Recap / The Interns S 5 E 5

Go To

Lobanov botches his date with Irina and decides to just get wasted. This leads to him accidentally hitting Lyuba in the eye when he returns home. The next day, Semyon learns that despite some awkwardness, his date actually went good... but then Irina finds out about Lyuba and now thinks that Lobanov is Lyuba's abusive husband, and their date was Semyon's attempt to cheat on his "wife".

Phil can't work near his patient, because she is so hot, he starts losing his mind near her and can't concentrate on anything. Unfortunately, Bykov would not give him a new patient, so he must find another way to deal with the problem. He tries physical exercises, but they barely helps, and now, due to him constantly running away and returning tired, both the patient and Bykov thinks that he does that for some despicable reasons. When Phil manages to explain everything, Bykov assigns him to another patient, an old granny, which (hopefully) wouldn't cause the same reaction. Unfortunately for Phil, his new patient's granddaughter is no less attractive than his previous patient, and he still can't work due to his arousal. This time, Bykov just leaves him on a night shift.

Phil, Bykov and Lobanov decides to boycott Varya until she tells Gleb the truth about her "pregnancy". Lyuba soon joins them. But Gleb takes it as them acting like utter assholes towards Varya for no reason, and decides that it is him who boycotts them. Realising that Gleb is about to ruin his life, Varya finally tells him the truth, which predictably ruins their relationship. But it's too late to fix Gleb's friendship with other people, since he considers them keeping the truth from him being a betrayal on their part.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Abuse Mistake: Irina finds Lyuba with a bruise under her eye, and learns that it was Semyon (who lives with Lyuba) who caused it. So, of course she now thinks that he is a Domestic Abuser. Except, he did this completely by accident, and they are not in relationship at all (she let him live with her until Varya deals with her situation with Gleb).
  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: After his date with Irina goes wrong, Lobanov just got drunk and walked home. Unfortunately, he accidentally hit Lyuba in the eye (when she was helping him to undress), strongly enough to leave a bruise, and now she is angry at him. Situation becomes worse when Irina learns about it, too, but makes all the wrong assumptions.
  • Bad Date: It was good at first, but then Semyon ruined everything, because he had not enough money to afford it and was forced to lean from Irina. However, she later tells him that she doesn't consider this to be that bad (this can happen with anyone), and was intended to suggest to pay her half of a price anyway, and even suggests to go on another date.
  • Chekhov's Gun: That bruise under Lyuba's eye? It's not just an excuse for her to join everyone in boycotting Varya; it later leads to Irina mistaking her for Lobanov's wife... and him for Domestic Abuser and unfaithful husband, who tried to "cheat" on Lyuba with her. Oops...
  • Exact Words: Lyuba tells Irina that Semyon lives with her and that he hit her in the eye when he got drunk. She forgot to mention that they are not in relationship and that she just allowed Lobanov to live with her until he finds another place to live. This predictably leads to Irina thinking that Semyon is a married man who tried to cheat on his "wife" with her.
  • Innocent Innuendo: Phil decides to deal with his arousal (caused by his patient) by doing physical exercises. Unfortunately, since his patient is just too hot, he needs many, many exercises and in the end he gets extremely tired. When Bykov (who's not aware) takes away his patient, Phil says that he's tired and his hands hurts; this wouldn't be a problem if not for the patient previously suspecting that Phil runs away to "relief" himself. When Bykov learns why Phil is tired, he comments that it's even worse: it means that it's him who's a pervert (as he never even considered such explanation).
  • Internal Reveal: Gleb finally learns that Varya lied about her pregnancy. This predictably ruins their relationship. Unfortunately, she only did this after Gleb told everyone who previously boycotted her that he considers them to be utter assholes and that he no longer consider them to be his friends.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Phil's patient is too attractive, which leads to him being constantly aroused. He tries to deal with it by physical exercises, but unfortunately neither patient nor Bykov are aware about true reasons he constantly runs somewhere and returns tired, and mistakes this for... something else entirely. Unfortunately, when Bykov finally takes her away from Phil and gives him a new patient (some old granny), it turns out that said granny's granddaughter is no less attractive than Phil's previous patient, which leads to him returning to step one. This time, Bykov just leaves him on a night shift.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Phil's plot is entirely build upon Bykov misinterpreting the situation as something gross:
    • Phil receives extremely attractive patient; so attractive, he can't think straight near her, so he must deal with his arousal by doing physical exercises (which leads to him being mistaken for constantly masturbating by both the patient and Bykov.
    • When situation gets defused and Bykov gives him a new patient (an old granny), it turns out that new patient's granddaughter is no less attractive than Phil's original patient, so when the situation repeats, Bykov (who is unaware about that granddaughter) now thinks that Phil was aroused by the granny.
  • Snowball Lie: Varya still can't tell Gleb the truth, and everyone decides to just boycott her until she does so. Unfortunately, she choses to maintain her lies instead. Gleb, who still believes her, think that they are acting like total jerks to her for no reason and tells them that they are no longer his friends, forcing Varya to tell him the truth before it comes too far. Unfortunately, it's already too late.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • While he agreed to not reveal the truth to Gleb, Phil considers Varya lying to Gleb about her Fake Pregnancy to be so dishonourable, he now wants nothing to do with her, and even refuses to work with her. Bykov agrees and suggests to just boycott her, with Semyon agreeing. They quickly gets followed by Lyuba, because she is forced to let Semyon live with her because of that, who hit her in the eye the previous night when he got drunk.
    • When everyone decides to boycott Varya until she tells Gleb the truth (that she is not, in fact, pregnant), Gleb accuses everyone of being jerks, and says that he refuses to speak to them any further. When he learns the truth from Varya, and Bykov suggests him to apologise before everyone, he replies that since they knew the truth, but keep it hidden, his statement about them being assholes is still valid.
  • You Need to Get Laid: After Phil's... situation with his arousal near attractive girls repeats too many times, Bykov just bluntly asks when was the last time he had sex, and suggests to find somebody, otherwise this would never stop. Unfortunately, this is not for him, since he still has a girlfriend, Jess, back in the USA. Bykov then mentions a second "option": be punished with a night shift.
