Recap / The Interns S 5 E 4

Go To

Phil wants to record a video for his parents about his workplace and colleagues. But every time he choses the worst moment possible, leading to the people acting hostile to him. This wouldn't be the good material... Lyuba suggests him to just record the hospital in action, which leads to him accidentally leaving (still going on) camera in treatment room where it records Varya discussing her fake pregnancy with Lyuba.

Anton Yaroslavsky decides to check his health with Bykov. To hide the fact who he is from Bykov (who doesn't know him in person), Kisegach lies to him that he is her "cousin". Unfortunately, Bykov quickly learns the truth from Gleb, and feels insulted. He lies to Anton that he has the heart issues and must abstain from sex for at least half a year. Kisegach double-checks this, and they confronts Bykov about the fake diagnosis... and this is when he tells them that he is aware about everything. Only then Anton realises that Bykov, in fact, is Anastasia's ex.

Lobanov tries to hit on Irina, who can't stand him. He decides to adhere her group therapy sessions, since she can't just kick him out if he goes as a patient. She still tries to stall for time to prevent him from speaking, but fails. In the end, she agrees to go on a single date with him on condition that he leaves her alone after that.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Lobanov tries to hit on Irina. After his previous antics, she can't stand him (and is actually slightly afraid of him and his temper). Unfortunately for her, Lobanov has an idea to adhere her group therapy sessions, as she can't just kick him out if he goes as a patient. She finally accepts his invitation to restaurant on condition that he would cease to bother her after that.
  • Chekhov's Gun: That camera Phil used during the whole episode in (futile) attempts to record something for his parents, which he leaved (still going on) after he drenched his patient with zelyonka? That camera later records Varya's conversation with Lyuba about her Fake Pregnancy, leading to Phil learning the truth, too.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: When Bykov learns that his new patient is, in fact, Yaroslavsky (Kisegach's new lover and, ergo, his main rival), Bykov, instead of doing his work, fakes the heart problems for him, to disrupts their sexual life.
  • Epic Fail: All of the people whom Phil asks for interview do a poor job, but Kupitman deserves a special mention, since with him, almost everything goes wrong. At first, Phil records him in his usual morning condition — dirty and with strong hangover. Then, after Kupitman cleaned himself and his workplace, he makes a poorly-thought comment, and makes it more awkward with (equally terrible) attempts to apologise. Then he become drunk again, on camera.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Bykov was unaware that the patient Yaroslavsky and Kisegach's new lover Anton are the same person. But cover story (that he is Kisegach's cousin) for Anton leads to Bykov learning the truth, and now going against him.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Irina gets her little vengeance when she realises that Lobanov is disturbed by the other people on her therapy session, and prevents him from leaving, as it's against the rules.
  • Induced Hypochondria: Bykov lies to Yaroslavsky that he has the heart problems, and must abstain from sexual life, for at least half a year.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Lobanov tells Gleb that he must prove to Irina that he is sane, but she is afraid of him. In the middle of this line, he randomly hits a metal bucket hard enough to deform it.
  • Only Sane Man: When Lobanov adheres Irina's group therapy session, he quickly realises just how insane her patients are, and that he's literally sole non-lunatic amongst them. There're a completely dysfunctional alcoholic; a junkie, who, when out of his drugs, starts eating his wallpapers; hardcore BDSM fan with heavy stutter; the guy who has weird fantasies about being beaten (including erotic dreams); and some fat guy who attempted to sell his kidney, before he was told that he wouldn't survive this (he was even forced to spend some time in asylum). Lobanov quickly decides that it's not worth it and attempts to leave, but Irina forbids him — the patients aren't allowed to leave mid-session.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: When Phil tries to record Kupitman for his parents, Kupitman accidentally makes a "joke" about African-Americans (calling them guess what), and makes it even worse by clumsy attempt to apologise. Phil decides to just cut this conversation altogether.
  • Out of Focus: Gleb has no major role in this episode, other than telling Bykov about Yaroslavsky.
  • Rules Lawyer: Every time Irina tries to shut Semyon before he has a chance to say something, the beating-loving patient remembers one of her own rules which allows him to stay and tell his "story". While she manages to force him to be the last one to speak (normally, novices speaks first), she's forced to abide the other rules.
  • Secret-Keeper: Phil joins the (ever growing) circle of people who knows the truth about Varya's Fake Pregnancy, but keeps it from Gleb.
  • Ship Tease: While initially their "date" goes awkward, since Semyon just can't start a conversation with Irina, he eventually salvages the situation by remembering a good (albeit obscene) joke, which actually makes Irina laugh, somewhat softening her to him.
  • Terrible Interviewees Montage: Phil tries to record a video about his workplace, so he can show it to his parents. Unfortunately, everything always goes wrong.
    • At first, Phil tries to record interviews. Bykov outright insults him on camera, and Gleb and Varya have a hated argument (and when he asks them separately, Gleb just leaves after one short comment, wile Varya is enthusiastic at first, but then he mentions her pregnancy (she is not, in fact, pregnant, but tries to hide this, and is not happy by being reminded about this again), and she starts acting hostile. After that, he tries Kupitman (who utterly botches everything), Kisegach (who forces him to reshoot it several times, due to thinking that she botched everything), and Lyuba (who not even bothers to act, since she is busy working). After that, Lyuba suggests him to just record how the hospital works, instead of those stupid interviews.
    • It remains just as bad when he starts recording people in action, since he (again) records Varya and Gleb during their argument, enraging Gleb; records Kupitman accepting bribes from his patient; and Bykov just takes away his camera and puts in on a top of closet. After that, Phil attempts to at least record himself... and accidentally drenches his patient with zelyonka, leading to said patient chewing him out.
  • Unknown Rival: Anton Yaroslavsky was unaware about Bykov's enmity to him (or that he is Anastasia's ex in the first place). Bykov is aware about Anton, but never met him in person before (and in fact only knows his first name).
