Recap / Star vs. the Forces of Evil S4 E33 "The Right Way"

Go To

Star, Ponyhead, Sea Horse, Kelly, Rich Pigeon, Jorby, Talon and Quirky Guy all arrive to bail out Eclipsa.

Tropes:

  • Behemoth Battle: Star counters the Solarian armor by forming giant armor of her own made of rainbows, but ultimately loses.
  • Behind the Black: The armor is taller than every building in town, but half of Star's party still fail to see it until it comes from onscreen to attack them.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Star gives one when Marco reveals that the Solarian Soldier they spent the whole episode fighting and barely defeated was not Mina.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: Eclipsa describes Solaria and the Solarian warriors to Janna, only revealing that Solaria was her mother near the end of the conversation.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: Subverted. At first, Marco arriving to warn Star and the others about Mina coming to attack was both old news and no longer a problem. Then Marco drops a Wham Line.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Mina's army of hundreds of Solarians advancing as Eclipsa Faints in Shock.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: If Eclipsa, one of the most powerful queens of Mewni, was having a difficult time fighting the Solarian Soldier, did you really think any of Star's non-magic using friends had much of a chance against it?
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Eclipsa uses the Spell With No Name to destroy the armored Solarian—it also destroys a large part of the countryside and keeps going, showing why she was hesitant to use it.
  • Find the Cure!: The injuries from the Solarian blades aren't just debilitating, they continue to spread over the victim's body. Janna and Eclipsa see the results listed in a book, their reaction implying it's terminal if they don't find some way to stop it.
  • Foreshadowing: While at first it looks like she was just being stoic, the fact that the Solarian Soldier didn't speak, react to what Star said to it, and didn't go into Mina's usual psychotic rambling is a hint that it's not her.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Eclipsa is forced to use the Spell With No Name to defeat the Solarian warrior, which then keeps on going, destroying everything in its path. She mentions afterward that it was one of her mother's spells, which she hoped to never use. Using it also seems to tire her out greatly.
  • Kaiju: The spell Star uses to summon her Hard Light armor is "Rainbow Kaiju Battle Armour".
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: Kelly suggest the group split up to take down the Solarian armor. Despite Star calling it a bad idea, Kelly, Jorby, Talon, and Quirky Guy run off together, and quickly end up beaten.
  • Magical Incantation: Eclipsa reveals the magical incantation for the Spell with No Name while fighting the Solarian armor.
I call the spell which has no name.
My mother's gift with which she reigned.
Eclipse my heart with rightful power.
Stand before the queen and cower!
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: After much hardship, the Solarian Soldier is defeated when Eclipsa uses the Spell With No Name. Unfortunately, it's then that Marco reveals that not only was the soldier not Mina, but Mina has a whole army.
  • Not So Stoic: Seahorse's face looks terrified once Ponyhead is slashed by the Solarian blade.
  • Rousing Speech: As Star struggles to hold off the Solarian Soldier with rainbow fists, Pony Head calls to her and says that while the soldier is filled with hate, Star is filled with love and surrounded by it.
Pony Head: Baby girl! Don't let the monster win. She is filled with hate. But you, you need to look around you. You are surrounded by love. You've got a big heart, girl. You got the biggest heart Mewni has ever seen. SHOW HER YOUR HEART!
  • Self-Serving Memory: Star claims to have held her own against Mina when they fought in "Monster Bash". In reality, Mina effortlessly endured all of Star's attacks before running off because the guards (and Rhombulus) intervened.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: Star summons a giant rainbow whale to knock over the Solarian when she first arrives with a quip about this. The spell corrects her about not being a fish.
Star: You think you're a big boy, huh? Well there's always a bigger fish.
    Spell: I'm a whale!
  • Takes One to Kill One: Mewni is attacked by someone empowered by Solaria's magic. The only thing that worked against it? More of Solaria's magic.
  • Those Were Only Their Scouts: The Solarian that devastated all of Mewni's defenses and was only defeated by Eclipsa's Dangerous Forbidden Technique wasn't Mina, it was just one of the hundreds of armored Solarians at Mina's side.
  • Tomato Surprise: In the previous episode, Mina was shown getting in her giant armor, but hadn't put the helmet on yet. Then a giant suit of armor attacks the Monster Temple, but the pilot never shows their face or says anything. Despite the characters also assuming it's Mina, once they're defeated it turns out Mina was in a different suit with a different helmet.
  • Wham Line: When Star tells Marco that Mina has seemingly been defeated by Eclipsa, Marco drops a bombshell:
Marco: [looking up to the Solarian Soldier] Uh, that's not Mina.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Eclipsa's reaction to hearing that the Solarian Soldier that took a lot out of her to defeat was not Mina is a humorous "I'm sorry, pardon me?!" That carries over when she sees that Mina has a whole army, prompting her to pass out in disbelief and fatigue.
