Season 9, Episode 12

As Alexandria weighs its options in the face of their new enemy, Henry finds himself a prisoner of the Whisperers.

  • Abusive Parents: Even when Lydia was three years old, Alpha beat her moments after she recovered from nearly suffocating to death.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the comics, Beta didn’t debut until after the events of the fair. Here, Beta makes his debut beforehand.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: Michonne claims that despite Negan not doing any harm during his escape, people cannot change. Judith responds that she did, which shakes Michonne so much that she orders Judith to her room.
  • Authority in Name Only: Gabriel laments that even though politically he is the leader of Alexandria by virtue of being the head of the council, Michonne is the one calling all the shots.
  • Berserk Button: Threatening Alpha or her leadership appears to be this for Beta.
  • Blatant Lies: Lydia tries to downplay the resources and power Hilltop has, and doesn’t mention the Kingdom either to her mother.
  • Children Are Innocent: Subverted with Judith; she admits to talking to Negan because she feels sorry for him, but she also has personal motives for doing so and she's well aware of all the things he's done, nor does she actually consider him a friend.
  • Cold Ham: Alpha manages to be dramatic and a real showman even when whispering.
  • Continuity Nod: Eugene remembers how Gabriel had faith in him back during his Face–Heel Turn in Season 8.
  • Devoured by the Horde: Several of the Whisperers suffer this fate when Daryl and Connie leads a herd of walkers into their camp.
  • If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten!: Alpha and Beta order Lydia to kill Henry to prove she is still one of them.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Eugene goes to Gabriel and orders him to settle things regarding Rosita and Siddiq in a way that most importantly makes Rosita happy, admitting that Rosita has no interest in him.
  • Kick the Dog: When Siddiq asks what Alexandria’s survival means if they willingly let the Kingdom fall, Michonne coldly insists that their own survival is worth it.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Henry trying to rescue Lydia from a camp full of psychotic killers definitely doesn’t qualify as a particularly self-preserving move.
  • Make an Example of Them: Alpha decapitates the Whisperer woman and then guts her boyfriend to remind her people why she’s Alpha.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": The Whisperers when the herd attacks their camp while they were sleeping. They’re forced to scramble to put their masks on, but many of them are still slaughtered.
  • Off with His Head!: Alpha beheads the woman who challenged her.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Negan accurately points out that for all of Michonne’s doctrine (which admittedly was written before her hardening) of power to the people, she runs Alexandria with pretty much totalitarian power.
  • The Starscream: A Whisperer couple challenges Alpha’s leadership over her perceived failures. Alpha quickly puts it down, with a little help from Beta.
  • Wham Shot: The reveal shot of the Whisperers camp showing that they have far larger numbers than we’ve already seen.
