Recap / The Addams Family S 1 E 3 Festers Punctured Romance

Go To

Uncle Fester has been secretly scanning the lonely hearts columns, looking for a bride. He finally fesses up and writes a letter, with Gomez happy to snap a picture to go with it. When door-to-door cosmetics saleswoman Miss Carver appears at the door, Uncle Fester mistakes her for his correspondent.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Ash Face: Morticia looks on as Gomez takes Uncle Fester's picture. A moment later, all three of their faces are blackened with flash powder.
  • Baldness Angst: Inverted. Uncle Fester once had hair but thinks he looks better without it.
Uncle Fester: I was thin then, and I had hair. I do look better now, don't I?
    Morticia: Much.
  • Cake Toppers: When Gomez and Morticia learn that Uncle Fester is seeking a bride, they give him the figures of themselves from their own wedding cake.
  • Cuckoo Clock Gag: The family's cuckoo clock has a lion in it.
  • Mistaken for Flirting: Wednesday, out in the front yard, tells Miss Carver about Uncle Fester. Morticia, thinking Miss Carver's cosmetics case is a suitcase, assumes she's answering Uncle Fester's letter and that her sales pitch is an attempt to seduce him into marriage.
Miss Carver: And don't tell me, that gentleman behind you is Uncle Fester. I know from the description I've received.
Uncle Fester: You can't force me!
Miss Carver: Oh, I never use force, just gentle persuasion. And sometimes in difficult cases, I merely give a free sample and leave the prospect to think it over.
Morticia: Miss Carver! We don't countenance such behavior in this house.
Miss Carver: Well, then I'll be happy to accept cash.
  • Pets as a Present: Uncle Fester gives Wednesday a black widow spider village.
    Morticia: Isn't that lovely?
Gomez: Just like a society of small humans.
Wednesday: Yeah, they do nothing but fight.
    Morticia: That's life.
  • Piggy Bank: Pugsley's piggy bank is a real pig, with the words "FUN MONEY" visible on one side.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title references Tillie's Punctured Romance.
  • Shrunken Head: Thing has gift-boxed a shrunken head as a present for Uncle Fester.
  • Traveling Saleswoman: Miss Carver sells cosmetics door-to-door.
