Recap / Strong Bad Email E 52 Island

Go To

Airdate: Monday, November 25, 2002

Sender: Yami Yugi, England

Strong Bad: Strong Bad Emails are a part of this balanced breakfast.

"Yami Yugi" writes in to ask Strong Bad what he would do if he was stuck on a desert island with Homestar Runner.

Strong Bad: Well... (hesitantly) Yami Yugi... I suspect it would be like most cartoons. You know, we'd start to go nuts after a while and I would look at Homestar and he would look like a big steak. And then Homestar would look at me and I'd look like, you know, some kinda brownie sundae. So we'd chase each other around the island, trying to eat each other. And at some point my foot would look like a sandwich and I'd put salt on it and try to eat it and it's like, "Oh! It's my foot!!" But that's a best case scenario.

Strong Bad imagines that being stuck on a deserted island with Homestar would be much more annoying, and involve Homestar bugging him with stupid questions (like "Are we rescued yet?" and "Is there ice cream yet?") and summoning things by saying "Toons", "Games", and "Email". A message in a bottle helps to alleviate the tedium, but rather than being anything useful it turns out to be a flyer from 1985.

Strong Bad: What?! Super Bowl Nineteen... Miami Dolphins vs. San Francisco 49ers... Great.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: After his first two questions to Strong Bad, Homestar addresses Strong Bad as "Stinkoman" as he prepares to ask a third one.
Strong Bad: Um, did you just call me Stinkoman?
    Homestar: Yes, sir, I did!
Strong Bad: Jeez. You don't happen to have a gun on your side of the island, do ya?
  • Autocannibalism: Strong Bad mentions the possibility of getting hungry enough to try and eat his own foot if he were stranded on a deserted island.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Homestar amuses himself (and annoys Strong Bad) by saying "Toons!", "Games!" and "E-mail!" to summon stuff, in reference to Main Page 3, which features Homestar on a tropical island.
    • One of the things Strong Bad can turn into during the Easter egg at the end is a plate of "pinner" from "Meet Marshie".
  • "Far Side" Island: Strong Bad and Homestar end up on a small sandy island that's just big enough for the two of them and a single palm tree.
  • Funny Background Event: When Strong Bad says "I'm sure it would be much more annoying and painful with Homestar involved", he types "Dumpface" instead of "Homestar".
  • I Will Show You X!:
    Homestar: Hey Strong Bad!
    Strong Bad: What?
    Homestar: Are we rescued yet?
Strong Bad: You're gonna need to be rescued in a second if you don't quit asking me that.
  • Lame Comeback:
    Homestar: Hey Strong Bad?
    Strong Bad: What?!
Homestar: Is there ice cream yet?
Strong Bad: You're gonna need to get ice cream in a second if you don't quit asking me that. You know... 'cause I'm gonna hit you...and you'll need the ice cream to... stop the swelling."
  • Malicious Misnaming: Homestar calls Strong Bad "Stinkoman" for no reason. It would later become the name of Strong Bad's anime equivalent.
  • Meat-O-Vision: Discussed, with Strong Bad remarking that in "most cartoons" he and Homestar would start hallucinating each other as food. It also appears in an Easter egg at the end of the cartoon, with Homestar and Strong Bad turning into various food items and other things.
  • Message in a Bottle: Strong Bad finds one that turns out to be a flyer for Super Bowl XIX.
  • Shout-Out: The sender's name is likely a deliberate reference to the protagonist of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series.
  • Worst. Whatever. Ever!: After the Message in a Bottle turns out to be an outdated Super Bowl flyer, Strong Bad gripes "This is the worst deserted island ever!"

Hometar: We're saved!
Strong Bad: This is the worst deserted island ever!
