Recap / The Loud House S1E10 "Hand-Me-Downer / Sleuth or Consequences"

Go To

Hand-Me-Downer: Lincoln tries to impress a bike-riding gang by riding Lynn's cool bike rather than a pink, frilly, hand-me-down bike from Lori.

Sleuth or Consequences: When someone clogs the toilet resulting in the kids being grounded until the culprit is found out, Lincoln tries to find out who did it so he can go to a comic book convention.

"Hand-Me-Downer"

  • Animate Inanimate Object: Colonel Crackers, Luan's old ventriloquist dummy.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Lynn when Lincoln confesses that he took her bike that is now stolen.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Besides Lincoln as usual, Colonel Crackers occasionally comes alive and talks to the viewer.
  • Brick Joke:
    • In a flashback, Lincoln receives Lynn's old jockstrap as a hand-me-down. Later, when he falls painfully on her bike seat, he admits he should have worn it. Furthermore, when Lincoln goes to confess to Lynn that he lost her bike, he puts on the jockstrap to protect himself from the expected reaction.
    • In one scene, Clyde makes an offhand remark that his parents are going antiquing for the day. At the end, Clyde brings back Lynn's stolen bike, saying that his parents found it while antiquing.
  • Cool Side Car: In a flashback, Luna modified the hand-me-down bike with a sidecar for Charles to ride in.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: The farmer covers his pig's eyes when Lincoln rides by them on his hand-me-down bike.
  • Demonic Dummy: Colonel Crackers, apparently.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: One of the members of the biker gang, Rusty Spokes, becomes a part of Lincoln's friendship group in later episodes.
  • Groin Attack: Lincoln when he lands on Lynn's bike seat from above. He also wears a cup to avoid this when he almost confesses the truth about what happened to her bike the first time.
  • Helping Another Save Face: Lucy reveals that she was the one who clogged the toilet with a book she's embarrassed about reading since it's Sickeningly Sweet. Her brother Lincoln prevents their other sisters from mocking her for it by pretending it's his book.
  • Karma Houdini: Downplayed: It isn't revealed who stole Lynn's bike, but it does wind up back at the Louds.
  • Malaproper:
Lincoln: I'll be back before you can say "combover sloppy".
    Lynn: Crossover stoppy.
    Lincoln: Right, those.
  • Negative Continuity: Despite him giving Lynn's bike to Lana at the end, Lincoln will be seen riding it in future episodes.
    • Unless there’s a likely chance the two share it.
  • The Reveal: After Lynn's bike is stolen, the girls reveal to Lincoln that it is also a hand-me-down.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: When Lincoln shows up at the park on Lynn's bike, he says, "Hey, guys, feast your eyes."
  • Rockers Smash Guitars: In one flashback, Luna gives a smashed guitar to Lincoln as a hand-me-down. The gag being is that it’s now near-impossible to use.
  • Running Gag:
    • Papa Wheelie getting annoyed every time he's replaced as the leader of the bike gang.
    • Colonel Crackers constantly being alive from time to time.
  • Series Continuity Error: In the flashbacks, Lincoln seems to be comfortable reading comics while wearing pants, despite that in "Undie Pressure" he's not comfortable reading in them.
  • Squick: invoked
    • This is Lincoln's reaction after Lynn gives him her jockstrap as a hand-me-down.
    • This is the siblings' reaction when Lori reveals that her shirt is actually the top of their mom's old girdle.
  • Tandem Parasite: Clyde rides his parents' tandem bike around by himself, and then with a dummy in the back seat.
  • Theme Naming: Luan's original dummy, Colonel Crackers, and her current one, Mr. Coconuts, both have names based on food.
  • The Tooth Hurts: In a flashback, a younger Luan bites into a juggling pin and loses two of her teeth in the process:
    "Looks like I made a 7-10 split!"
  • Visual Pun: While Lincoln is riding Lynn's bike, a farmer comments "Nice hog," to which Lincoln compliments him back for his. It turns out he's riding an actual hog.
  • Waxing Lyrical: Luna a couple of times:
"...and then it was ride, Sally, ride."

"Sleuth or Consequences"

  • Big Brother Instinct: Lincoln takes the blame for clogging the toilet so Lucy wouldn't have to endure the embarrassment for reading Princess Pony.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Lincoln takes the blame for Lucy so she won’t become a laughingstock, therefore he gets grounded and misses the convention. Fortunately, Lucy cheers him up by making him a comic of his own.
  • Bottle Episode: Most of the episode takes place inside the Loud house, save for a brief shot of Clyde's room and a few outdoor shots.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: All the sisters, who aren’t Lucy and Lily, mock Lincoln’s Ace Savvy outfit, cut him no slack when it seems he clogged the toilet again and vow to tease the owner of Princess Pony for the rest of his or her life. And when Lincoln interrogates Lori about clogging the toilet, her method of proving her innocence is giving Lincoln an atomic wedgie!
  • Continuity Nod:
    • This isn't the first time Lincoln wears red underwear.
    • Ace Savvy is mentioned again.
  • Destroy the Evidence: To cover up her part in clogging the toilet, Lucy steals a file from Lisa's cabinet containing the records of the family's bathroom habits.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Lincoln finds out that the Princess Pony book that clogged the toilet belongs to Lucy when he reads a page of it featuring a quote that she shouted to Lola in an earlier scene.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Not even Lola wants to read something as sickeningly sweet as Princess Pony. Ironically enough, Lucy enjoys it, as she usually reads it when she needs a break from the darkness. The moral? We all get sick of our favorite things sometimes.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Clyde wears an eyepatch as part of his sidekick costume.
  • Foreshadowing: When Lincoln spreads his suspect cards on the table and goes: "One of you is the perp. But which one?" Lucy shows up right next to him, almost on cue.
    • When Lincoln's sisters laugh at his costume, Lucy's the only one not joining in on the mocking.
  • Fourth Wall Psych: When the girls (save Lily) are glaring at Lincoln for supposedly clogging the toilet, it makes it look like they're glaring at the audience.
  • Fun with Flushing: Lincoln has flushed many items down the toilet, such as his liverwurst-loaf dinner, an embarrassing sweater his mom made him for Christmas, Lynn Sr.'s CD collection for karaoke night, and the Princess Pony book, the last of which, he flushed by accident, not knowing it was in the toilet.
  • Here We Go Again!: At the end, when Lynn goes into the bathroom to go #2 after eating too many spicy meatball subs:
Lana: Dad, I think we're gonna need Big Bertha again!
    • In saying she needs to relieve herself, Lynn uses the universal gesture for #2 (two fingers pointed out, the others rolled up).
  • I Call Her "Vera": The plumber's snake used to unclog the toilet is called "Big Bertha".
  • Jerkass Ball: All the sisters whose names aren’t Lucy and Lily handle this big time throughout the episode, even Leni.
  • Not Me This Time: Lincoln claims he didn't clog the toilet like he usually does. However, it turns out that, while it was Lucy who threw the book into the toilet, Lincoln flushed it down not knowing it was in the bowl.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Lynn Sr. calls Lincoln "Mr. Flush-My-CDs-Down-The-Can", referring to the latter flushing the former's CDs on karaoke night.
  • Only One Finds It Fun: Most of the Louds find the Princess Pony book too saccharine, even Lola, who usually likes saccharine things. Ironically, the one Loud who likes it is Lucy, the stoic goth.
  • "Open!" Says Me: Lincoln repeatedly kicks his sisters' doors open until his father tells him to cut it out.
  • Perp Sweating: Parodied; Lincoln and Lucy interrogate the clogging suspects by shining a flashlight on them.
  • Playing Card Motifs: For the comic book convention, Lincoln and Clyde dress up as Ace Savvy and his sidekick One-Eyed Jack. Lincoln also attempts to imitate Savvy's trademark of posing while holding out a deck of cards:
Lincoln: Let's go see this joker! (holds up a card)
    Lucy: That's a two-of-diamonds.
    Lincoln: Ugh!
  • Recycled Soundtrack: The APM track "Caped Crusader" plays throughout the episode. This is a song frequently used on SpongeBob SquarePants, usually in the episodes featuring Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: When Lucy decides to tell everyone the truth, she says "Sigh".
  • Secretly Selfish: Lincoln, when investigating the "crime" and constraining Lucy to tell the truth. It might seem that Lincoln is committed to truth and justice, but what he really wants is not to miss his comic book convention.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sickeningly Sweet: Princess Pony, according to Lisa:
Lisa: It's so sickeningly sweet, I get a toothache just looking at it.
    Leni: Can that really happen?!
  • The Stool Pigeon: Every time Lincoln clogs the toilet, Lola notifies Lynn Sr. about it
  • Taking the Heat: Lincoln takes the fall for Lucy clogging the toilet so she wouldn't have to endure the embarrassment of reading Princess Pony. Granted, he's really only half-guilty on that one.
  • Tempting Fate: When Lincoln accuses Lucy of tossing the Princess Pony book in the toilet, she claims he has no evidence against her, only for one of her posters to fall down, revealing a Princess Pony poster behind it:
    Lucy: Dang it.
  • Toilet Humor: Lynn's way of saying "take a dump" is "bomb[ing] the toilet", and never goes #2 on the same day of a roller derby game, before the game, considering doing so to be "bad luck" for her favorite team. Then at the end of the episode, when her favorite team wins, Lynn comes back and proceeds to go #2 in victory, with Lana warning Lynn Sr. that they're probably gonna need Big Bertha to unclog the inevitably massive dump.
  • Token Good Teammate: Lucy is this, concerning the sisters.
  • Underwear of Power: Lori mocks Lincoln for wearing his underwear on the outside for his Ace Savvy costume.
  • The Unreveal: We never actually see the Ace Savvy convention.
  • Wedgie: This is all Lori has to do to convince Lincoln she didn't clog the toilet.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After Lincoln shuts the door on Clyde after realizing it was Lucy who clogged the toilet, he is not seen again for the rest of the episode.
  • You Are Grounded!: Until the perpetrator of the clogged toilet is found, everyone is grounded. In the end, when Lincoln decides to takes the blame for Lucy clogging the toilet, the sisters are ungrounded while he remains grounded. As a result, he misses the convention.
