Recap / The Loud House S 2 E 22 Legends Mall Of Duty

Go To

Legends: Lincoln and Mr. Loud go on Legends of the Hidden Temple.

Mall of Duty: Lincoln wants to go to the mall, but has to watch his younger sisters, so he decides to take them to the mall.

"Legends"

  • Anachronism Stew: Lincoln and his dad compete on Legends of the Hidden Temple, which aired from 1993 to 1995, yet the series' timeline is set in the 2010s, as if the show is still on the air.
  • Artistic License: There are a ton of differences between this version of Legends of the Hidden Temple and the actual version:
    • The only teams are the Orange Iguanas and Silver Snakes, with the Blue Barracudas, Red Jaguars, Green Monkeys, and Purple Parrots being absent.
    • The teams are usually a boy and a girl of similar ages, but this one is justified because it's stated to be a Father Son event.
    • The Show Within a Show version uses Atlantis as a theme, as opposed to the theme tying into a specific artifact in the show proper.
    • Olmec doesn’t reveal what room the artifact is in after telling the legend.
    • The Steps of Knowledge involve general questions about Atlantis, as opposed to questions about the story Olmec tells right before.
    • The Temple Games are played for points, as opposed to pieces of the Pendants of Life. In addition, there are no time limits.
    • The run through Olmec's Temple is a competitive time trial, as opposed to being the final challenge for the winners of the Temple Games, and is a Timed Mission.
    • The Louds are able to fend off a Temple Guard without a Pendant of Life.
    • Both team members entered the temple at the same time, as opposed to one team member going in first, followed by the other entering if the first teammate was caught.
  • Awkward Father-Son Bonding Activity: At the start of the episode, Lincoln recalls several father-son bonding activities he and Lynn Sr. tried, which ended in disaster since they have very little in common. And participating in the game show likewise becomes this for the both of them. Especially after they lose the bet they made with the other team.
  • The Bet: Between Lynn Sr. and Lincoln, and their competitors Stan and Steak Stankco: if the Louds win, the Stankcos have to go through airport security wearing their Orange Iguana costumes, but if the Stankcos win, the Louds have to go through airport security in nothing but their underwear. The Louds lose, but are good sports about it and keep their end of the bargain, to which everyone at the airport cheers them on.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Stan and Steak win their bet by doing the Temple Run in only one second, which is totally impossible in real life.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Stankcos win the game, meaning the Louds lost the bet, but they still had a great time. It helps that the people in the airport cheered them on even if airport security came in to arrest them.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure:
    • Mr. Loud at the beginning, because of a One-Eyed Jack costume too small for him, so it bursts when he tries to move.
    • Both Lincoln and Mr. Loud at the end of the episode, courtesy of the bet they made with the Stankcos.
  • Crossover: With Legends of the Hidden Temple.
  • Delinquent Hair: Stan and Steak Stankco both have mohawks.
  • Dumb Muscle: The only round Stan and Steak lose to the Louds is the Steps of Knowledge, and they hate the Louds afterwards for making them look dumb.
  • Dynamic Entry: Like the show, Kirk Fogg enters in a rather wild way at the start of the show and before each of the other rounds.
  • Fan Disservice: Lynn Sr. in his underwear.
  • Food as Bribe: Mr. Loud includes a tray of his lasagna with the submission tape he and Lincoln send to the game show. When they are introduced on the show, Kirk Fogg remarks that he liked the lasagna.
  • The Freelance Shame Squad: Averted; Stan and Steak try to spearhead one of these when Lincoln and Mr. Loud have to walk through airport security in their undies. Instead, the opposite happens and everyone else at the airport cheers them on, much to the dismay of Stan and Steak, who leave in disgust.
  • Minimalist Cast: Lincoln and Mr. Loud are the only Loud family members present.
  • One-Word Title: The first episode of Season 2 to use this format, and the second overall after "Homespun".
  • Pun: Courtesy of Mr. Loud, after he and Lincoln complete the first task using their papier-mâché tails:
Lincoln: Now that’s what I call father and son teamwork.
Mr. Loud: Tail me about it.
  • Produce Pelting: Referenced; when walking through airport security in their underwear, Mr. Loud. tells Lincoln to watch out for incoming tomatoes.
  • Race Against the Clock: The game show here somehow averts the "Get the artifact within three minutes and bring it back" formula, instead having both teams enter the temple one by one, seeing who can bring the artifact out the fastest.
  • Recycled Soundtrack: The show's theme song and the Temple Run theme are the only music from the original show that's retained. The music for the Moat, the Steps of Knowledge and Temple Games have been changed.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Mr. Loud and Lincoln lose their bets and go through the airport in their underwear, but manage to be good sports, to which everyone in the airport cheers them out. They are then arrested by airport security because they broke several airport security rules.
  • Tickle Torture: During the final game, when one of the temple guards grabs Mr. Loud, Lincoln tickles him with a feather so he'll let go of his father.
  • Walk on Water: The first assignment is to cross a shallow pool of water using special paddle shoes.

"Mall of Duty"

  • Badasses Wear Bandanas: Rip Hardcore wears a red bandana. Lincoln also puts on a red bandana when he gets dangerous and tracks down the runaway train in the mall.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Lincoln becomes a lot more competent and athletic than he normally is when he has to rescue Lily from the out-of-control train.
  • Continuity Nod: This isn’t the first time Lucy acted as a fortune teller and gave Flip a fortune that he misinterprets as a sign that his business will become successful, but actually means it will end in disaster.
  • Cool Old Lady: Scoots, the old lady in the scooter, who helps Lincoln catch up with the train and get on board in return for Lincoln’s signed copy of Rip Hardcore's survival guide.
  • Exact Words: Lucy tells Flip his business will make a big splash. It does... in the mall fountain.
  • Eye Poke: Lincoln accidently does this to a large man with his yoyo, when trying to entertain his sisters.
  • Imprinting: The baby ducklings that Lana hatches at the pet store follow her back to the Loud house.
  • Karma Houdini: Downplayed, as he didn't do anything horrible per say. However, Lincoln does get away with wrecking several stands with the train and sending Flip (who, for once, was simply doing his job without being a Jerkass)note  into a pool.note  He also took his sisters to the mall without his parents' approval. Especially noticeable since, usually Lincoln Can't Get Away with Nuthin'.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Lynn Jr. is going to play in a rugby match, but this time only her father accompanies her. Considering that Lincoln and his younger sisters were free to go to the stadium to cheer her on, the fact that they preferred to stay home could be interpreted as retaliation against Lynn Jr. for all the shameful confusion she created in the family in "No Such Luck".
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: When Lincoln's parents leave home with their 5 older sisters, they say they are very proud of him for taking on the responsibility of taking care of his 5 younger sisters in their absence. Later, when they return and see everything in order (without suspecting that Lincoln put his sisters at risk by taking them to the mall), they reaffirm the pride they feel for their son. So Lincoln, overcome by guilt, decides to tell the truth, but Lucy, Lana, Lola and Lisa lie to preserve his reputation, saying that he authorized them to jump into their parents' bed, but only because they upset him so much.
  • Plot Allergy: To make up for the incident with the yoyo, Lincoln gives the man behind him in line a banana-flavored Flippee. Unfortunately, the man is allergic to bananas and his face swells up as a result.
  • Potty Emergency: The younger sisters have these after drinking their Flippees.
  • Runaway Train: Not a real train, but a kiddie ride at the mall. However, it still poses a very real threat to Lily when the train goes out of control with her in it.
  • Spiritual Antithesis: This plot mirrors a few similar beats to "Cover Girls", mainly in how they both focus on some of the siblings sneaking out to other commitments and trying to not get caught by the parents. The key difference is that in the end, instead of getting caught by the parents and forced to humiliate themselves, Lincoln is about to confess only for the younger sisters to lie in order to cover his tracks.
  • Sweet and Sour Grapes: Lincoln goes to a lot of trouble to get a signed autograph from Rip Hardcore, but he ultimately has to give this autograph up in order to bribe Scoots into helping him save Lily from the train, choosing to prioritize his sisters over the autograph he wanted. So Lincoln's quest for an autograph seems to end in futility—until at the end of the episode, Rita and Lynn Sr. reveal that they got an autograph from Rip Hardcore, and they give it to Lincoln as a reward for his earlier agreement to watch his sisters for the day. So Lincoln does ultimately get what he wanted after all.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: At the end of the episode, Mr. Loud reveals that he got Lincoln a signed copy of Rip Hardcore's survival guide as thanks for watching over the younger sisters.
