"We always used to talk about going camping. And here we are... the wilderness."
Written by Melinda Hsu Taylor
Directed by Craig Siebels

"There's a Federal Building in Baton Rouge that we need to get into. I know it's a lot to ask, but we think there might be information in there about Sentinel Services and what they did to Pulse."
John Proudstar / Thunderbird

Marcos, Reed, and Andy raid a federal building with information on captured mutants.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Heroism: Wes in an expy of comic book Jason Wyngarde, but on the side of the heroes instead of the villains.
  • Blackmail:
    • Roderick Campbell blackmails Jace Turner into turning over to him the intel he has on the Strucker siblings in exchange for getting him reinstated.
    • At the end of the episode, Carmen calls Marcos to get him to do a job for her, threatening to call Sentinel Services if he refuses.
  • The Cameo: Neal Proudstar, John's father, makes a cameo in a photo.
  • The Chains of Commanding: With war approaching, John feels how hard it is to be responsible for so many of his people.
  • Chekhov's Skill: The episode introduces Wes, whose power is to create visual and auditory illusions. His powers come in handy later in the episode to help Marcos, Andy, Reed and their driver (Thomas) to escape Sentinel Services.
  • Child Soldiers: Polaris decides to train the teens of the Mutant Underground for battle.
  • Deal with the Devil:
    • In exchange for being reinstated, Turner has to hand over the Strucker files to Campbell, something he previously declined.
    • Marcos's deal with Carmen bites him back in the ass, as he is now forced to do her bidding, at the threat of her calling Sentinel Services.
  • Expy: Wes is based on Jason Wyngarde, a.k.a. Mastermind. A version of Wyngarde had previously been introduced in X2: X-Men United: Jason Stryker, a.k.a. Mutant 143, the brainwashed son of William Stryker.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: Andy sees his powers as the first chance to be really good at something.
  • Knight Templar: Turner is gradually turning into one. Still reeling from heaving to re-learn about his daughter's death and re-living the pain he went through, he orders his men to do illegal wiretapping on all phone calls in the vicinity and roars at the one of his agents who expresses doubt.
  • Making a Splash: The episode introduces Naya, a teen girl whose power is to control water.
  • Master of Illusion: Wes has the power to cast realistic visual and auditory illusions.
  • Mythology Gag: The truck used as cover to smuggle Reed, Marcos and Andy to Baton Rouge belongs to Claremont Moving Services. Chris Claremont is the writer that developed the X-Men one of Marvel's flagship titles and author of such seminal storylines as The Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past (which also introduced the villain Ahab, a.k.a. Roderick Campbell) and God Loves, Man Kills.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Roderick Campbell uses his connections in the government to get Turner reinstated after he's put on mandatory leave.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Blink leaves the Mutant Underground after Thunderbird admits he knew about Dreamer brainwashing her and kept quiet about it.
  • Slave Brand: The episode confirms that the symbol Pulse has in his arm and that Dreamer saw in Turner's memories is the slave brand for the Hounds.
  • Stern Teacher: Polaris does not mince her words when teaching the mutant kids and has no tolerance for joking around. This doesn't sit well with Caitlin.
  • This Means War!:
    • Jace Turner is hellbent on bringing down the Mutant Underground, no matter what lines he must cross, after having to live through the experience of losing his daugher twice.
    • At the same time, John is no longer content with just rescuing mutants. After what happened to his friend Pulse, he wants to bring the fight to Sentinel Services.
  • Turn in Your Badge: Turner has been put on mandatory leave after his kidnapping in the previous episode. However, Roderick Campbell gets him reinstated.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Turner has his biggest one yet, see Knight Templar above.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Blink chews out Thunderbird for dropping by her just to get her to use her powers and for keeping Dreamer's brainwashing from her.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: When Reed asks Andy about why he never approached him about being bullied, he replies that there wasn't any time for that, since Reed always worked until very late.

"Whatever it is that you're thinking, you can tell me."
