Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S1 E4 "Fish and Visitors"

Go To

The fourth episode of the first season of The Looney Tunes Show.

During a rainstorm, Bugs' neighbor Yosemite Sam comes over to visit, due to him switching to solar power, and his house can't run electricity during the storm. As the downpour continues, Bugs and Daffy grow irritated of Sam and desperately want him out of the house.

This episode features the "Chickenhawk" Merrie Melodies music video.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bedsheet Ghost: One of Daffy's plans to get Yosemite Sam out of the house is to have Bugs dress up as one of these. It backfires spectacularly as the duo are locked outside while Sam deals with the supposed specter.
  • Brick Joke: Before heading to bed, Sam tosses Daffy a jar of bed bugs. He later uses the jar to catch the "ghost". Bugs and Daffy only realize this in The Stinger.
  • Complete-the-Quote Title: The episode is named after the saying "Fish and visitors stink in three days."
  • Downer Ending: The episode ends when Bugs realizes that Sam had unwittingly freed the bedbugs from earlier, causing both to start scratching incessantly.
  • Everyone Has Standards: When Sam is finally convinced to leave, he walks off dejected and crying over having no one else to turn to. Bugs immediately invites him back, saying he's not heartless.
  • Freudian Excuse: Daffy's plan to get Sam out of the house is to make things so unpleasant that he'll want to leave, starting with incessant fighting. He claims that's what his parents did to get him to leave home.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: All of Daffy's plans backfire this way.
    • The fake-turned-real fight convinces Sam that Bugs and Daffy need him to help keep things calm in the house.
    • The wild party to annoy Sam while he's sleeping seems like it will work, but then he sees there's karaoke and proceeds to start singing (which makes him the hit of the now ongoing party).
    • The Bedsheet Ghost plan backfires when Sam locks Bugs and Daffy out of the house for their own safety and proceeds to trash the place trying to capture the supposed ghost.
  • Here We Go Again!: In the "Chickenhawk" Merrie Melodies music video, Henery Hawk is fixated on eating Foghorn Leghorn, because as a chickenhawk, he loves to eat chicken. Foghorn tries to get Henery to try some new foods, and eventually succeeds in getting him to eat baked beans, which he ends up liking. However, Henery decides that he needs something to go with his beans, that something being chicken. Thus, the hunt is back on.
  • I Warned You: Daffy continually urges Bugs to not get involved with the neighbors, especially when Sam is suddenly in need of favors and starts making himself at home in their home. By the time Bugs finally admits he was right, Daffy thoughtlessly keeps interrupting him to say he warned him.
  • Never My Fault: As part of their fake-turned-real fight, Bugs claims that Daffy's at fault for the situation that they're in because a few days ago he heard Daffy ask for rain. Though he doesn't deny that he's not responsible for the situation himself.
  • Oblivious to Hatred: When it's finally all out in the open, Sam says he can take a hint. Daffy says he can't, pointing out he missed countless hints that they wanted him to leave.
  • Picky Eater: In the "Chickenhawk" Merrie Melodies music video, Foghorn tries to get Henery to eat something other than chicken, given that he's a giant rooster, but as a chickenhawk, Henery insists on eating chicken. After unsuccessfully trying to convince Henery to eat Chinese food, fish tacos, honey buns, a hot dog with mustard and sauerkraut, and even Pork(y), Foghorn does manage to get him to try his grandmother's baked beans. Henery ends up enjoying the beans, but decides that he needs some chicken to go with them.
  • Shout-Out: One of Sam's possessions is a statue of Wonder Woman.
    • Later in the episode, he sings Cheap Trick's "The Flame" at the party intended to get him to leave.
  • Tempting Fate: Just as the rain clears up, Bugs says he'd go through this all over again out of compassion for neighbors. The rain immediately starts up and knocks out Sam's power again, prompting Bugs to shout at Daffy to get back inside before it's too late.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Yosemite Sam is this. Daffy even warns Bugs about getting involved.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: In the "Chickenhawk" Merrie Melodies music video, Henery explains in song about how much he loves to eat chicken.
Henery: I want some chicken to eat, it is my favorite meat! I like it crispy or glazed, it puts me in a daze! I like it fried up or baked, on my birthday I eat chicken cake!
  • We Are Not Going Through That Again: When it starts raining again, Bugs tells Daffy to get inside before Sam gets to their house.
