Puss in Black?!?!?

Directed by: Mucci Fassett

Written by: Ben Acker & Ben Blacker

When a goblin curses Puss into becoming a black cat and a bringer of bad luck to all those around him, he exiles himself from San Lorenzo and sets out to find the cure.

Tropes:

  • Blatant Lies:
    • The Guild describing the Luck Bomb where it is clear they are just making it up on the spot.
    • As well as them trying to cover up their stealing as if they were the ones robbed first.
  • Call-Back: As Puss begins his exile, he begins reciting the Opening Narration from the first episode, but stops when he realizes he doesn't believe it anymore.
  • Contrived Coincidence: The farmers that the Guild try to rob and Puss protects are the same goblins that put the curse on him. They remove it as thanks.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: The Guild of Darkness, a trio of similar black cats identified by their color coded hats.
    • Francisco the leader in red.
    • Baltasar the Only Sane Man in blue.
    • Phillip the one that likes echoing others in yellow.
  • Cursed with Awesome:
    • An eavesdropping thief is cursed to have donkey ears, but he is not bothered by the appearance and appreciates that they hear much better than human ears.
    • Also the black cats, after they have learned how to control their bad luck.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Baltasar, as part of being the Only Sane Man in a group of silly people.
Francisco: Comrades, it hath been an honor to liveth, and now dieth with you.
Baltasar: You know what, I'm okay with dying if it means I don't have to listen to you talk like that anymore.
  • Disaster Dominoes: A particularly bad string of them is brought on by Puss' bad luck.
  • Easy Come, Easy Go: After Puss is transformed back and tries to show the citizens the Luck Bomb he preformed. Once he realizes he needs to be a black cat to do it he just brushes it off with an "Oh well".
  • Fantastic Racism: Averted. Despite all the bad things said about Goblins in episode 12, Puss states he has never heard of a Goblin stealing.
  • Flowery Elizabethan English: Francisco talks to such a degree that Puss can't even understand what he's saying until he starts to get to know him better.
  • Ground Punch: Puss does this to break up a fight between the Guild and the goblins, creating a large explosion of luck energy in the process. Francisco dubs this to be the Luck Bomb.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Because of their bad luck, The Guild of Darkness are naturally shunned or feared by everyone and thus try to trick Puss into staying with them forever because they are desperate to have friends.
  • Mrs. Hypothetical: When Puss gets a hold of the Guild's mystical tome, he realizes it is simply Francisco's diary, and reading it reveals their plan to trick Puss into staying with them forever as well as "Mr & Mrs Francisco Puss in Boots" over and over again.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Once they are defeated, a dejected Francisco starts talking normally.
  • The Jinx: All black cats are this.
  • Rule of Three: Puss gets randomly "booped" on the nose by people three times. The third time it is as a magic gesture to remove his curse.
  • Sadistic Choice: When Puss realize the Guild is the Bad Guys and stealing from farmers he vows to protect them from the Guild. The Guild states if he does this he will never learn to control his bad luck and never go back to San Lorenzo. Puss chooses to still defend the farmers.
  • Ship Tease:
Puss: I do not want any of you to get hurt because of me, and that is why I must leave you.
Dulcinea: You can't leave me! ...Us. I'm a part of us, obviously.
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: This seems to be what the Luck Blast is. It's mentioned that it is directly weaponizing the bad luck that a black cat would otherwise passively generate around them.
