A ten year old boy named Timmy Turner is assigned fairy godparents when his parents leave him with a mean babysitter. This was the first episode of The Fairly OddParents!, premiering as part of Oh Yeah! Cartoons on September 4th, 1998. Butch Hartman made a reaction video to it here.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Acid Reflux Nightmare: After Timmy and the fairies put her through the wringer, Vicky wakes up to Timmy's parents, leading her to believe the whole thing was a result of overindulging on pizza. Of course, she does suspect That Was Not a Dream when she sees a certain pair of goldfish.
  • Anchovies Are Abhorrent: Vicky tells Timmy she'll order pizza for them if he does the dishes (which Vicky had been told to do by the parents). Timmy complies, but tells her "No anchovies!" Guess what she orders on it.
  • Art Evolution: The drawing style of the characters is definitely rougher looking than when it premiered as a proper series. In addition, the characters have visible dimples at the corners of their mouths when they smile, which were omitted from the final series.
  • Babysitter from Hell: Probably the most famous example.
  • Big Entrance: The arrival of Cosmo and Wanda is initiated with Timmy throwing his Magic 9 Ball against a wall, which breaks in half and magic clouds burst out which poof into them.
  • Bland-Name Product: Cosmo and Wanda first appear to Timmy by popping out of his Magic 9 Ball (Magic 8 Ball).
  • Chained to a Railway: As noted below, Timmy, in his role as Dastardly Whip Lash, ties Vicky to a railroad.
  • Circling Birdies: Vicky gets the stars version after Cosmo and Wanda drop a giant cherry on her.
  • Dastardly Whip Lash: Timmy takes on this role during one of his wishes.
  • Dropped After the Pilot: A very unusual example. Vicky had a younger brother whom we heard screaming over the telephone. We never saw his face and subsequent episodes make no further reference to him, having replaced him with her little sister Tootie.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • In particular, the characters of Cosmo and Wanda. Cosmo comes across as just as intelligent, if not more than, as Wanda. Cosmo does botch one wish, but it's down to his faulty wand rather than stupidity.
    • As noted below, Timmy's parents are The Faceless
    • Vicky mentions having a little brother, as opposed to the little sister that she would have in the show proper.
    • Da Rules are yellow as opposed to purple.
    • While she is still mean to Timmy, Vicky is nowhere near as ruthless or sadistic in the pilot as she was in the series proper, instead coming off as more of an aloof bully.
    • Several characters sound dramatically different from their contemporary versions, either due to different actors or their ongoing ones not yet clicking the characters. Cosmo in particular is given a smooth baritone Phil Hartman impersonation, which even the start of the official series had distanced from for an increasingly shrill, helium pitched voice.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Vicky is shown to be nice when in the company of Timmy's parents; once they step out, she reveals to be a Babysitter from Hell.
  • Everyone Meets Everyone: Shows how Timmy first met Cosmo and Wanda, how they became his fairy godparents, and his first wishes.
  • The Faceless: We wouldn't see Timmy's parent's faces until The Fairly OddParents! premiered as a proper series.
  • Gelatinous Encasement: Timmy does this to Vicky, turning her bathwater into a block of orange gelatin.
  • Holy Halo: Vicky gets one when she's pretending to be nice. It disappears as soon as Timmy's parents leave.
  • Human Cannonball: One of the many things Cosmo and Wanda do to Vicky, she ends up shot out of a circus cannon. She lands Chained to a Railway.
  • I Always Wanted to Say That: When Cosmo is in Darth Vader garb:
"I am your father! I always wanted to say that."
  • Interrupted Bath: Timmy makes Cosmo and Wanda turn the water Vicky is bathing with into gelatin.
  • Pie in the Face: One of the many indignities Cosmo and Wanda visit on Vicky. Cosmo does it while wearing a pair of Groucho Marx glasses.
  • Pilot: It was the first episode and introduced the main plot points.
  • Pint-Sized Kid: In one of the last scenes, Timmy is hugging his mother and he doesn't even come up in size, to his mother's knees.
  • Wingding Eyes: Vicky gets hearts in her eyes when pretending to be nice. Naturally, they're gone when Timmy's parents leave.
