"You shine a little bit of light, boom-boom, nobody gets hurt."
Written by Michael Horowitz
Directed by Stephen Surjik

"You had a place where you felt loved and you felt safe. Clarice. Where was that?"
John Proudstar / Thunderbird

Carmen calls in Marcos' debt. Meanwhile, John helps Clarice in order to convince her to come back, and Dr. Campbell is setting his plans in motion.

Tropes:

  • Almost Kiss: The first attempt of Lauren and Wes kissing each other gets interrupted by Andy.
  • The Atoner:
    • Wes is very sorry for his criminal deeds in the past and wishes to atone for them.
    • John, still feeling guilt about not telling Clarice right away what Sonia did to her, helps her finding her old foster home.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Lauren kisses Wes just before he leaves with another cell.
  • Blood Knight: After blowing up the russian shipment Marcos slaps on a rather disturbing smile, apparently still having a violent side inside him.
  • Broken Pedestal: Downplayed, but Reed is clearly disheartened to learn that Trask Industries, the company for which his father has worked for years, has been experimenting on mutants.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Wes was previously part of a gang, using his powers to aid them in robberies and such. He's trying to be a better person.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The DOJ lawyer even compares Sentinel Services' treatment of the mutants to the Anti-Catholicism in the 19th century and the islamophobia since 2001.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Jace is willing to take illegal actions in his work but while Roderick is okay with having his lackey give the DOJ lawyer an aneurysm it's clear that Jace is not okay with it. Interestingly enough, despite having worked together with Pulse before, he also seems majorly shocked by the sight of the Hounds.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: In addition to a Bald of Evil, Lodo (Carmen's mutant lackey) also has some nasty facial scarring.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: This is Marcos' justification when Polaris reveals she knows about his work with Carmen, explaining his deal with Carmen to get the information he needed. She still isn't happy about it.
  • Internal Reveal: Lorna finds out about Marcos having made a deal with Carmen.
  • It's Personal: After finding out that Sentinel Services murdered her foster family, Clarice decides to return to the Mutant Underground to continue the fight.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Using their powers, Lorna and Sonia violently extract the whereabouts of Marcos out of an unfortunate Cartel member.
  • Jurisdiction Friction: Sentinel Services and the Department of Justice already don't get along. Now that Jace is getting help from a private contractor and openly flaunting the law, they really don't get along.
  • Manchurian Agent: Dr. Roderick Campbell has a series of Hounds that have been brainwashed to act normal until triggered, at which point they become deadly agents. He plans to use them to infiltrate the Mutant Underground.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Carmen once again tries to invoke this in regards to the Cartel and the Mutant Underground. Marcos once again denies this.
  • The Paralyzer: Lodo, Carmen's mutant lackey, has the ability to freeze people in place, seemingly unaware of what's going on until they're released.
  • The Reveal: Dr. Roderick Campbell is involved with Trask Industries, as was Reed's father.
  • Put on a Bus: Wes leaves to help another cell low on manpower.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Supernatural Powers!: Dr. Roderick Campbell has no problem using his personal Hound to give the DOJ lawyer an aneurysm just to buy a few weeks for Jace to do his work.
  • Secret-Keeper: Reed decides not to tell anybody about Wes' criminal background, telling him that this is something he oughta do himself (or not), which he does.
  • We Can Rule Together: Carmen offers Marcos a partnership between the Cartel and the Mutant Underground.
  • Working with the Ex: Or rather, being forced to work with the ex in Marcos' case.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Thunderbird helps Blink track down her former home, but Sentinel Services has already raided it and killed the foster parents she was staying with.

"Agent Turner, we may finally be in a position to win this war."
