Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S 1 E 5 Monster Talent

Go To

The fifth episode of the first season of The Looney Tunes Show.

Daffy tries to help Gossamer prepare for a school talent show to help him make friends, per the request of his mother, Witch Lezah. Meanwhile, Speedy casts Bugs in a commercial for his new line of frozen pizzas, which leads to Bugs becoming a celebrity, much to his dismay.

This episode features the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote short, "A Zipline in the Sand".

This episode provides examples of:

  • Accidental Celebrity: Bugs accidentally becomes famous for saying one line in Speedy’s commercial, which he didn’t even want to be a part of.
  • Accidental Misnaming: Speedy Gonzales calls Porky "Pinky", which becomes a Running Gag for the rest of the series.
  • Adaptational Name Change: Lezah is Hazel spelled backwards. This was done due to Disney copyrighting their character named Witch Hazel in the 1952 Donald Duck cartoon, "Trick or Treat".
  • Adaptational Personality Change:
    • In the Looney Tunes shorts, Gossamer was a member of Bugs Bunny's Rogues Gallery, and was usually seen working for Dr. Moron. In this series, Gossamer is the nine-year-old son of Witch Lezah and has a cheerful personality.
    • In the Looney Tunes shorts, Witch Hazel was a crackling, laughing mad witch always trying to kill someone for an ingredient to her potion. In this series, Hazel becomes Lezah, a doting mother modeled after an African-American woman.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Gossamer is bullied at school, and has a difficult time making new friends because of his appearance.
  • Butt-Monkey: Porky. Speedy keeps getting his name wrong and Porky really wants to be in Speedy’s commercial, but Speedy uses Bugs instead and won’t let Porky even be in it just because he says Bugs is “more likable”.
  • Celebrity Is Overrated: Bugs becomes famous after saying a line in Speedy’s commercial, but he quickly grows sick of his fame since everyone who sees him pesters him to say his line.
  • Character Catchphrase: After Bugs stars in Speedy's commercial, everyone in town treats him like "I like it" is his new catchphrase, much to the rabbit's consternation.
  • Continuity Nod: When Daffy tries to help Gossamer win the talent show, he mentions "School is a lot like prison, and I should know, I've been to both.", referencing the events of a previous episode, "Jailbird and Jailbunny".
  • Embarrassing Ad Gig: In this episode, Bugs Bunny appears in a televised commercial for Pizzarriba's frozen pizza, casually stating, "I like it." In-universe Pop-Cultural Osmosis makes this phrase into Bugs Bunny's ad hoc catchphrase, which disturbs him. Even a squad of firefighters arriving to quell a fire at Bugs's house pause to ask Bugs to repeat the "I like it" phrase.
  • Embarrassing Old Photo: Or video, in this case. In the epilogue, Daffy is seen watching an old home movie of him singing off-key at his own school talent show, to which Gossamer asks him if that's the reason why he didn't want him to sing at the talent show. Daffy (who is wearing a pair of 3D glasses he swiped from the movie theater at the beginning of the episode) says it's just as painful in 3D.
  • Entitled Bastard: All the people who pester Bugs to say his line. Special mention goes to the guy on the sidewalk who makes Bugs say it three times, and the mom at the talent show who keeps pestering him.
  • Famed In-Story: Bugs becomes famous for his line in Speedy’s commercial.
  • Glass-Shattering Sound: Young Daffy's horrible singing voice in the old home video ends up breaking Daffy's 3D glasses.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Young Daffy's voice in the old home movie video, being soo offkey that it's manages to break Daffy's 3D glasses.
  • Hypocritical Humor: In the prologue, Daffy is disgusted when he sees Gossamer playing by himself, and says he should get some friends. Immediately afterwards, Daffy is seen playing a card game with himself.
  • Informed Flaw: According to Lezah, the reason she can't help Gossamer with his problem of bullying and friends in school is because he is "in the age where he wouldn't listen to his mother" and the last week called her a "witch". Pun aside, this would suggest a rebellious and hypocrite behavior given his situation in school, but he acts like a good and educated kid through the entire episode. In fact, the reason he doesn't fight back his bullies, as he tells Daffy, is because his mother told him that violence is never the answer. He also judges Daffy based on what his mother says about him, and in general is always respectful to his mother.
  • Jerkass: The mother at the talent show who pesters Bugs to say his line even though a kid, who’s her daughter, is in the middle of her performance.
  • Juggling Dangerously: One of the talents Daffy tries to get Gossamer to do at the talent show is to juggle chainsaws that have been lit on fire. Predictably, this results in Bugs' house catching fire.
  • "Kick Me" Prank: One of the students tapes a "Kick me" sign to Gossamer's back. When Daffy pulls it off, he finds out that it was written on the back of a flyer for the school talent show, giving him the idea to train him for it.
  • Kids Are Cruel: Gossamer’s classmates bully him for being a monster.
  • Loved by All: Bugs becomes a beloved celebrity after he appears in Speedy’s commercial.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: Everyone acts like Bugs saying “I like it” is the most amazing thing in the world.
  • Scary Scorpions: At the talent show, Daffy takes a tank of scorpions from the science lab, hoping Gossamer would do something with them like eat them or let them run around on his face. Gossamer forgoes Daffy's idea and decides to sing. After the talent show ends, Daffy shows Bugs the tank. Bugs asks him where the scorpions are, and the students are seen running from the scorpions, since one of the students was bitten by one of the scorpions.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After the students start getting attacked by the scorpions, Daffy hands Bugs the empty tank, runs to his parade float, and peels out.
  • Skewed Priorities: The two firemen who come to put out Bugs’ burning house stop to ask Bugs to say his line.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Daffy, as usual. When he takes Gossamer to a gym, he tells Gossamer that he’s considered a legend at the gym. He then says “What’s up, man?” to a bodybuilder, who looks at Daffy and says “I don’t know you” before walking away.
  • So Okay, It's Average: In-Universe, this is Speedy's opinion on Porky when he tries to cast Porky in his commercial. Although Porky does succeed in working in the production, Bugs ultimately ends up in the final edit as his personality just flows better in the ad.
Speedy: This guy's [Porky] okay, but I wanna party with this guy! [Bugs]
  • Taught by Experience: Gossamer has been subjected to the "Kick Me" Prank so many times that he automatically knows which student is kicking him.
