YMMV / SpongeBob SquarePants (S5E7) "To Love a Patty"/"Breath of Fresh Squidward"

Go To

To Love a Patty:

  • Bile Fascination: To some, the premise of SpongeBob falling in love with a Krabby Patty, even if it means committing heinous acts of violence is so outlandish, that many fans seek the episode out to see if it's as bad as it sounds. Even PieGuyRulz recommends the episode to people getting into Season 5 for the first time so they can see how bad it is.
  • Nausea Fuel: The close up of the rotten patty. If that's not enough, there's SpongeBob eating it in the end.
  • Never Live It Down: Fans won't forget SpongeBob destroying all of the clams to protect the krabby patty, especially considering he once took care of one in "Rock-a-Bye Bivalve".
  • Nightmare Fuel: When SpongeBob rips apart the last clam so it's jaws are in half is pretty graphic for a show like SpongeBob. Just when you thought Squidward's toenail ripping off wasn't horrific enough.
  • Padding: The scene with Sandy and Patrick learning that their best friend is dating a Krabby Patty. You'd think that Sandy (the most rational one of the main cast) would think that something is seriously wrong with SpongeBob and try to intervene, but she doesn't do anything, while Patrick gets jealous and declares that he's going to find his own Krabby Patty girlfriend, but despite the set-up, this never returns as a Brick Joke, making their scene entirely redundant.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: That one scene of SpongeBob tearing apart the clams is the reason why this is considered to be one of the worst episodes to many.
  • Refrain from Assuming: SpongeBob's love song to Patty is not called "Oh, Baby", it's "Can't Keep My Eyes Off of You". That phrase is not sung once throughout.

Breath of Fresh Squidward:

  • Catharsis Factor: For any detractors of SpongeBob's Flanderization into an Idiot Houdini, this whole episode is devoted to him getting A Taste Of His Own Medicine, with the reformed Squidward infuriating him with his own clingy behaviour and upstaging his social and business life.
  • Funny Moments: SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward arguing after the former two were electrocuted and were given a Squidward-like personality.
  • Never Live It Down: SpongeBob lashing out at Squidward at Patrick's party. While SpongeBob does apologize for it afterward, it isn't helped by the fact that nobody calls him out for it, let alone getting annoyed at Squidward’s behaviour when the sponge has annoyed him many times in the past, no less this same episode having SpongeBob and Patrick break into Squidward's house to watch him sleep, which they've also done several times.
  • The Woobie: Nice Squidward. He honestly just wanted to be SpongeBob's friend and looked genuinely hurt after SpongeBob threw him out of the party out of sheer jealousy.
