Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S1 E3 "Jailbird and Jailbunny"

Go To

The third episode of the first season of The Looney Tunes Show.

After littering in the Grand Canyon and refusing to pay the fine, Bugs and Daffy end up in jail for the crime as well as contempt of court. After some time, Bugs ends up loving prison life while Daffy is fearing for his life with all the other criminals walking around.

This episode features the "Blow My Stack" Merrie Melodies music video.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Aerith and Bob: "I am Count Leopold Von Liechtenstein! And this is Randy." Said by Daffy as he comes up with phony names for himself and Bugs while they're on the lam.
  • Angst Nuke: The "Blow My Stack" Merrie Melodies music video is an entire song about Yosemite Sam doing this when even the littlest of things set him off.
Daddy sent me to school but things got weird
When the kids made fun of my long red beard
And OOOOOOOOOH! I blew my stack!
  • Bearded Baby: In the "Blow My Stack" Merrie Melodies music video, Yosemite Sam is depicted as having his mustache since he was a baby.
  • Can't Get Away with Nuthin': What starts the plot of the episode is Daffy getting caught littering in the Grand Canyon by a park ranger that just happened to be nearby. The ending has Daffy littering again while Porky is driving him and Bugs back home, with a nearby police officer pulling them over.
  • Cassandra Truth: When Bugs tries to turn himself and Daffy in by telling a nearby police officer who they are, the officer in question doesn't believe him, even when Bugs points out the shackles and chain binding them together.
  • Courtroom Antics: Deconstructed. Daffy's attempts to get himself off the hook by engaging in this doesn’t work at all, and not only does it annoy the judge, but it also leads him and Bugs to get jailed on contempt of court charges when the two start arguing and spitting soda onto each other’s faces.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Daffy starts talking to Crusher and things go downhill fast:
Daffy: You'll have to pardon my friend. The heat's getting to him. He's not used to this. He's not a hardened criminal like you. I mean, I shouldn't assume that you're a hardened criminal. But in my defense, you do have a Neanderthal-shaped head, which I normally equate with stupidity—uh, not that you're stupid. I just mean that you look stupid. I don't mean that as an insult. I mean, some people think stupid to mean cool, like "That's a stupid car," "You've got a stupid apartment"...I wish I could stop talking. I'm just very nervous right now. I tend to ramble when I'm nervous. You know what the word "ramble" means? You're probably too stupid to know! And here, I mean stupid-stupid, not stupid-cool!
  • Gilligan Cut: Bugs and Daffy don't have enough money to pay for a hotel room after working for a day at a diner. He tells Bugs that he has a backup plan... and then cut to them sleeping on the roof of a gas station.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: In the "Blow My Stack" Merrie Melodies music video, Yosemite Sam sings about how the littlest things set him off, such as a wheel falling off his favorite toy train when he was a baby, a dolphin looking at him the wrong way when he worked at the merchant marine, people turning their books in late when he worked at the library, and him only getting to three in his attempt to count to ten when he took up anger management classes.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: In this episode, Porky gets a lot of flack because he doesn't have pants on. He eventually buys a pair in the courtroom gift shop.
  • Hartman Hips: The three backup singers in "Blow My Stack" have massive ones.
  • Here We Go Again!: After finally being released from prison, Daffy throws a can of soda out the window of Porky's car. And wouldn't you know it, there's a police officer nearby.
  • Mythology Gag: In the "Blow My Stack" Merrie Melodies music video, the shelves at the library are labelled "Clampett", "Jones", "Avery", and "Freleng". In addition, several Looney Tunes antagonists appear at the Anger Management class Sam attends, including, Elmer Fudd, Sylvester, Wile E. Coyote, Crusher, and Rocky and Mugsy.
  • Never My Fault: Daffy refuses to pay the fine for his littering and attempts to pin the blame on Porky and then Bugs, which leads to him and Bugs being sent to jail for contempt of court charges.
  • Overly Long Gag: Daffy's ramble transcribed above, which goes on for 34 seconds.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Daffy and Bugs' disguise only consists of dyeing themselves yellow, and yet the police don't even make the connection. Especially egregious when one cop looks at a wanted poster and doesn't even see the obvious resemblance. They only recognize them after the dye is washed off by the rain.
  • Police Are Useless: The police can't recognize Bugs and Daffy despite their obvious disguises (with one not even believing Bugs' claim they're the escaped convicts they're looking for, despite having a wanted poster showing their features and the fact the two are shackled together). They also don't even realize that Bugs is trying to tell them that he and "Leopold" are actually on the lam.
  • Prison Episode: In this episode, Bugs and Daffy go to prison for contempt of court when Daffy tosses his empty soda can in the Grand Canyon and refuses to pay the fine for littering. While Daffy is terrified, Bugs ends up loving prison life because he can insult whomever he wants without fear of bodily harm.
  • Shout-Out: The "Darvin" gag is practically a word-for-word recreation of the "Bort" gag in The Simpsons episode "Itchy and Scratchy Land."
  • Time Skip: The end of the episode takes place one year later.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Daffy has one of these about the name "Darvin", only to realize he said all that in front of a kid named Darvin, leading him to awkwardly say "Great name".
  • Who's on First?: When Bugs and Daffy (under their blonde disguises as "Randy" and "Leopold") start to work at a diner, they spot three police officers, and Bugs, against Daffy's wishes, tries to inform them that they're on the lam, leading to this conversation:
Bugs: (giving one officer a note that says "We're on the lam" and whispering) We're on the lam.
Officer 1: You're on the what?
    Bugs: (whispers) Lam.
Officer 1: Oh, lamb? I love lamb.
Officer 2: Oh, is there a lamb special?
Bugs: (whispers) No. We're on the lam.
Officer 2: What's on the lamb?
Officer 3: I hope it's mint jelly. That goes great with lamb.
Bugs: (shouts) No! (pulls Daffy to his side) We're on the lam!
Officer 2: You're on the lamb?
Daffy: (laughs) No, we're not on the lam.
Officer 1: Oh, thank goodness. Rabbit and duck on lamb is way too much meat. I'm watching my cholesterol.
Officer 3: Just give us three veggie burgers.
