Recap / The Americans S 6 E 5 The Great Patriotic War

Go To

Paige tells Elizabeth about having sex with someone she met at the bar, and Elizabeth again cautions her about doing that. Despite that, Paige goes to a bar again, and meets a guy she gets along with. However, the guy's friend makes lewd remarks about her, and Paige decides to leave. When the friend grabs her, Paige punches him and fights him off, and when the guy comes out to see what's wrong, Paige punches him in the nose. When Paige tells Elizabeth and Philip about this, Elizabeth is upset about the fact Paige exposed herself about this, and both she and Philip agree Paige isn't ready to be a spy (though Philip, of course, never thought Paige should have been involved in the first place). Later, Philip goes to Paige's apartment and shows her she's not ready by easily repelling Paige's attempts to attack him.

Thanks to following Stan, Elizabeth is able to find where Gennadi lives, though she also spots how he has security on him. Sofia tells Stan she and her son want to move back with Gennadi, and they're both in Gennadi's apartment on the night Elizabeth sneaks in through the fire escape. She kills both Gennadi and Sofia, though she can't bring herself to kill Sofia's son.

Elizabeth tells Philip about a plan she has to get information about Nesterenko, whom Claudia suspects might be a player. Her plan is to have Kimmy kidnapped when she's in Greece to force her father to spill the beans about what's actually happening in the summit with Nesterenko. Philip protests, but goes along with the plan at first to the point he tells Kimmy he's going to be in Rome when she's in Greece, and he also sleeps with her for the first time. However, Philip changes his mind, and later, he calls Kimmy to tell her he won't be seeing her anymore, as well as warning her not to leave Greece under any circumstance, though he doesn't tell her why.

Elsewhere, Tatiana runs into Oleg outside where he's studying, and while she can't get him to admit what he's really doing there, she tells the new chief Rezidentura Oleg is there unofficially and therefore can't be trusted.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Call-Back: Tatiana accuses Oleg of leaking her operation to the FBI, which Oleg denies.
  • Dramatic Irony: Stan tells Philip about Gennadi and Sofia being killed, not knowing Elizabeth was the one responsible.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Though Elizabeth kills Gennadi and Sofia with no thought, she can't bring herself to kill Sofia's young son.
    • Though Philip finally has sex with Kimmy, he eventually refuses to be part of Elizabeth's plan for Kimmy, and warns Kimmy not to accept any invitations to leave Greece while she's there.
  • Historical Domain Character: Claudia tells Elizabeth an aide to Senator Sam Nunn is involved in the summit, which becomes important later.
  • Playing Drunk: Discussed - Claudia tells Paige to drink olive oil before she goes out to a bar so she'll be able to drink a lot and pretend to be drunk without actually being drunk.
  • Product Placement: Paige is drinking Molson Canadian beer when she's at the bar, and Philip buys the same beer for Stan later.
  • Shout-Out: Sofia's son is watching Babes in Toyland (1934) while Elizabeth is killing his mother.
    • At one point, a Coors commercial from the time is playing on TV, featuring Mark Harmon.
  • Slashed Throat: How Elizabeth kills Gennadi and Sofia.
  • Their First Time: After getting drunk (see Vodka Drunkenski below), Claudia and Elizabeth each tell Paige about the first time they each had sex.
  • Title Drop: Claudia refers to World War II as "The Great Patriotic War", and both she and Elizabeth tell Paige what the U.S. educational system teaches about the war is wrong, downplaying how much the Soviet Union suffered during the war.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Zigzagged with Paige - the way she's able to fight off the guy she's with and his friend in the bar shows her training has helped her to take care of herself, but as Philip demonstrates to her later, she's still got a long way to go.
  • Vodka Drunkenski: After Claudia, Elizabeth and Paige drink olive oil, they proceed to drink vodka for the rest of their time together.
