Michonne pre-apocalypse, but post-apocalypse? Not so much.
  • Foreshadowing: There are a couple context clues early on that Jocelyn and the kids she's traveling with aren't quite right. For one, she never explains where she got her wound or why the group of children were separated in the first place. Then there's the kids themselves, who come off as somewhat stoic and creepy.
  • Pregnant Badass: In the flashback, a visibly pregnant Michonne shows no restraints on fucking up her opponents.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Michonne allows Jocelyn into the safe zone, unaware of her true nature.
  • The Reveal: This episode finally details, in flashbacks, what happened at Alexandria that so severely hardened Michonne and brought on her isolationism.
  • Villain Has a Point: Negan explains to Michonne that Judith might be more willing to speak to her if she was a bit more transparent with her.
  • Villains Never Lie: Negan professes that he has been completely honest with Judith and has answered her questions, to the extent that she knows he murdered Glenn and Abraham.
  • I Want My Mommy!: Judith is screaming for her mom when a walker grabs her legs, showing that no matter how Little Miss Badass she is, she's still an 11-year-old girl.
  • Wham Shot: The Whisperers witness a wagon arriving at the Kingdom, and prepare to go tell Alpha.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Though Jocelyn and most of her kids are killed by Michonne, one of them (Winnie) survives since Michonne doesn't want to kill anymore and tells the messed up kid to go away.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Due to being heavily pregnant, Michonne deeply struggles fighting Jocelyn’s group.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Michonne is obviously reluctant to fight children, but when they keep attacking her she finally stops holding back.
