Recap / The Loud House S 2 E 5 Making The Grade Vantastic Voyage

Go To

Making the Grade: When Lisa gets put into Lincoln and Clyde's fifth-grade class, Lincoln's social standing is at stake.

Vantastic Voyage: The Loud kids are sick of their family van always falling apart, so they decide to try and trick their parents into buying a new one.

"Making the Grade"

  • Be Yourself: The lesson Lisa learns in this episode is that she is more helpful to everyone if she is just her genius self rather than acting like a cool kid. Lincoln's classmates also learn to accept the real Lisa when she cures all the kindergarteners of their strep throat.
  • Brick Joke: It's mentioned at the start that a deciding factor in Lisa wanted to move to a higher grade was that she was forced into taking nap time. The episode ends with Lisa completely willing to have nap time, complete with pajamas and nightcap.
  • The Cameo: In Lisa's classroom, there's a photo of a sea sponge, a starfish, an octopus, and a crab.
  • Facepalm: Lincoln does this when Lisa inspires Mrs. Johnson to give the class more pop quizzes.
  • Find the Cure!: Lisa invents a cure for strep throat.
  • Food Fight: Lisa starts one in the school cafeteria, getting her, Lincoln, and his friends send to the principal’s office.
  • Gasshole: Lisa makes fart jokes to help her fit in:
Mrs. Johnson: Who knows the most common gas in the Earth's atmosphere?
Lisa: Nitrogen *gets squirted by collar* I mean, methane! *farts loudly* Get it?
(the class laughs and high fives Lisa)
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: As part of her plan to start "acting normal", Lisa performed laser eye surgery on herself in order to no longer need her Nerd Glasses.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: Lisa wears a leather jacket when she becomes "cool".
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Or rather, Lincoln would like for Lisa to be normal, and she takes this as a challenge.
  • Jerkass Ball: Lisa becomes this after Lincoln makers her "normal", and the Loud family, Rusty, Liam and Zach, and the rest of Royal Woods Elementary also become this when they mistreat Lincoln for making Lisa "normal".
  • Karma Houdini: While Rusty, Liam and Zach do apologize to Lincoln in the end, the Loud family and the rest of Royal Woods Elementary never get punished nor apologize for their mistreatment of Lincoln.
  • The Metric System Is Here to Stay: A consequence of Lisa "acting normal" is that the dinner turned out a disaster. Why? Because the recipe used metric, and she used to help her father with the conversions.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Lincoln's classmates sentence him to "the sticky table" after Lisa gets Mrs. Johnson to have unrealistic expectations in them (i.e., making them read the whole rest their history book), as if they can't bring themselves to punish her.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Lincoln's reaction when Lisa's attempts to be normal, like he suggested, lead to her no longer wanting to use her intelligence to help others. This includes refusing to help her kindergarten teacher cure her classroom of strep throat.
  • Nerds Love Tough Schoolwork: Lisa inspires Mrs. Johnson to increase the amount of homework, and to come up with more pop quizzes.
  • Percussive Maintenance: Lisa does this with a water fountain, complete with "Ayyyy!"
  • Retcon: It was previously stated that Lisa was already a college graduate.
  • Series Continuity Error: It is stated that Mr. Loud can't cook properly without Lisa's help, but previous episodes prove otherwise.
  • Shock Collar: Lisa wears a collar that squirts her with water when she tries to say something scientific.
  • Smash Cut: After Lisa calls for a food fight, the scene immediately cuts to Lincoln and his friends outside of the principal's office.
  • Spit Take: With food rather than a liquid; all the Loud kids spit out their dinner because it tastes horrible.
  • Status Quo Is God: After Lisa goes back to normal and Lincoln's classmates learn to appreciate her, Lisa decides she wants to go back to kindergarten. After all, she gets to have nap time there. She also goes back to wearing glasses despite having self-applied laser eye surgery.
  • Technicolor Science: Lisa's lab equipment when making the strep throat cure.
  • Train Problem: Because "cool" Lisa doesn't do mathematics, Mrs. Loud doesn't know when Pop Pop is going to get off a train.

"Vantastic Voyage"

  • Actor Allusion: This isn't the first Chris Savino project in which Brian Stepanek's character gets a van he gives a female name and becomes highly possessive of.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: The family successfully convince Lynn Sr. to buy a new van. However, they end up regretting it when he becomes too attached to it.
  • Book Ends: The episode begins and ends with the Loud kids pushing Vanzilla up the road.

  • Continuity Nod: As previously revealed in "The Sweet Spot", Lynn Sr. inherited Vanzilla from his father Leonard, who inherited it from his father.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Half the episode focuses on Lynn Sr.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: Lynn Sr. whistles the theme song after helping Lori with a "homework problem".
  • Gone Horribly Right: The kids finally convince Lynn Sr. to get a new van. However, when he becomes a little too attached to it, everybody decides that they want Vanzilla back.
  • Greaser Delinquents: A brief flashback shows that Lynn Sr.'s grandfather was a Fonzie-like rebel.
  • Heir Club for Men: Rita states that Lynn Sr. intends to give Vanzilla to Lincoln someday. This despite the fact that he has five older daughters, the eldest of whom already has a driver's license, the second eldest of whom will eventually get her license, and the other three of whom will be eligible to get their licenses before Lincoln.
  • His and Hers: Lynn Sr. gets a beaded vest to go with a beaded seat cover for Veronica.
  • Hippie Parents: A brief flashback shows that Lynn Sr.'s dad Leonard was a long-haired hippie.
  • I Call It "Vera": Lynn Sr. calls the new minivan "Veronica", and his friends have names for their minivans as well.
  • Jerkass Ball: Lynn Sr. handles it big time when he becomes just a little too attached to his new van.
  • Jerkass Realization: Lynn Sr. realizes how bad he's been when his friends decide to get their old vans back and a family makes fun of him for being a lonely creep in the parking lot of Burpin' Burger.
  • Loophole Abuse: Lori and Leni uses the test drive at the car dealership to do the things that they want to do. Lynn Sr. also takes advantage of this when he needs to get to the dump to get Vanzilla back.
  • My God, You Are Serious!: Lynn Sr.'s reaction when both Lori and his wife want to use Veronica.
  • Never My Fault: Lola gets mad at her family for not warning her about getting hit even though she chose to ignore them and didn't help her family push the van just to prioritize herself.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Rita attempts to get through to her husband by accepting a ride from her coworker Brandon, the winner of the Mr. Hunky Royal Woods contest. Lynn Sr. doesn't even notice.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: Rita tells Brandon to put his shirt back on when her husband fails to notice them.
  • The Precious, Precious Car: Lynn Sr. treats the new minivan like one, and he won't let his family in it lest they get it dirty.
  • Pun: The Loud kids make a lot of them, all involving the word “van”, when trying to convince their dad to get a new van.
  • Shave And A Haircut: When Lynn Sr. first pulls up in Veronica, he honks this tune.
