Recap / The Ultimate Evil, "To Move Mountains"

Go To

As the Chan Clan attempts to stop the opening of the first Demon Portal, Shendu's interest in Valerie gets a twist. A retelling of "Jade Times Jade".

  • Big "WHAT?!":
    • This is Jade's reaction when Valerie volunteers Tohru instead of her as Uncle's apprentice.
    • Valerie shrieks this when she learns Jade has sneaked after Jackie again.
  • Circling Monologue: When Valerie talks with Shendu, she keeps circling him to prevent him both from spotting Uncle and touching her.
  • Cliffhanger: A Shadowkhan gives Valerie a rose and a message from Shendu: in reference to her earlier statement that she wants to fall in love before getting married, he has accepted this "challenge" of hers.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Subverted. Though Valmont is disgusted that Shendu used his body to kiss Valerie in the previous chapter, he quickly makes it clear that he's only concerned about his own dignity rather than Valerie's well-being or feelings. The Enforcers, however, appear to be genuinely shocked by Shendu's interest in her.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: By his own admission, Valmont considers Valerie to be a boring plain Jane and cannot understand why someone like Shendu would be drawn to her.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • The whole Dark Hand gang learns that Shendu has the hots for Valerie.
    • Valerie finally tells the Chans that she's Shendu's Other, but she doesn't reveal that he also has a Villainous Crush on her.
  • Jaw Drop: This happens twice to Valerie, first when she beholds Po Kong, and secondly when she witnesses the army of Jade's clones restraining the Mountain Demon.
  • Lightswitch Surprise: When the exhausted Valerie returns to her apartment at the end of the chapter, she doesn't bother turning on the lights until she's spooked when something moves in the shadows. Nervously turning the switch on, she sees a Shadowkhan standing in her apartment.
  • Loud Gulp: Valerie does this when she decides to keep Shendu's attention in herself while Uncle prepares Po Kong's banishment spell.
  • Mr. Exposition: Uncle gives in this chapter a more intricate explanation about the nature of having an Other and what makes being a Demon Sorcerer's Other a serious matter.
  • Mythology Gag: When Uncle starts explaining the concept of Others by saying that Shendu wants Valerie's good chi, Jade retorts that Valerie is not Chinese, prompting Uncle to explain the concept of chi. This exchange happens in the Season 3 episode "A Jolly J-Team Xmas", only with Daolon Wong wanting the good chi of Santa Claus.
  • Shout-Out: When Uncle decides it's time for him to find an apprentice, Valerie jokingly asks if it's going to be like Hogwarts wizard training.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Uncle explains that siblinghood is one example of how Others' dynamics can play out.
  • Teach Me How To Fight: Valerie asks Jackie to teach her martial arts for self-defense, and he agrees so that she can protect herself from Shendu when he's not there.
  • Villainous Glutton: As Shendu assesses in his thoughts, Po Kong only wants to quench her insatiable hunger, which ironically makes her the least ambitious Demon Sorcerer.
  • Villainous Rescue: When Valerie is about to be sucked in by Po Kong's reopened portal, Shendu grabs her arm and tosses her into Tohru's arms.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Uncle strikes Valerie for not telling earlier about her Other-connection with Shendu.
