Recap / The Interns S 5 E 3

Go To

Varya tries to hide from Gleb that her pregnancy is fake; unfortunately, there's now a risk of becoming pregnant for real, cause Gleb for obvious reasons no longer cares about protection — and Varya would rather avoid it for now. Lyuba sees nothing wrong with it, but tells her that there're two option: be honest for once and tell Gleb the truth, or start taking pills. Varya choses the latter. Meanwhile, Gleb can't just kick Lobanov out, so they must find him a new home first. One possible option is to move to Lyuba. Semyon accidentally learns about Varya not being really pregnant, and gets angry, being ready to tell to Gleb, but she barely convinces him to move to Lyuba and keep quite for a time being.

Kupitman must deal with a VIP patient... so VIP, in fact, that he brings along his bodyguards, who now stands outside Kupitman's office and refuse to let anyone inside. And the patient would do anything to keep all this in secret. Unfortunately, Bykov just can't tolerate not being allowed to walk wherever he wants... and can't act even remotely gentle near any authority. Then Bykov learns about Kupitman's patient despite all attempts to hide him, and invites the press... but the patient manages to use even this to his advantage, and get free PR.

Phil wants to leave back to USA, because his practice in Russia is just too boring: he went here hoping for some hard, interesting cases which would never occur back at home, but it's just a boring routine; he wants something "hardcore". Bykov offers him a chance to try "hardcore" medicine, by spending one day working at the Traumatology. Phil quickly regrets it when he realises just how insane his patients are; when Bykov offers him to return, he consider this to be his life saving.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Phil wanted some "challenge" when he went to Russia for practice, something "hardcore". Bykov offers him a chance to work with new patients in Traumatology. At first, everything goes fine and boring, because Gennadiy, the Head of Traumatology, decides to "help" by sorting out all really hard patients and give Phil, as novice, the easier cases, but once Bykov talks to him, Phil's work becomes a living hell, since he now must deal with all sorts of freaks, from alcoholics and prostitutes to outright lunatics. And those are less bad cases. According to Gennadiy, Phil asked him for valerian, threw up couple of times, fainted, even cried. Bykov later finds Phil just sitting, shocked, and blindly staring into a wall.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Varya didn't think that since she's "already pregnant", Gleb would stop bothering with protection, and she may become pregnant for real. Lyuba sees nothing wrong with it, but Varya would rather avoid it, at least for now. Lyuba tells her about contraceptive pills.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: All attempts to keep that VIP patient's presence hidden fails when Bykov just meets him near restrooms, and decides to invite press — exactly the reason why VIP patient refused private clinics and asked Kupitman for help. Unfortunately for Bykov, the patient manages to exploit this situation for his and hospital's mutual favour, by lying that he is here with a special mission.
  • He Who Must Not Be Seen: Kupitman's VIP patient must keep his presence here in secret from everyone besides Kupitman and Kisegach, otherwise press would find out. His face is hidden even from viewers: when they tells that no one must see him, they mean that.
  • Secret-Keeper: Despite his initial intent to reveal the truth to Gleb, Semyon at last moment (in the middle of revealing Varya's lie, in fact) decides to keep all hidden, and move to Lyuba.
  • Snowball Lie: Varya's lies becomes progressively harder to maintain, since now Semyon is aware about this, and not only he is against lying to Gleb, he is at risk of becoming homeless "thanks" to Varya, since Gleb decided to free some space for Varya. He agrees to keep this secret when Lyuba invites him to live together.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Kisegach tells Kupitman that, given who is gonna be his patient, their hospital's fate would be in his hands. Kupitman tells her to avoid such allegories, given what kind of doctor Kupitman is.
