Recap / Teen Titans S5 E10 "Go"

Go To

"When there's trouble...you know who to call."
Robin

Go! is the Teen Titans' origin story. Alien princess Starfire escapes from her captors and crashlands on Earth, causing havoc in Jump City and inadvertently bringing her captors to Earth. Four other teens with unusual powers are drawn together by the situation and eventually all five team up to save Jump City, becoming the Teen Titans.

Tropes:

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Double-subverted; at first Starfire doesn't know what the meaning of nice is, and she's astounded that four complete strangers would put their lives and planet on the line for her. As they start to fight together, however, she warms up to them and mentions they are surprisingly "kind".
  • Big "SHUT UP!": When all the Titans are fighting with each other, Raven gets a migraine and then yells a big "QUIET!" before saying a small and meek "Hi..."
  • Character Development: The entire episode has Starfire alone go through much character development. She starts out being hostile towards the other Titans upon first meeting and seeing "nice" as a show of weakness. But after much bonding with her future friends, she comes out of the experience accepting that kindness isn't a weakness, complete with a wardrobe change into her iconic outfit.
  • Call-Forward: Besides Starfire, the Gordanian ship also contains two other captives - an alien monster identical to the one from "Stranded" and a Locrix from "Troq".
  • Clothing Damage: Cyborg's street clothes gets destroyed during the fight against the Gordanians.
  • Continuity Nod: When Beast Boy first appears, he is wearing his Doom Patrol mask. He quickly discards it due to it not looking cool.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Starfire over the course of the episode, especially towards Robin.
  • Dramatic Irony: Most of the characterization of the Titans in this episode, compared to the personalities that the audience is familiar with after they become True Companions.
  • Episode Finishes the Title: Teen Titans Go!
  • Fire-Forged Friends: All the Titans as a result of fighting the Gordanians.
  • Flashback to Catchphrase: Beast Boy discovering the word "Dude!" Also,
Cyborg: I'm only gonna say this once... Booyah.
  • Forceful Kiss: Starfire gives one to Robin, but it's not played for romance because this is how she learns English (she was speaking entirely in Tamaranean until then), and the next words out of her mouth are a threat to destroy the others if they don't leave her alone.
  • Good Costume Switch: Starfire switches from her black and grey prison garb, which is identical to Blackfire's, to her modern-day outfit. This also signifies her Defrosting Ice Queen status.
  • Huge Holographic Head: Twice in the episode, when the Gordanian leader Trogar projects a skyscraper-sized hologram of himself to command the citizens of Jump City to stay out of their invasion's way.
  • I Am a Monster: When Cyborg first appears, he is wearing clothing that covers his whole body, including gloves and a hood covering his head. When Beast Boy persists in trying to befriend him, Cyborg takes off the hood to show his half-robot head.
Cyborg: There! Take a good long look! I had an accident, and became a monster, all right? A cyborg!
  • I Work Alone: Robin says this at the beginning when a mugger is about to ask where his partner is. (It doesn't exactly help Robin's case that a flock of bats flies out of the shadows ahead of him.) Looks like Robin and Batman are not so different after all.
  • Jabba Table Manners: Starfire has this, as shown when she swallows handfuls of candy without even taking the wrappers off the chocolate. Beast Boy lampshades this.
  • Language Barrier: Starfire during her violent rampage in the beginning. She could only scream out in her native Tameranian tongue, making it hard for the other Titans to try and calm her down or even communicate. This is fixed once she absorbs her first Earth language from Robin via Forceful Kiss.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Robin vs. Starfire at first since she's causing a lot of property damage in trying to remove her handcuffs, and since she isn't speaking English she appears to be a typical villain. Cyborg and Beast Boy join in to help Robin, and Raven stops the fight entirely by suggesting that the teens perform Politeness Judo.
  • Made a Slave: Starfire says that at the Citadel she will become one, if the Gordanians succeed in taking her there.
  • Made of Iron: When Robin smacked away Starfire with his bo staff, she acted unhurt. Moments later, the staff shattered to bits.
  • Meaningful Echo: For the first half of the episode, Starfire's sees the word "nice" as something bad because it represents her people's word for "weak", though the others have to insist "nice" is exactly what it sounds like. In the end, Starfire pulls a Good Costume Switch in hopes it looks "nice", showing she's accepted that being kindly is not necessarily the same as being weak.
  • Mook Horror Show: The Gordanians get this in the Cold Open, as a door is smashed down, and we see a black room with glowing green eyes.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Trogaar’s voice sounds very similar to Harvey Fierstein’s voice.
  • Origins Episode: The episode serves to explain how the Teen Titans met each other and first became a team.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Beast Boy is still wearing his Doom Patrol mask. When Cyborg and Raven tell him that his mask looks ridiculous, he tells them he needs it to hide his secret identity. Raven says it's pointless for him to hide his identity as he is green and therefore easily recognizable. Hearing that, Beast realizes she is right and gets rid of his mask.
Beast Boy: But...what about my secret identity?
Raven: (vocally confused) What secret identity? You're green.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: In the beginning, Starfire destroyed a good portion of the city, and that was when she was still shackled.
  • Politeness Judo: Raven suggests doing this when it seems Starfire is attacking all of them, when really she's trying to get her handcuffs off. Robin listens, and manages to undo the shackles. This stops Starfire's offensive, though she knocks him down after kissing him and flies off to find food.
  • Prequel: To the rest of the show, establishing how the Titans first met each other and formed a team.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Cyborg eventually describes the group as this when Raven describes herself as someone who doesn't fit in. Cyborg counters by explaining that Beast Boy's green, Cyborg's half-human, and Starfire's an alien. Raven will fit in just fine.
Cyborg: Mind telling me why you're always by yourself?
Raven: You hear the kid. I don't exactly fit in.
Cyborg: He's green, half of me is metal, and she's from space. You fit in just fine.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Everyone gives one to each other for the mess they were in until Raven breaks it up.
Starfire: (to Robin) All the fault is yours! I commanded you to leave me alone, but you insisted upon the being nice!
Robin: My fault? You blast me, YOU KISS ME, but you NEVER stop to mention that they have a gigantic particle weapon?!
(Robin and Starfire continues to argue in the background as Beast Boy and Cyborg gets in an argument themselves)
Beast Boy: We are doomed. I can't believe I let you talk me into this.
Cyborg: Say what?! I was ready to walk before you...
(Raven gets a migraine from the arguing)
    Raven: QUIET!!
    Raven: (sheepishly) Hi...
  • Resolved Noodle Incident: The season 1 episode "Sisters" has Starfire mistaking a fireworks display for a "Gordanian invasion". Audiences finally finds out what's the deal with Gordanians and why are they Tamaranian enemies in this prequel.
  • Retcon: Despite Beast Boy being surprised that Raven finds his jokes entertaining in Nevermore, it's revealed that Beast Boy's attempt at trying to entertain Raven so much is the result of her outright telling him that she finds him funny.
  • Robotic Reveal: Cyborg, after his hood and body-convealing clothing gets burned off by laser fire.
  • Shrinking Violet: Raven seems to start out as one.
  • Stunned Silence: Everyone looks at Raven in silence after she yells a Big "QUIET" when they started arguing with each other.
  • Tsundere: Robin accuses Starfire as acting this way when she says that if they hadn't tried to defend her, Earth wouldn't be in trouble after she kissed him and then ran away.
Robin: My fault? You blast me, YOU KISS ME, but you NEVER stop to mention that they have a gigantic particle weapon?!
  • What Is This Feeling?: Starfire doesn't understand what "nice" is, since in Tamaranean the closest term is a synonym for "weak". She eventually gets better, thanks to Robin.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When Starfire's reaction to the word "nice" is to compare it to the word "weak", Cyborg calls her out on her bad attitude and makes it clear that if she wants any form of hospitality, she needs to clean up her act (followed by telling them what she knows about the Gordanians.)
  • Whole Episode Flashback: This episode shows the Titans meeting first time and becoming a team.
  • With My Hands Tied: Starfire kicks ass even with her hands shackled together and unable to use starbolts.
