Recap / Skull Island (2023) S1 E7 "You're Not a King, You're Just a Stupid Animal"

Go To

Tropes:

  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Very much downplayed with the Island Girl. When Kong finds her in the aftermath of the Kraken's massacre among the bodies, her complexion is sickly and she's covered in dark lesions from the Kraken's tentacles.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: The Skullcrawler, upon cornering the Island Girl at a rock face, takes its sweet-ass time stalking ever so slowly towards her for the kill, which buys enough time for Kong to turn up and get the drop on it.
  • Call-Forward:
    • The Island Girl muses on the idea that people from the outside world could create machine versions of existing individuals including Kong, and that the machine Kong could perform his duties for him. Though the Island Girl's vision of it is a lot more idyllic and less sinister, this otherwise sounds a lot like what Apex Cybernetics tried to do in Godzilla vs. Kong with Godzilla: making Mechagodzilla to replace him as the reigning global Alpha Titan. This is also a Mythology Gag to Mechani-Kong, who was the original inspiration for Mechagodzilla.
    • The Hawk Monster, who is already a Suspiciously Similar Substitute of Rodan, references Rodan's role in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) while fighting one of the Killer Chameleons. Harassed by the chameleon, the Hawk directs a Death Glare at it and then performs an aileron roll which takes it out of the fight, almost exactly like what Rodan did against the Gold Squadron jets.
  • Held Gaze: Kong shares a tentative gaze with the Island Girl when she's dying and she reconciles with him.
  • Howl of Sorrow: After burying the Island Girl, Kong bellows at the top of his lungs, before crumpling to his knees.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: It's revealed that Kong had once befriended a Spanish-speaking island girl and formed a bond with her, until the two eventually had a falling out after a battle with monsters nearly got him, her, and his hawk killed. Later, the Kraken attacked the girl's village, fatally wounding her in the process, and when Kong brought her to his home, she later died in his arms, calling him her king, before burying her outside. The necklace from her is a Tragic Keepsake for Kong.
  • The Power of Blood: Apparently, the Kraken was woken from its deep hibernation on the floor of a Skull Island bay when a drop of Kong's blood touched it.
  • Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: The Spanish-speaking girl who befriended Kong had green eyes and red hair.
  • Say My Name: The Island Girl crying out for help when she's sent flying off a cliff during hers and Kong's battle against the Killer Chameleons:
    "KONG!"
  • Stargazing Scene: After the Skullcrawler is dealt with, Kong and the Island Girl gaze up at the stars from a mountaintop side-by-side, and the Island Girl muses aloud on the events of Kong: Skull Island and how the outside world beyond Skull Island must be changing.
  • Take My Hand!: When the Island Girl is in freefall and Kong is leaping upward to catch her, they reach out their hands to the other and the Island Girl's hand misses Kong's fingertip by less than a meter.
  • Title Drop: The island girl yells the episode's title when she gets mad at Kong.
  • Tongue Trauma: The Island Girl stakes one of the Killer Chameleons' distended tongues to the ground using her spear.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: The main plot of the series is put on hold, while the episode instead focuses on an event from Kong's past.
