Recap / The Addams Family S 1 E 4 Gomez The Politician

Go To

As the election season arrives, the Addamses take an interest in the proceedings, with Gomez even picking a candidate to back. However, when he hears their old friend Sam L. Hilliard is running for office, he switches candidates and takes to the streets to campaign for Hilliard...much to the man's dismay.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Description Cut: Morticia and Gomez both express confidence that Mr. Hilliard will be glad to have their support in the upcoming election...whereupon the scene cuts to Hilliard, very unhappily receiving the news.
  • Faint in Shock: Mr. Hilliard collapses after hearing that he's lost the election.
  • Gallows Humor: Mr. Bass asks Gomez if the entire property belongs to him, and Gomez says the family (property) goes back to the cemetery. Mr. Bass quips that everyone does at some point or other.
  • Historical Domain Character: Gomez starts hanging up old campaign posters in the playroom to decorate. Thomas Dewey and Stephen Douglas appear among the candidates the family backed in the past.
  • Politicians Kiss Babies: One of Hilliard's campaigners mentions baby-kissing as a thing politicians do to charm the public as he's trying to talk Hilliard into doing another such activity, welcoming the Addamses.
  • Mysterious Middle Initial: Sam Hilliard's middle name is given only as "L" on the poster.
  • Nap-Inducing Speak: Gomez practices a campaigning speech and Kitty Cat goes to sleep in the middle of it. Morticia dismisses it as unimportant because he doesn't vote anyway.
  • Not So Stoic: Morticia's voice gets a little quavery when she reads Hilliard's campaign promise to drain the swamps. Gomez quickly reassures her that they're safe, given that politicians never keep promises.
  • Recurring Character: Sam Hilliard returns after appearing on the school board in earlier episodes.
  • Red Baron: One of the Addams relatives (who was also an active political supporter) was nicknamed "Kiss-of-Death Blight". Gomez remarks that he can't figure out the reason for it.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When Gomez sees the initial "L" on Sam Hilliard's campaign poster, he comments that he hopes it stands for "Lucifer." The fellow's campaigner goes with it in an effort to get Gomez' support.
  • Would Rather Suffer: One of Hilliard's campaigners tries to convince him to welcome the Addamses to the campaign personally, saying that the family has enough money to make a large contribution and that the public likes contact with the candidate. Hilliard retorts that he'd prefer to lose, and the guy shoots back that he might wind up without more funds. Hilliard still says it's not worth it. Lurch ends up dragging Hilliard over for a "strategy meeting" anyway.
