Recap / The Loud House S 2 E 23 Read Aloud Not A Loud

Go To

Read Aloud: The family embarks on a reading challenge at the library, but Lola refuses to participate.

Not a Loud: When Lincoln discovers the first page of his baby book is blank, he worries his parents are hiding something.

"Read Aloud"

  • Big "NO!": Lola gives an extremely shrill, ear-splitting one as Lincoln is pushing her back into the library.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Louds don't win the overnight pizza party, but Lola is learning to overcome her difficulty reading and she also makes a bunch of mini-pizzas for her family as an apology (since it was technically her fault they lost the reading contest).
  • Blatant Lies: Lola claims that she doesn't like pizza, but as photographic memories show, she was revealed to enjoy pizza. Lincoln then tells her that he doesn't buy it.
  • Blunt "Yes": Occurs when Lincoln and Lola fight over why she doesn't want to read, which also first indicates her inability to read properly.
Lincoln: (as he and Lola get into a Big Ball of Violence) What is wrong with you? Is it that hard to read one measly book?!
    Lola: Yes, it is!
Lincoln: (he and Lola stop wrestling, now he's surprised) Wait, what?
  • Continuity Nod: The Yates are among the families who entered the reading contest.
  • Extremely Overdue Library Book: Combined with Shockingly Expensive Bill, it's revealed that Lisa's racked up $50,000 worth of late fees from books that she's never returned to the library.
  • "L" Is for "Dyslexia": It's possible that Lola might have some kind of learning disability (like some form of a dyslexia), since she confesses that she has a lot of trouble with advancing her reading abilities and she also appears to be the only member of the Loud-family to have trouble with reading (not counting Lily, who's just a baby).
  • Library Episode: In this episode, the Loud Family go to the library and enter a contest where the grand prize is a free pass to a place called Spunk E. Pigeon's.
  • Look Behind You: Lincoln resorts to putting a book in front of Lola and not leaving until she's through. Lola then just points and yells "BOOKS!", prompting Lincoln to turn back, and escapes.
  • Madwoman in the Attic: When Lola refuses to read a book (the requirement to win the contest is for every member of the family to read at least one book), Lucy proposes to chain her in the attic and pretend she never existed; Lana would then have to pretend she's got Split Personality. Lynn Sr. objects that it's too extreme, but Rita begs to differ because "there's pizza at stake".
  • Negative Continuity: This episode contradicts "Ties That Bind", where Lola could read the chocolate chip words on Lincoln's pancakes.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Lisa wears a cowboy hat and mustache to avoid being recognized by the librarian. It somehow works.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Had Lola addressed her problems with reading, instead of treating it as a shameful secret, she could've received help earlier and the family would've won the contest.
  • "Reading Is Cool" Aesop: Lola learns that reading can be fun, and that it gets easier the more she tries.
  • Scary Librarian: Downplayed with Molly Wetta, as she seems to be a polite, laid-back sort of woman. Unless you happen to have excessive overdue fines...
  • Series Continuity Error: In this episode, Lola has trouble learning how to read. However, in a previous episode, "Ties that Bind", when Lincoln is making breakfast for his dad, Lola is clearly able to read "World's Greatest Dad" in chocolate chips. In this episode, it's Lincoln who teaches Lola how to read despite being surprised that Lola can read in "Ties That Bind".
  • Spiritual Antithesis: Ultimately, the episode becomes this to "Sleuth or Consequences". In the former, Lincoln took the fall for his sister (Lucy) to save her from a book-related embarrassing reveal (her copy of Princess Pony clogging the toilet). In the latter, the sister (Lola) prevents Lincoln from taking the fall and owns up to her book-related embarrassment (she had trouble reading).
  • Suck E. Cheese's: Subverted with Spunk E. Pigeon's Pizza-palooza Paradise, which Louds seem pretty excited to go to, parents included.
  • Taking the Heat: Subverted. When the rest of their family angrily confront Lincoln and Lola for missing the deadline, he tries to cover up for Lola by saying that it’s his fault, risking punishment. However, Lola doesn’t want him to go through with this, so she stops him from lying about it, confessing that it’s actually HER fault.

"Not a Loud"

  • The Alleged Car: Vanzilla lived up to its reputation again on the day Lincoln was born, breaking down while Mr. Loud was driving his wife to the hospital after she went into labor with their son.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Out of the four theories that Lincoln and Clyde come up with regarding Lincon's birth, the last one, that he was Switched at Birth, is actually pretty mundane and more grounded in reality compared to the other 3 of him being an artificially created human, a bird/human hybrid and an alien.
  • Artificial Human: Lincolns first theory, after being told by Lori that a scientist (actually the First Lady) brought him home, is that he was created in a lab, so he and Clyde test if Lincoln has any superpowers. He has none, so this theory is dismissed.
  • Bird People: After Leni recalls how Lincoln was brought to their home by an eagle (he was actually wrapped in a blanket decorated with the presidential symbol), Lincoln believes he might be a bird/human-hybrid, and tries to prove this by first attempting to fly and then to eat worms. Both fail, thus jossing his theory.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Although Lincoln learned an amazing secret about his birth, he's not allowed to tell his class about it, thus his project might not go as he thought it would. But he’s fine with it because he’s just happy that he really is a Loud.
  • The Faceless: The faces of the President and First Lady are never shown. Given Lincoln's age, and assuming the show's present is set in 2016-2017 (before Season 5), they're presumably George W. Bush and his wife Laura.
  • Freakier Than Fiction: Between the conclusion Lincoln jumps to about being swapped with another baby and what actually happened at his birth, which sounds more plausible?
  • Green Around the Gills: Lincoln after eating worms.
  • Here We Go Again!: Lincoln and Clyde decide to perform another field test at the end of the episode to see if he has any radioactive powers.
  • Human Aliens: One of Lincoln's theories about his origin is that he is one of these, based on Luna's story that a bunch of men in dark-colored suits surrounded the house the day Lincoln was brought home. He and Clyde put this theory to the test by seeing if Lincoln has any Psychic Powers, which he doesn't. When Clyde suggests testing if Lincoln can regenerate lost limbs, Lincoln quickly dismisses it.
  • Human Alien Discovery: Subverted. Lincoln finds out that his birth story is missing from his baby book, so he and his friend Clyde try to find out why. They ask Lincoln's four eldest sisters what happened and one of them, Luna, remembers seeing a lot of men in black suits and so the boys wonder if Lincoln is an alien and those guys were The Men in Black, especially because Lincoln has white hair. Eventually, it's revealed that Lincoln is actually human. The guys in black suits were just there because he was delivered by the First Lady.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Mr. and Mrs. Loud never told anyone (including their kids) about what exactly happened the day Lincoln was born, until they finally tell their son and Clyde in this episode. This is because he was born in the limo of President and the First Lady, having been delivered by the First Lady herself—apparently, the President and his wife were on their way to a top secret safehouse that's located somewhere in Royal Woods, and Lincoln's were sworn to secrecy about what happened (to the point of where they were forced to sign a confidentiality agreement).
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: Mr. and Mrs. Loud does this when Lincoln wants to know about his birth story, and gets suspicious when his parents are giving contradicting answers to his questions.
  • The Reveal: On the day Lincoln was born, Vanzilla broke down (as it often does) and they ended up getting a lift from the President of the United States—however, once it became apparent that they wouldn't make it to the hospital in time for Lincoln to be born, he ended up being delivered by the First Lady herself (right in the limousine, after both the President and Lynn Sr. passed out). The parents had to keep this hidden from Lincoln (and his sisters) because the President and First Lady were going to their top secret safe house in Royal Woods and were warned not to blow their cover.
  • Running Gag:
    • Lincoln and Clyde performing a field test to see if the former has any powers.
    • Lincoln comparing himself to a character from one of his DVDs/comics with each new theory he comes up with.
    • Clyde claiming, for every theory, that it "would explain his white hair".
  • Series Continuity Error: The picture on the front page of Luna's memory book shows baby Luna with a guitar. However, in the episode "For Bros About to Rock," it was stated Luna did not develop her passion for music until she went to her first Mick Swagger concert, when she was in 7th grade.
  • Spit Take: Mr. Loud spits out his coffee when Lincoln first asks his parents about his missing birth story.
  • Switched at Birth: Lincoln's final theory about his origin is that this happened to him. This is further supported when he and Clyde encounter a family in which the parents both have white hair, but their daughter looks more like a younger version of Lori and has similar tastes in music and food to Luna and Lynn. When Lincoln confronts his parents with his discovery, and even accuses them of having bribed a doctor to make the switch, they debunk his theory and finally tell him the real story about his birth.
  • Take That, Audience!: This is a response to the fan theories that Lincoln is adopted.
  • Toilet Humor: Lana advises Lincoln and Clyde to not go into the bathroom after she just used it. It is implied that she had just taken a dump, as she comes out holding a newspaper (which one frequently reads while going #2, as Lynn did in "Homespun" - given her character she read the sports section in that episode).
  • The Un-Reveal: It still isn't revealed why Lincoln has white hair—also, it's never revealed what Lincoln ends up doing for his class project on the day he was born.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: When Lincoln believes he might be half-eagle, he has Clyde feed him worms. It then Smash Cuts to Lincoln throwing up in the toilet.
