Recap / The Dick Van Dyke Show S 3 E 29 Dear Mrs Petrie Your Husband Is In Jail

Go To

Laura arrives home from a trip to her aunt's to find her husband behind bars down at the police station, accused of illegal gambling and assaulting an officer. With great effort, she gets the story out of him.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Brick Joke: Benny keeps asking Rob to blow on the dice for luck after his fortune turns around when he does it the first time. At the end of the episode, he calls Rob and has him do it over the phone.
  • Cassandra Truth: While Rob is holding Benny's winnings for him, the police raid the poker game. Rob tries to tell them that he wasn't playing, but they don't believe him and hustle him out with the others.
  • Illegal Gambling Den: When Rob arrives to see Benny, he's in the middle of a gambling game in the showgirls' dressing room. He insists Rob stay so they can catch up and asks him to hold his money when he has to go announce the next act. Unfortunately, that's when the cops bust the game, resulting in Rob getting charged.
  • Karma Houdini: Played with. Rob initially wants to pay the fine for illegal gambling and leave, which Laura protests because it was Benny gambling, not him. Rob thinks they'll go easier on a first-time offender, though. However, Benny shows up immediately afterwards, having confessed to the cops after managing to get away from his announcing duties. He gets a suspended sentence, and Rob gets released with no punishment.
  • Lethal Klutz: Rob's charge of assaulting an officer happened due to his clumsiness. While heading out the door, he tripped over a cannon used in one of the acts, which went off. It seemed to hurt Rob more than the cop.
  • Prison Episode: The premise of the episode is hapless Rob ending up in jail thanks to a misunderstanding. However, most of the episode concerns how he got there, not his time on the inside (which didn't last long).
  • Skewed Priorities: When Laura tells him she found out about his imprisonment because of a note on the door, Rob is upset about that information being out there where anyone could see it.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Most of the episode consists of Rob telling Laura how he got bored while she was away, decided to see an act at his army buddy's night club, and got arrested.
  • Who's on First?: Rob introduces himself to one of the club's dancers as Benny's old army buddy. She says, "Maureen Corp", which Rob misinterprets as being a guess about what part of the army. It's actually her stage name. (She does some kind of act in a "patriotic" costume with a cannon.)
  • Worse with Context: Laura thinks the idea of Rob being booked for assault is ridiculous, protesting that he wouldn't hit a cop. Rob then reveals that he's accused of shooting at one with a cannon.
